Check whether repair, a smaller upgrade, or waiting would solve the problem before replacing a working device. Without your candidate devices, budget, and priorities, there is no universally right purchase order.
Start with the problem, not the product
For each possible upgrade, write down what is failing or inconvenient now and what would change if you bought it. A feature is useful only if it improves something you do or need. Consumer Protection New Zealand recommends considering a device’s purpose, frequency of use, expected life, budget, physical fit, and compatibility before buying: choosing electrical products.

Make the list specific. “My laptop is slow” is less useful than “It takes too long to open the work software I use every weekday.” The second description helps you compare a replacement with a repair, a smaller upgrade, or doing nothing for now.

Separate problems that affect safety, an essential task, or access to necessary software and services from cosmetic changes and novelty features. This is a practical way to organize your own list, not a universal ranking: the consequence of postponing an upgrade depends on your circumstances.

For phones and tablets, check whether the current device still receives the operating-system support you need. In the EU, ecodesign requirements applying to covered smartphones and tablets placed on the market from 20 June 2025 address matters including durability, repair access, spare parts, and operating-system upgrades. The European Commission’s page also gives a modeled mid-range smartphone lifetime example of 3.0 years rising to 4.1 years; that is not a promise about any individual phone or user. Check the product and market scope before applying a requirement to a specific device: European Commission smartphone and tablet requirements.
Compare candidates on the same criteria
Use one set of questions for every item on your list. This makes a comparison less vulnerable to whichever product has the most appealing headline feature.

| Ownership cost | What will purchase, installation, energy, maintenance, repair, replacement, and disposal cost over the time you expect to use it? |
| Repair and support | Can the current device be repaired, and how long will the candidate receive necessary support? |
| Compatibility | Will it work with your existing devices, accessories, services, and available space? |
Frequency and importance of use are useful clues, not a formula: a daily device may deserve attention sooner than an occasional convenience, but only if its improvement is worth the cost to you.
Count the cost of owning each gadget
Do not compare candidates by sticker price alone. Include installation where relevant, electricity or other running costs, likely maintenance and repair, replacement over the expected life, and disposal. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) describes these as parts of total cost of ownership: FEMP energy-efficient products and services.

FEMP’s 2024 training uses a light bulb as an illustration: a $10 bulb that uses 20 kWh per year at about $0.10 per kWh for ten years totals $30 in purchase and electricity costs. Those are assumptions in a teaching example, not a current universal electricity price or an estimate for other gadgets.
Estimate costs over a realistic period for each candidate, using current prices and local energy costs where they matter. A cheaper device may cost more to keep running or maintain; a more expensive one may not justify its price if you will rarely use its advantages.

Check repair before replacing a working device
For the gadget you already own, look into its common failure points, likely lifespan, repair price, parts availability, and whether repair instructions or diagnostic tools are accessible. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission notes that repair can be made harder by glued-in batteries, limited spare parts, or unavailable instructions and diagnostic software: FTC guidance on repair restrictions.

Repairability information can add useful context, but it does not settle whether a specific repair is worthwhile. The European Commission Joint Research Centre describes a repairability score from A (most repairable) to E (least repairable), based on disassembly depth, fasteners, tools, spare-part availability, software updates, and repair information: JRC repairability scoring system. A score is one input; check the actual fault, local repair quote, and parts availability for your model.
In the United States, FTC guidance says a manufacturer cannot refuse an otherwise covered warranty repair solely because an independent shop previously did unrelated repair or maintenance, if the warranty has not expired and the later issue is covered. That guidance does not mean every repair is covered or that the same rule applies in every country: FTC repair and warranty guidance.
Check local rules and warranty terms
Repair rights, legal guarantees, and product requirements depend on where you live, the product, and the date. In the EU, the Commission says measures effective 31 July 2026 let consumers request repair for products that are technically repairable under EU law; repair should be free or at a reasonable price and within a reasonable timeframe. Choosing repair within the liability period extends the legal guarantee by at least 12 months. These provisions are jurisdiction- and product-specific, so check whether they cover your purchase: European Commission right-to-repair measures.

- Estimate practical benefit. Note how often the task occurs and the specific improvement the candidate offers.
- Check repair and compatibility. Get information for your current model and verify that a replacement will work with what you own.
- Compare total ownership cost. Use realistic local prices and expected years of use, not just the purchase price.
- Pick the strongest affordable next move. Buy only if it fits without undermining essential expenses; otherwise consider repair, a smaller upgrade, or waiting.
- Set a date to revisit the rest. Recheck your needs, prices, support status, and repair options rather than treating the first ranking as permanent.
