Use window light if it gives your particular plant enough light where its leaves sit. Add a grow light when the window, season, or surroundings leave a shortfall. Neither a “bright” room nor a “low-light” label tells the whole story: plant type, distance from the glass, coverings, outdoor shade, and season all affect what reaches the foliage.
What matters more than window direction
Light at the leaves—not the compass direction of the window or how bright the room looks—is what matters. A plant close to an unobstructed window may receive much more light than one several feet away or just to the side. Curtains, window films, trees, nearby buildings, weather, and the changing angle of the sun can all reduce or alter the light reaching a plant.

South-facing windows can be bright, but no direction is automatically best in every home. Check the care requirements for the plant you have and assess the spot where its foliage will actually be. A light meter or an appropriately calibrated phone tool can help. If you do not have one, observe growth over time and reassess when the seasons or surroundings change.

“Low,” “medium,” and “bright” are useful shorthand, not precise promises about every home or cultivar. University of Maryland Extension’s 2023 examples show how widely indoor light conditions can differ:

| Example light category | Footcandles | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Low light | 25–100 | Maryland Extension’s example range for low-light placements and plants; it is not a universal target for every species. |
| Medium-bright light | 100–500 | An example category in Maryland Extension’s guidance. |
| High light | 500–1,000 | An example category in Maryland Extension’s guidance. |
| Direct indoor sunlight | Over 1,000 | Maryland Extension’s example category; direct exposure may not suit every plant. |
These are illustrative categories, not a universal prescription. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach gives the conversion 1 footcandle = 10.76 lux; the unit conversion does not remove the need to match light to the plant.
When window light is enough—and when to supplement it
Keep the plant at a suitable window when it is thriving
Window light has a broad spectrum suitable for plant growth. If the plant is growing well in a location that meets its needs, a grow light is not necessary just because a fixture is available. Avoid placing a plant in intense direct sun if its care needs call for less exposure.

Consider a grow light when the available light falls short
A supplemental fixture can help in a dim room, during low-light seasons, or when a plant’s needs cannot be met at the window. Unlike daylight, a fixture gives you more control over the placement and duration of light delivered to a defined area. LEDs and fluorescent fixtures are among the available options.

Judge a lamp by plant-useful output at foliage level and whether it covers the plant area—not by wattage or a “full spectrum” label alone. Iowa State Extension notes that watts measure energy use and do not reliably indicate light intensity. Look for documented plant-light metrics such as PPF or PPFD, and consider coverage at the manufacturer’s recommended distance, spectrum, heat, efficiency, and fixture cost.

How to decide and set up supplemental light
- Check the plant’s needs. Identify the light requirements for the particular species and consider whether it has special flowering responses to day length.
- Try an appropriate window position. Choose the brightest suitable location that avoids harmful direct sun for that plant. Reassess if the season changes or foliage, curtains, trees, or nearby structures alter the light.
- Read the plant’s response as a clue. Pale or slow growth, stretched stems, leaning toward light, or reduced flowering can point to insufficient light. Bleached or damaged leaves can point to excessive direct exposure. These symptoms are not proof of a lighting problem, so also consider other care factors.
- Follow the fixture’s distance and coverage guidance. Measure or assess light at foliage level, across the canopy. Moving a fixture closer raises intensity but reduces the area covered and may increase heat near the plant; do not assume one distance works for every lamp or plant.
- Set a timer with daylight in mind. Count window daylight as part of the plant’s total light exposure, and preserve an uninterrupted dark period. Adjust for species-specific flowering responses rather than applying a single schedule to every plant.
How long should a grow light run?
Extension recommendations provide general ranges, not one schedule that suits every plant. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach describes 12–14 hours daily as a general indoor supplemental-light duration and 10–16 hours as a home-gardener range. The University of Illinois Extension advises 14–16 hours of supplemental duration in low-light conditions and no more than 16 hours of total light. Maryland and Illinois Extension guidance also advises no more than 16 hours of total light.
These recommendations should be treated as starting points, not a reason to keep a lamp on around the clock. Account for natural daylight and the plant’s need for darkness. Photoperiod-sensitive plants may flower in response to day length, so their requirements can differ from a general indoor foliage-plant schedule.

For a more technical comparison, Iowa State defines daily light integral (DLI) as plant-useful light delivered over an area during a 24-hour period and gives this calculation for supplemental light: DLI = PPFD × hours of supplemental light × 0.0036. Use the formula only when you have a relevant PPFD value; it is not a substitute for knowing the plant’s requirements or accounting for window light.

Compare the two setups at the leaves
| What to compare | Window light | Supplemental grow light |
|---|---|---|
| Light reaching the foliage | Varies with distance, window coverings, obstructions, weather, and season. | Assess intensity at leaf level and coverage across the plant canopy. |
| Fit for the plant | Depends on the light available at the actual placement and the plant’s needs. | Can supplement a shortfall, but still needs to suit the plant and its growth or flowering response. |
| Control | Changes with the weather, season, and surroundings. | Lets you manage fixture placement and daily duration for a defined area. |
| Practical considerations | May be limited by room layout, window size, or obstructions. | Consider documented output, coverage at the chosen distance, heat, efficiency, cost, and available space. |
