To cite NASA Artemis II data, cite the specific Planetary Data System (PDS) product or document you used—not a general mission page. Choose the most granular record with a DOI, then include its PDS identifier and details such as version and observation period when needed to make the exact material reproducible. Follow your journal’s dataset-reference style and check the file or collection’s use terms separately.
How do I cite NASA Artemis II data?
- Identify the material you used. Record the product or document title, filenames, relevant time range, processing level, and version shown in PDS. Keep the downloaded file’s metadata or label with your project.
- Find its PDS record. Match the file to its product, collection, and bundle records. PDS4 LIDVIDs uniquely identify bundles, collections, observational products, and documents; the identifier includes a version. See PDS guidance on identifiers.
- Use the most specific DOI-bearing record available. PDS assigns DOIs to every bundle and some collections and documents, but individual observational products do not routinely have DOIs. If the product lacks its own DOI, cite the relevant collection or bundle and list the product’s LIDVID or product ID separately. PDS explains this approach in its citation guidance.
- Add enough context to retrieve the exact input. If the DOI record covers more material than you used, provide product identifiers and relevant details—such as version, time range, or processing level—in the reference, methods, or an appendix.
- Format the reference to your required style. Retain the credited author or team, year, dataset or document title, repository, DOI, and identifying details as your journal’s data-reference format requires.
- Check use terms separately. NASA’s general guidance says data from NASA-led missions are CC0 unless a file is marked with a restrictive notice or license. Check the individual file or collection metadata; citation and reuse terms are separate matters. NASA also recommends citing the original source and repository. See NASA’s science data guidance.
Which Artemis II record should I cite?
NASA announced a release of more than 800 gigabytes of Artemis II lunar science data in 2026. That figure describes the reported volume, not the number of files or data products. The release included the Artemis II Preliminary Lunar Science Report, the Artemis II Lunar Science Operations Report, and the Artemis II Data User Guide.

The PDS catalog lists an “Artemis 2 Mission Product Bundle,” DOI 10.17189/36fx-pd80, published in 2026 by the Artemis II Lunar Science Team. Its description covers mission documents and Orion environmental temperature and humidity data. It is not automatically the right citation for every Artemis II image or observation: locate the record for the actual material you used.

Adapt the format to your style guide and confirm that this is the record for your dataset and version. If a more specific collection or document DOI applies, use that instead. The PDS catalog record is available at PDS.
How should I cite a subset of PDS products?
A bundle DOI may identify a larger package than the subset used in a study. Cite the appropriate DOI-bearing record, then include the individual LIDVIDs or product IDs and useful context in a table or appendix if the DOI alone does not show which inputs support your results. This lets readers distinguish the exact files and versions you analyzed.

Does citing NASA data give permission to reuse it?
No. Attribution and license terms answer different questions. NASA’s general guidance describes CC0 as the default for data from NASA-led missions unless a restrictive notice or license appears on the file. Check the data file or collection metadata for the item you plan to reuse. NASA web-page images, audio, and editorial content are not necessarily covered by the same terms as scientific data; consult the separate media-use guidance for those materials.

NASA’s report page lists the Preliminary Lunar Science Report dated October 7, 2026, and the Lunar Science Operations Report and Data User Guide dated October 6, 2026. The report page also attributes this statement to Victor Glover, NASA astronaut and Artemis II pilot: “The terminator is the most striking thing that I’ve seen so far.” A quote or mission report page is not a substitute for citing the underlying data product used in an analysis.
