Facepunch Studios, the developer and publisher, describes s&box as a game creation platform built on Valve’s Source 2 engine. Steam lists its release date as April 28, 2026. The platform is designed for both playing community-made games and making, then sharing, projects of your own.

Steam’s description highlights hundreds of community games across genres including shooters, roleplay, racing, platformers, and horror. Its feature list includes online play and Workshop support, giving players ways to find and access community content.
Create and share projects
For creators, Steam describes an editor with a standard scene system, a C# API, and hotloading. The listing also includes a level editor and in-app purchases among its features. In practical terms, s&box is not only a collection of games to play: it is also a platform with tools for building and sharing them.

Is s&box the Garry’s Mod successor?
Steam calls s&box the spiritual successor to Garry’s Mod. That is the storefront’s positioning, not a claim that s&box is a remake or direct sequel, or that it includes every mode and feature from Garry’s Mod. The clearest comparison is that both are associated with user-created experiences, while s&box is built on Source 2 and offers its own creation tools and community games.
Why is access temporarily free?
An October 3, 2026 report by iXBT says the free period celebrates the Game Jam finale and reports that participants had developed hundreds of games on the platform. Steam’s listing confirms the free-play offer, but the event explanation comes from iXBT.

How does the current offer relate to the earlier price reduction?
iXBT reports that Facepunch previously lowered s&box’s base price from $20 to $10. Steam’s captured US list price of $9.99 is consistent with that rounded $10 figure. The separate $7.99 amount is the temporary promotional price shown on Steam, not the new ongoing base price.
