For routine exterior cleaning, wipe your DualSense with a soft, dry cloth. Sony warns against solvents, alcohol and chemically treated wipes or cloths, which can deteriorate or discolor the controller’s exterior.
How to clean the outside of a DualSense controller
- Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the controller’s exterior. A clean microfiber cloth is one suitable example, but Sony recommends a soft, dry cloth and does not require a particular material or brand.
- Stop there for routine cleaning. Sony’s manuals do not give a separate procedure for cleaning seams, button gaps or stubborn residue.
Sony’s North American manual gives the instruction: “Wipe with a soft, dry cloth.” Sony’s controller manuals provide the product-care guidance; use the manual supplied for your controller and region.

What not to use on the controller’s finish
- Solvents and chemical cleaners: Sony’s North American manual warns against solvents and other chemicals.
- Thinner, benzine or alcohol: Sony’s current English India manual explicitly says not to use these substances.
- Wipes or chemically treated cloths: Sony says to avoid wipes, chemical cloths and other products containing thinner, benzine or alcohol. Its North American manual also cautions against chemically treated cleaning cloths.
- Volatile substances such as insecticide: Sony cautions against applying them to the product.
- Prolonged contact with rubber or vinyl: Sony warns against leaving these materials in contact with the controller for an extended period.
Sony says these care precautions help prevent the exterior from deteriorating or discoloring. Do not spray cleaner or other liquid onto the controller; the manuals’ supported routine method is a dry cloth.

When dry wiping is not enough
Sony’s manuals do not provide a method for removing grime from gaps, treating stubborn residue or disinfecting the controller. They also do not provide an authorized disassembly-based cleaning procedure. Do not improvise with liquids, solvents or disassembly: Sony says not to disassemble or modify the product unless the manual authorizes it. If the supplied manual does not cover the issue, consult Sony’s manuals and support information for your region and controller revision.

The North American manual recommends a soft, dry cloth and uses the broader warning against solvents or other chemicals. The current English India manual names thinner, benzine and alcohol and warns against wipes or chemical cloths containing them. Both are official Sony guidance; wording may vary by region and controller revision, so follow the manual supplied for your DualSense.
