1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose equipment by starting with what your stream will show and how you will produce it—not by buying a camera first. A phone or webcam can be enough for a simple stream; a computer encoder is more suitable when you need gameplay capture, overlays, or separate camera and audio sources. Add a capture device, microphone, tripod, or light only when it solves a specific problem in your setup.
What equipment do you need to live stream?
The essentials depend on the stream path. YouTube describes mobile, webcam, and encoder streams as distinct options, and says you can start with equipment you already have: “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.”

| Stream path | Best suited to | Basic equipment |
|---|---|---|
| Phone | Mobile, quick, or one-device streams | A phone and a suitable internet connection |
| Webcam | A straightforward stream from a computer | A computer with a webcam |
| Computer encoder | Gameplay, overlays, separate camera or audio sources, and more involved productions | A computer, streaming software or encoder, and the video and audio inputs the production needs |
| Professional hardware encoder | Higher-production events | A compatible hardware encoder and the other equipment required by the event workflow |
YouTube presents professional-grade hardware encoders as an option for higher production value, not a requirement for every live stream. Choose based on mobility, desired control over camera and audio, compatibility, network capacity, and how much reliability the event requires. YouTube Help: ways to live stream

Use a phone for a mobile or simple one-device stream
A phone is a sensible starting point when you need to move around or want to keep the setup simple. YouTube includes mobile among its stream types. A separate camera, capture device, and computer are not automatically needed for this path.

Use a webcam for a basic computer-based stream
If you will be seated at a computer and need a simple camera view, a webcam may be enough. YouTube’s webcam path calls for a computer with a webcam. Consider a separate microphone or lighting only if the built-in options do not produce the sound or image your stream needs.
Use an encoder when you need more production control
A computer encoder workflow is appropriate when you need to combine sources—for example, gameplay with a camera, overlays, or separate microphones. YouTube describes encoder streams as common for gameplay, sporting events, concerts, and conferences. Plan for the computer, software or encoder, input devices, and connection as a complete signal path rather than shopping for each item in isolation.
Add equipment only to solve a specific problem
Camera: start with the one you already have
A phone or webcam can be adequate for a simple stream. A dedicated camera becomes more useful when you need a particular framing, lens choice, placement, or image control. Before buying, make sure its output can connect to the rest of your setup in the way you intend.

Capture device: required for some camera-to-computer workflows
If you want to send a camera’s HDMI output into a computer, you may need a capture device. Nikon says its HDMI streaming method requires a third-party capture device, and Sony documents a camera-HDMI-to-capture-device connection. Check the exact camera output, capture-device inputs, supported signal formats, computer connections, operating-system support, and software compatibility before purchasing; compatibility varies by model and can change with firmware or software.
A capture device is not a universal requirement: phone and webcam workflows may not need one. See Nikon’s camera streaming guide and Sony’s HDMI capture-device guidance for their respective camera workflows.
Microphone: match pickup to the speaker and room
An external microphone is worth considering when the built-in mic is poorly placed for the speaker or picks up too much of the environment. Choose according to the setup—camera-mounted, desk-based, or shared by multiple people—rather than assuming one microphone type fits every stream. YouTube identifies microphones as equipment used in encoder setups, and Nikon lists external microphones as an option.

Tripod: stabilize a fixed camera position
A tripod helps keep a camera steady and its framing repeatable. It is useful for a fixed position, but unnecessary if your existing device already sits securely where you need it.

A constant light source can help when available room lighting does not give you the even illumination you want. Consider the shot and room before adding a light; no particular lighting purchase is required for every stream.
Cables and power: verify the actual devices
Check connector types, cable reach, continuous-power options, and device limitations against your camera and capture workflow. Requirements depend on the equipment; do not assume every camera needs the same cable, power adapter, or capture connection.

Check computer capacity and encoder settings
A computer that meets software compatibility requirements is not necessarily capable of streaming your intended scene smoothly. OBS notes that encoding demand varies with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Hardware encoding can shift work from the CPU to a specialized component and reduce CPU load, but supported formats and quality depend on the hardware generation and software path. Neither hardware nor software encoding is universally better; select a compatible option and test it at the settings you plan to use.
- Run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard. It considers your intended use, hardware, and network conditions and provides a starting point.
- Build the actual scene you intend to stream, including the camera, game or other sources, overlays, and audio inputs.
- Test at the planned resolution and frame rate, and watch for performance problems with the full scene—not just an empty preview.
OBS describes its system requirements and configuration guidance at OBS system requirements and Auto-Configuration Wizard.

Match resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to the connection
Your upload connection and the destination platform constrain the stream. YouTube advises testing upload bitrate and choosing a reliable quality for the available connection. The creator sets resolution, frame rate, and bitrate in the encoder; YouTube then transcodes streams for different viewing formats. A high resolution is not useful if the connection or computer cannot sustain it.

- Check the current requirements for your destination and account, since platform specifications can change.
- Test the upload connection, then select a resolution and frame rate your connection and computer can maintain reliably.
- Set the encoder’s video bitrate within both the available upload capacity and the service’s limits. OBS says bitrate depends on upload speed and the streaming service’s limits.
- Test with motion and audio similar to the real stream. A static test may not reveal how a gameplay scene, camera movement, or multiple sources affect performance.
OBS describes around 160 kbps as a typical audio bitrate setting for streaming, with a lower audio bitrate an option when upload speed is limited. This is software guidance, not a universal platform limit or a guarantee of audio quality; check the current destination specifications. OBS also recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP, for YouTube Live. Confirm that your encoder supports the protocol you select.
For these platform and software details, see YouTube’s live encoder settings and OBS’s streaming overview.
Rehearse the complete stream and plan for failures
- Start a short test stream before the event. OBS strongly encourages a test before streaming or recording.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and confirm the picture and audio are coming through as intended.
- Monitor both audio and video during the stream rather than assuming a good preview guarantees that the live output remains correct.
- For an important encoder-based event, set up in advance and test backup-encoder failover. A backup is useful only if the alternate path and handoff have been checked.
See OBS’s quick-start guide, YouTube’s encoder setup guidance, and YouTube’s live streaming operations guidance.
Troubleshoot common equipment-selection problems
- The camera image does not appear in the computer. Check that the camera output and capture device are compatible, the cable is connected to the correct ports, and the computer and streaming software support the device. For HDMI camera workflows, confirm the camera actually provides the intended output and the capture device accepts it.
- The stream stutters or drops frames. The computer may not be sustaining the selected encoder, resolution, frame rate, or scene complexity, or the upload connection may be insufficient. Test the full scene, revisit OBS’s wizard starting point, and choose settings your equipment can sustain.
- The chosen quality is unreliable online. Retest upload capacity and reduce the stream’s demands to a reliable level. Check the current destination limits and test with motion and audio representative of the event.
- The picture is steady but the sound is poor. Assess microphone position and the room. An external mic may help if the built-in microphone is unsuitable for the speaker’s location or environment.
- The subject is dim or unevenly lit. Check the room’s existing light and camera position; add continuous lighting only if it addresses the problem in the intended shot.
- A backup encoder is available but may not take over cleanly. Test failover in advance. YouTube’s operations guidance describes setting up and testing backup-encoder failover for encoder events.
