Set your travel line as the mobile-data line, then choose separately which line places calls and sends carrier texts. That lets you use a local or prepaid travel plan for data while keeping your home number available where your phone, carrier, and plan support it. The exact controls and call behavior depend on the phone model, operating system, carrier, and region.
If you are asking, “Which SIM should I use for data while traveling?” start with the plan that covers your destination and intended data use. If you also want to keep your regular number for calls and texts, set those defaults separately and check whether your phone can receive calls on the other line while one is busy.

Decide what each line should do before changing settings
Dual-SIM phones do not necessarily use one SIM for everything. On supported devices, mobile data, outgoing calls, and carrier SMS/MMS can have separate defaults. Choosing the travel line for data therefore does not automatically make it the line used for calls or texts.

- Outgoing calls: Which number should recipients see, and which plan covers the calls you expect to make?
- Carrier texts: Which number should send SMS or MMS? App-based messaging uses an internet connection and is not the same as carrier SMS/MMS.
- Incoming calls: Do you need calls to the home number to ring while the travel line is active or while you are already using the other line?
These are separate decisions. A travel data plan may be suitable for internet access without being the right plan for calls or texts.
Before you switch anything, write down the intended job for each line: for example, “Travel for data; Home for outgoing calls; Home for carrier texts.” That simple plan makes it easier to check the settings afterward. It also prevents a common misunderstanding: keeping the home line enabled does not necessarily mean it will be used for data, and setting a travel line for data does not necessarily make it your voice or text line.
Also distinguish carrier messages from internet messaging. SMS/MMS is tied to a cellular line and its plan. Messaging in an internet-connected app is not the same service; it may work over mobile data or Wi-Fi, but choosing a carrier text default does not change which account or number an app uses.

Check compatibility and plan terms first
Before buying or activating a travel SIM or eSIM, confirm that your particular phone and carrier support the arrangement. SIM formats, dual-SIM features, and eSIM eligibility vary by model and region. On iPhone, using two different carriers requires an unlocked phone. Google also notes that Pixel dual-SIM support depends on the device and carrier, and some newer U.S. Pixel models are eSIM-only.
Ask the travel-plan provider or carrier about the destination, supported device, coverage, data allowance, activation timing, and whether roaming is required. Do not assume every eSIM works in every country or that a plan marketed for travel includes calls or SMS. Google describes a prepaid international eSIM activated on arrival as an option for avoiding roaming charges, not a guarantee for every plan or destination. See Google Pixel Phone Help’s eSIM guidance and Apple’s Dual SIM travel guidance.
For iPhone, Apple says: “Add a local data plan when you travel to another country or region.” Treat that as an option to evaluate against the home carrier’s roaming terms, rather than as a direction to disable your home line automatically.
Make the comparison using the actual terms for your trip, not just the plan name. Check whether data is included where you are going, how much is available, when the plan can be activated, and whether it is data-only or also supports calls and SMS. If the travel plan relies on roaming on a partner network, confirm that the destination is included and whether the provider requires a particular activation sequence.
There is no general price comparison that applies to all carriers or destinations. Compare what your home carrier charges for roaming with the current price and limits of a compatible local or prepaid travel plan. The phone’s settings help select a line; they do not determine the provider’s rates or guarantee local network coverage.

Set up dual SIM on iPhone
Apple’s controls are in Settings under Cellular; the menu may be called Mobile Data in some regions. Label the lines first, then select data and voice behavior deliberately. Apple says line labels appear in Phone, Messages, and Contacts, which helps you recognize the active number.
- Label the lines. Open Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data), select a line, and give it a recognizable label such as “Home” or “Travel.” Repeat for the other line.
- Choose the data line. In Cellular/Mobile Data settings, select Cellular Data and choose the line intended to provide internet access.
- Decide whether to allow switching. Review Allow Cellular Data Switching. When enabled, iPhone may use either line for data depending on coverage and availability. If you want data to stay on the chosen travel plan, leave switching off; if you enable it, understand the roaming terms for both lines.
