Insert an eligible disc into a compatible Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and launch the game. The feature does not copy the game from the disc, and not every title qualifies.
How to claim digital access from a supported Xbox disc
- Use an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console with a disc drive. Xbox Series S cannot read physical discs.
- Insert the supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X game disc.
- Launch the game to claim its digital entitlement. Xbox’s announcement describes this claim flow; eligibility is title-specific, so do not assume a game qualifies just because it runs from disc.
Xbox says that most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support the feature, but it has not published a percentage or title count in the announcement. Check the console’s current instructions for the particular game if you need to confirm eligibility. Xbox Wire’s August 26, 2026 announcement describes the feature as claiming a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc and launching the game.

What the digital entitlement does—and does not do
The entitlement adds digital access for a supported physical game; it is not a copy of the game files extracted from the disc or an independent archival copy. Xbox says the physical disc continues to work as before after the claim.
Digital features depend on the individual game. A title may support Xbox Play Anywhere or Xbox Cloud Gaming, but claiming an entitlement does not make every game playable on PC, handheld devices, or through cloud streaming. Consult the game’s own feature information before relying on a particular option.

Which Xbox consoles can use the disc-based claim flow?
| Console | Can read a physical game disc? | Can use this disc-based claim flow? |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox One with a disc drive | Yes | Yes, for supported discs |
| Xbox Series X with a disc drive | Yes | Yes, for supported discs |
| Xbox Series S | No; it is digital-games-only | No, because it cannot read the required disc |
Microsoft’s backward-compatibility information confirms that Series S uses digital games only. If you own a Series S, you cannot insert a disc to make this claim; you need a compatible disc-drive console for the announced flow.
What happens to access, the disc, and required accessories?
Microsoft’s Digital Goods Usage Rules say disc-to-digital licensed games can be accessed and installed on the same basis as Xbox One and Xbox Series digital games, subject to additional limitations in those rules. This is a license governed by Microsoft’s terms, not unrestricted ownership of a transferable game file. The rules also say the license does not include or alter peripherals, accessories, or other equipment a game requires.

The available policy details do not establish a categorical answer about selling or lending that disc after claiming the entitlement; check the current feature terms and full Microsoft rules for that specific situation rather than assuming the entitlement changes the disc’s status.
