To keep a Steam game offered as Free to Keep, claim it on the Steam account you want to own it before the promotion’s displayed end time. Steam describes this as a time-limited offer for a permanent game license; once it ends, the free package is removed from the store page. A Free Weekend is temporary access, not a permanent claim.
Check what “free” means on the Steam offer
Steam uses different kinds of free access. Check the offer’s wording and terms before assuming a game will stay in your library:

| Offer type | What you get | What happens after the offer |
|---|---|---|
| Free to Keep | A time-limited chance to claim a permanent license at no cost. Steamworks Documentation | The free package is removed from the store page when the promotion ends. A completed claim is for a permanent license. Steamworks Documentation |
| Free Weekend | Temporary access to the full game during the event. Steamworks Documentation | After the event, the game may remain visible in your library, but you can only uninstall it unless you purchase the full version. Steamworks Documentation |
| Free to Play | A game offered for free to play, rather than a limited-time giveaway. Steam says these games can be played without a subscription or credit card; purchases of in-game items are not required to play and progress, though individual games may have their own limits. Steam Support | It is not a temporary promotion that you must claim before an end time. Steam Support |
For a giveaway you want to keep, look specifically for a Free to Keep offer. “Free” by itself does not tell you whether access is permanent.
How to claim a Free to Keep game
- Sign into the intended Steam account. The license will be associated with the account that completes the claim.
- Confirm it is a Free to Keep offer. Check the store offer for its wording and displayed end time. Steamworks defines the promotion as time-limited and says its free package is removed from the store page when the promotion ends. Steamworks Documentation
- Complete the claim on the offer page before the deadline. Do not treat downloading or playing during a Free Weekend as a permanent claim; that access ends with the event. Steamworks Documentation
- Check the library on that same account. If you do not see the game, check whether you signed into a different account, applied a restrictive library filter, or hid the game. Steam Support lists these as possible reasons a game may not appear. Steam Support
Finding a game in the library helps confirm where to look, but does not by itself prove that a Free to Keep claim succeeded. The offer must have been completed while it was available.

Will a claimed game remain available after it is delisted?
A completed Free to Keep claim grants a permanent license under the promotion’s terms. That is not a universal guarantee that a game’s downloads, online services, or all functionality will remain available forever after it leaves sale; Steam’s documentation on these promotions does not make that broader promise. A Free Weekend, by contrast, provides temporary access that ends with the event. Steamworks Documentation Steamworks Documentation
Steam separately explains that a redeemed gift can be removed if it is refunded because of fraud or a payment dispute. That specific gift-revocation case does not establish that ordinary delisting revokes a Free to Keep license. Steam Support

One account limitation to know
Playing Free Weekends or Free to Play games does not remove Steam limited-user restrictions. Do not assume that access to a free game unlocks Steam Community features. Steam Support