- Set the default voice line. In Cellular/Mobile Data settings, choose Default Voice Line and select the number you want used for calls by default.
- Check the line on each conversation. Apple notes that an SMS/MMS conversation started on one line cannot simply be switched to the other line; start a new conversation on the intended line. Check the displayed line before sending, especially when the number matters to the recipient.
- Review roaming on the selected data line. Check the roaming setting for that line and the plan’s terms. Apple warns that roaming charges may apply outside the carrier’s covered country or region.
Data switching is optional, not the same as choosing a default data line. With it enabled, the phone may draw on either line depending on coverage and availability. This can affect which plan supplies the data connection, so check the roaming terms for both lines before enabling it. If you need to keep data on the travel plan, leave switching off and verify that the travel line remains selected.
The voice default is a default for placing calls, not a promise that incoming calls to both numbers will always ring. Likewise, selecting a line for data does not select a carrier-text number. Check the number shown before an important call or message, especially when the recipient must see your home number.
For full details on iPhone line selection, calls, SMS/MMS, data switching, and roaming, see Apple Support: Use Dual SIM on iPhone.
Set up dual SIM on Google Pixel
On Pixel, the SIM defaults for calls, texts, and mobile data are chosen independently in one settings area. Google says only one SIM can be the default for data. Some settings require Android 11 or later, and available choices depend on the Pixel model and carrier.
- Open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs.
- Choose the SIM to use for Mobile data. Only one SIM can be the default data SIM.
- Choose the default for Calls. Depending on the phone and configuration, you can select a line or choose Ask every time.
- Choose the default for Texts.
- Confirm the selected SIM before making an important call or sending a carrier text. The defaults do not change what an existing app-based conversation means, and internet messaging is not carrier SMS/MMS.
Google’s complete setup and device caveats are in Pixel Phone Help: How to use dual SIMs on your Google Pixel phone.
Pixel’s separate defaults make it possible to choose one line for data and another for calls or texts, but the available choices can vary. If the SIM you expect is not listed, check whether the phone, carrier, SIM format, and plan support the combination you want. Some dual-SIM settings require Android 11 or later; the exact menus and capabilities are not identical across all Pixel models.

Choose a setup that matches your travel priorities
| Priority | Practical configuration | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Use a separate travel plan for internet access | Set the travel line as mobile data; choose the call and text defaults independently. | Travel-plan destination coverage, activation timing, data allowance, and roaming terms. |
| Keep using the home number for outgoing calls | Set the home line as the default voice line on iPhone or the calls default on Pixel. | Whether the home plan charges for calls abroad and whether the line is registered and usable at the destination. |
| Choose a number for carrier texts | Set Pixel’s text default, or select the intended line when starting an iPhone SMS/MMS conversation. | Whether the plan supports SMS/MMS and what sending or receiving texts costs. |
| Keep the home number reachable during travel | Keep the home line enabled if you need it, while selecting the data line separately. | Whether the phone can receive a call on the other SIM while one line is occupied; see the model-specific behavior below. |
There is no universal best arrangement: the right one depends on plan charges, compatibility, coverage, and how much you rely on incoming calls to the home number. The cited support guidance does not establish provider-specific prices or compare coverage in particular destinations, so confirm those details with the relevant carriers.
Use these questions to compare your options before you buy or activate anything:
- What is the main job of the travel line? If it is for internet access only, a data plan may fit; do not assume it also provides voice service or SMS/MMS.
- What happens to the home plan abroad? Check its roaming terms and charges even if you intend to use another line for data.
- Can the phone use both lines as planned? Verify unlock status, SIM or eSIM support, and model/carrier eligibility.
- Do you need incoming calls on the home number during an active call on the travel line? That depends on the phone and network conditions, not just on which line is selected as the default.
- When should the travel plan start? Follow that provider’s activation instructions; an arrival-time activation option is not a rule for every plan.
