How to Claim Input Tax Credit Under GST and Avoid Common Filing Errors

A practical guide to claiming GST input tax credit: gather documents, reconcile GSTR-2B, check eligibility, report in GSTR-3B, and avoid common errors.

To claim input tax credit (ITC) under Indian GST, verify your tax documents and purchase records, reconcile them with the GST Portal’s GSTR-2B, test each credit against the legal eligibility rules, and report eligible credit and required reversals in GSTR-3B. GSTR-2B is a read-only statement—not a ruling that every listed amount is claimable or that every unlisted amount is ineligible.

What you need before claiming ITC

Keep purchase records and the tax documents that support each transaction. Depending on the transaction, the prescribed documents can include a supplier tax invoice, debit note, bill of entry, or Input Service Distributor (ISD) document. The document must meet the applicable requirements; a record in GSTR-2B does not replace that check. See the CBIC input tax credit rules.

ITC is generally relevant to a registered taxpayer, but eligibility depends on the facts and the governing GST provisions. This workflow is general guidance, not a decision on whether a particular invoice qualifies.

How to claim ITC: a practical sequence

  1. Collect and organize your records

Maintain invoices and other applicable tax documents alongside purchase-ledger entries, payment and tax records, and any credit notes or amendments. Organize them by financial year and return period so you can trace each claim to its source.

  2. Download the period’s GSTR-2B

Use the GST Portal’s GSTR-2B for the relevant period. It is a static, auto-drafted ITC statement reflecting information filed by suppliers and ISDs and specified import information. The recipient does not file GSTR-2B and cannot edit it or add missing documents. The Portal explains its use in its GSTR-2B FAQ.

  3. Reconcile GSTR-2B against your books

Compare entries line by line, including supplier GSTIN, document number and date, taxable value, tax amounts, credit notes, amendments, and the corresponding purchase records. Check for duplicate entries or claims, and keep a reconciliation trail showing how differences were resolved. The GST Portal advises taxpayers to reconcile GSTR-2B with their books and records and avoid claiming the same credit twice (GST Portal GSTR-2B FAQ).

  4. Test each amount for legal eligibility

For every reconciled item, verify that the document and transaction satisfy the applicable conditions. Consider the recipient’s status, the actual use of the supply, documentary requirements, tax-payment conditions, and restrictions such as blocked credit. A GSTR-2B match alone does not establish eligibility. Likewise, the Portal’s “not available” indicators do not represent every possible legal restriction, so assess the law independently (GST Portal GSTR-2B FAQ; CBIC input tax credit rules).

  5. Work out reversals and any possible reclaim

Calculate reversals required by the applicable rules, and account for tax due on reverse-charge supplies. Distinguish permanent reversals from temporary reversals: CBIC’s guidance on GSTR-3B Table 4 describes cases where a temporary reversal may be reclaimed after the relevant condition is fulfilled. A potential reclaim is not automatic; confirm that the condition has actually been met before including it. See CBIC Circular 170/02/2022-GST.

  6. Report the figures in GSTR-3B

Report eligible ITC and applicable reversals in the relevant fields of GSTR-3B Table 4, following the current return instructions. Check any auto-populated amounts against your reconciliation: values may be editable, but editing a field does not make an otherwise ineligible credit valid. The GST Portal says GSTR-2B should help taxpayers take the right ITC in the respective GSTR-3B sections (GST Portal GSTR-2B FAQ; CBIC Circular 170/02/2022-GST).

Common filing errors and how to prevent them

  • Claiming everything that appears in GSTR-2B: assess each transaction’s eligibility and restrictions before reporting it.
  • Treating GSTR-2B as a complete legal checklist: review conditions and restrictions beyond the Portal’s availability indicators.
  • Skipping reconciliation or claiming an invoice twice: match document details to the books and check the invoice’s claim history.
  • Overlooking credit notes, amendments, or reversals: reconcile the net position and classify reversals before completing Table 4.
  • Forgetting reverse charge: identify reverse-charge supplies and account for the tax due as required.
  • Trying to correct a missing supplier entry by changing GSTR-2B: the statement is read-only; seek correction from the supplier and assess the claim under current law.
  • Relying on an outdated deadline: older guidance may refer to a September return deadline. The general current Section 16(4) cutoff is 30 November or the relevant annual return, whichever is earlier, subject to applicable special provisions (CBIC Circular 237/31/2024-GST).

When a GST professional can help

Consider qualified tax advice where a claim is material or disputed, the document trail is incomplete, a supplier’s reporting remains unresolved, or the treatment of a reversal or special deadline is uncertain. The applicable law and transaction facts—not the appearance of an entry in the portal alone—determine entitlement.