These checks matter more than choosing a line based only on whether it is labeled “Home” or “Travel.” A label helps identify the line, but the provider’s coverage, plan inclusions, and device support determine whether it can perform the intended job.
Understand when calls to the other line may not ring
Having two lines enabled does not guarantee that both can handle calls simultaneously. If one line is in use, a call to the other may go to voicemail unless the device, carrier, Wi-Fi Calling, and cellular or data conditions support receiving it. Apple says iPhone reachability on the other line while one line is in use depends on Wi-Fi Calling and data/cellular conditions.
Pixel behavior varies by model. Google states that Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro and earlier cannot receive a call through the other SIM at the same time. Pixel 8a and later can support calls on both SIMs when the stated requirements are met. Check the guidance for the exact model rather than assuming that all dual-SIM phones behave alike; Google’s Pixel dual-SIM article describes the model-specific conditions.
If missing a call would matter, test reachability before depending on it abroad: place a call on one line and have someone call the other, then reverse the test. Confirm the result with your carrier, because device capability alone does not establish that the carrier or plan enables the feature.
This is a separate question from whether both lines appear in the phone’s settings. A line can be enabled and available for outgoing calls yet fail to ring during a call on the other line. If calls to your home number are important, check whether Wi-Fi Calling is available and enabled as needed, whether the phone supports the required behavior, and whether your carrier and plan support it in your destination. Do not infer simultaneous-call support from the fact that the phone accepts two SIMs.
For Pixel in particular, use the exact model’s current guidance: the distinction between Pixel 8 and 8 Pro and earlier, versus Pixel 8a and later, is consequential. The later models’ ability to support calls on both SIMs depends on meeting Google’s stated requirements; it is not an unconditional guarantee for every carrier and network situation.

Check roaming and activation before relying on travel data
Data roaming and the line selected for data are related but different settings. The selected line determines which plan the phone intends to use; roaming settings and carrier terms determine whether that line can connect outside its home coverage area and what charges may apply. Apple specifically warns that roaming charges may apply outside the carrier’s covered country or region.
- Confirm whether the travel plan should be activated before departure or only after arrival.
- Check whether the plan covers the destination and whether coverage depends on a local partner network.
- Read the provider’s current terms for data limits, validity, calls, texts, and roaming.
- After activation, confirm the line is enabled and remains selected for data; do not infer success from the SIM appearing in settings alone.
- If you enable iPhone data switching, account for the possibility that either line may supply data based on coverage and availability.
Google’s eSIM advice is to use a prepaid international eSIM and activate it when arriving at the destination to avoid roaming charges. That is an option, not a universal cost guarantee: the specific provider, plan, phone, and destination determine whether it works as intended.
Before departure, make sure the phone’s chosen line and the plan’s roaming rules agree. If you plan to use a local or prepaid data plan, ask whether it needs roaming enabled to connect to a partner network. For your home line, check what roaming means under that carrier’s plan and whether leaving it enabled could lead to charges. Apple’s warning is deliberately broad: roaming charges may apply when outside the carrier’s covered country or region, so the applicable terms are the ones for your plan.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Google Pixel Phone Help recommends a prepaid international eSIM activated on arrival as a way to avoid roaming charges. Treat that as a possible approach, not as a blanket guarantee: it does not establish that a particular phone is compatible, that a plan covers your destination, or that every plan has the same activation timing. Confirm those points with the eSIM provider before relying on it.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
The phone uses the wrong line for data
Reopen the cellular or SIM settings and check the selected data line. On Pixel, verify the Mobile data default. On iPhone, also inspect Allow Cellular Data Switching if you want to prevent the phone from using the other line based on coverage or availability.
If the intended line is selected but data still does not work, confirm that it is enabled, the plan is active, and the destination is covered. A SIM appearing in the settings list is not proof that activation has completed or that the plan can connect there. Ask the provider to verify the line and plan if the settings look right but service is unavailable.
A call or text goes out from the wrong number
Check the default voice or call line before dialing. On Pixel, review both Calls and Texts defaults; on iPhone, check the default voice line and the line associated with the SMS/MMS conversation. For a new iPhone SMS/MMS conversation on another line, start a new conversation rather than trying to change the line mid-thread.
Remember that call defaults and text defaults are separate. If the number matters, verify which line is selected before sending a carrier text or placing a call. An app-based message is not a carrier SMS/MMS, so changing the carrier text setting may not affect it.
Best Value
The home line cannot receive calls while the other line is active
This may be a device or carrier limitation rather than a faulty data selection. Check whether the phone model supports the needed simultaneous-call behavior and whether Wi-Fi Calling and the required network conditions are available. Test both directions and ask the carrier about the plan.
The travel SIM or eSIM does not work
Recheck that the phone and carrier support the SIM format, the phone is unlocked if required for a different carrier, the plan covers the destination, and activation has occurred at the permitted time. Then confirm that the travel line is enabled and selected for data. If the plan still does not connect, the provider or carrier must verify account, coverage, and activation status.
If the plan is eSIM-based, compatibility still depends on the particular phone and carrier. A travel eSIM is an option, not a universal fix; check the device’s eSIM support and the provider’s destination and activation terms before purchase.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA pre-departure checklist
- Label lines so “Home” and “Travel” are easy to distinguish.
- Set mobile data, calls, and texts separately according to your intended use.
- Review data switching and roaming settings, including possible charges on either line.
- Verify phone unlock status, SIM/eSIM compatibility, destination coverage, activation timing, and plan inclusions.
- Test outgoing calls and carrier texts from the intended number.
- Test whether calls to the other line reach you while the first line is in use, if that matters.
Finally, keep the provider’s activation and support details available while traveling. If service does not behave as expected, the useful facts to share are the phone model, carrier, destination, plan, selected data line, roaming setting, and whether the problem affects calls, texts, or data. The carrier or travel-plan provider can then confirm account and network eligibility for that specific setup.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which SIM should I use for data while traveling?
Choose the line whose plan covers your destination and intended data use, then set it as the mobile-data line. Check coverage, data allowance, activation timing, compatibility, and roaming terms first. On Pixel, only one SIM can be the default for data; on iPhone, review whether Allow Cellular Data Switching could let either line supply data.
Can I keep my regular number for calls and texts while using a travel SIM for data?
On supported dual-SIM devices, data, calls, and texts can have separate defaults. Set the travel line for data and the home line for calls or carrier texts where the phone offers those controls. The home number’s reachability still depends on device, carrier, Wi-Fi Calling, and network conditions.
Will a travel eSIM always avoid roaming charges?
No. Google recommends a prepaid international eSIM activated on arrival as an option for avoiding roaming charges, but compatibility, destination coverage, activation rules, plan terms, and charges vary. Confirm the details with the provider and your carrier.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why might calls to my home SIM go to voicemail while I am using the travel line?
Two enabled SIMs do not guarantee simultaneous calls. On iPhone, receiving calls on the other line while one is in use depends on Wi-Fi Calling and data or cellular conditions. Pixel behavior also varies by model: Google says Pixel 8 and 8 Pro and earlier cannot receive a call through the other SIM at the same time, while Pixel 8a and later can support calls on both SIMs when requirements are met.
Can I change the line for an iPhone SMS/MMS conversation after it has started?
Apple notes that an SMS/MMS conversation started on one line cannot simply be switched to the other line. Start a new conversation on the intended line and check which number is selected before sending.
What should I check before buying a travel SIM or eSIM?
Verify that the phone and carrier support the SIM format and plan, that the phone is unlocked if you will use a different carrier, and that the plan covers your destination. Check data allowance, activation timing, roaming terms, and whether calls or SMS/MMS are included.
The Bottom Line
Choose data, calls, and carrier texts separately: use the travel line for data if its plan, coverage, and compatibility suit your trip, and select the home line for calls or texts only if that is what you want and your plan supports it. Check roaming and activation terms, and do not assume both lines can receive calls at once. The right setup depends on your exact phone, carrier, destination, and plans.
