The right WordPress hosting plan in 2026 is the least expensive option that meets WordPress’s current software requirements, provides enough capacity for your site’s workload, and leaves you comfortable with the server work you must do. Start by confirming PHP 8.3 or newer, MariaDB 10.11 or newer or MySQL 8.0 or newer, HTTPS, and a properly configured Apache or Nginx environment. Then choose among shared, managed, cloud, VPS, or specialized hosting according to traffic, database demand, concurrency, isolation, growth, and your operational skills.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
Do not choose from the introductory price alone. Renewal charges, billing term, site limits, resource throttling, backup retention, update responsibilities, migration help, support scope, and cancellation rules determine the plan’s real value.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors1. Confirm the 2026 compatibility floor
Before comparing storage quotas or promotional prices, ask whether the host can run a current WordPress stack. WordPress.org currently recommends PHP 8.3 or greater, MariaDB 10.11 or greater or MySQL 8.0 or greater, and HTTPS. Apache or Nginx is recommended for a robust environment, with the rewrite functionality WordPress expects.
| Requirement | 2026 baseline | What to verify with the host |
|---|---|---|
| PHP | 8.3 or newer | Which PHP versions are available today, how quickly new supported releases are offered, and whether you can change versions per site |
| Database | MariaDB 10.11 or newer, or MySQL 8.0 or newer | Exact engine and version, database limits, remote-access policy, and upgrade procedure |
| Transport security | HTTPS | Whether a certificate is included, renewed automatically, and installed for every domain and subdomain |
| Web server | Apache or Nginx | Whether URL rewriting and the configuration WordPress needs are enabled |
Older PHP and MySQL releases may still run WordPress, but end-of-life software no longer receives normal security fixes and can expose a site to avoidable vulnerabilities. The Make WordPress Hosting Handbook records that PHP 8.3 moved to security-only support on 31 December 2025 and that PHP 8.2 reaches end of life on 31 December 2026. A host that cannot describe its upgrade path is a poor long-term choice, even if the current site works.

Questions that expose compatibility problems
- Can I select PHP 8.3 or a newer supported release in the control panel?
- How soon after an upstream PHP release do you make it available?
- Can I test a PHP upgrade on staging before changing production?
- Will you help resolve plugin or theme incompatibilities during a PHP migration?
- Are HTTPS certificates included for aliases, subdomains, and staging URLs?
2. Measure the site’s actual workload
Hosting labels are not workload measurements. A low-traffic membership site can use more CPU and database capacity than a much busier brochure site because every logged-in request is dynamic. Gather a few weeks of analytics and application information before selecting a tier.
Traffic and concurrency
Record monthly visits, peak-hour requests, and the largest simultaneous audience you expect during launches, news events, or campaigns. “Visits per month” claims in advertising are not a substitute for a defined CPU, memory, PHP-worker, or database allowance. Ask how the provider measures a visit and what happens when the allowance is exceeded: throttling, temporary suspension, automatic billing, or a required upgrade.
Database intensity
Catalog features that read or write frequently: WooCommerce carts and orders, memberships, search, filtering, forums, learning platforms, and extensive custom fields. These workloads benefit from adequate memory and fast database storage. A memory-optimized plan is generally more appropriate for database-heavy work than a general-purpose plan with a larger disk quota.
CPU-intensive work
Image processing, video jobs, feed imports, recommendation engines, large exports, and scheduled reporting can consume CPU even when visitor numbers are modest. CPU-optimized plans are designed for computationally intensive workloads; confirm whether background jobs share resources with web requests and whether cron jobs can be scheduled independently.
Storage and file behavior
Estimate current media, backups, staging copies, logs, and growth rather than counting only the WordPress installation. Check storage type, inode or file-count limits, maximum upload size, and whether backups count against the quota. A generous capacity figure is less useful if a file-count ceiling or upload restriction blocks routine operations.
Growth and isolation
Note expected campaigns, additional sites, geographic expansion, and integrations. Growth may require elastic cloud resources, a larger fixed plan, or migration to a VPS. If another customer’s activity could affect response time, ask what isolation is provided and how resource contention is detected.

3. Match the hosting model to the work you want handled
| Hosting model | Best fit | Provider typically handles | Trade-offs to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry shared hosting | Small blogs, portfolios, and brochure sites with modest traffic and plugin use | Basic server maintenance and account-level tools | Shared resources, possible throttling, limited isolation, and narrower support; verify backup scope |
| Managed WordPress hosting | Owners who want WordPress-focused operations rather than server administration | Depending on the plan: core updates, security controls, backups, caching, migrations, and WordPress-specialist support | Higher price and more policy restrictions; confirm exactly which updates, restores, plugins, and staging features are included |
| Cloud hosting | Sites needing an expansion path or more elastic resources | Infrastructure distributed across cloud resources; management varies by provider | Scaling may be automatic, metered, or require a plan change; clarify billing and limits before launch |
| VPS hosting | Medium-traffic sites needing clearer allocation and more control | Resources are allocated to a virtual server; on self-managed plans, you administer the operating system and stack | Self-managed VPS requires server expertise; managed VPS reduces that work at additional cost |
| Specialized or enterprise hosting | High concurrency, complex stores, agencies, or strict isolation and support requirements | Higher-touch architecture, support, and operational controls vary by contract | Higher cost and more complex contracts; demand written service, security, and escalation terms |
When shared hosting is enough
Choose an entry shared plan when one or a few sites have predictable, modest demand, no unusual background processing, and an owner who values simple setup over isolated resources. Confirm the account’s CPU, memory, process, PHP-worker, and database limits, not just disk space. Ask whether a traffic spike triggers throttling and whether support will investigate plugin-related resource use.
When managed WordPress is worth paying for
Managed hosting makes sense when updates, security, caching, backups, and migration work would otherwise fall to you or a small team. It is particularly useful for owners who do not maintain Linux servers. Read the service description line by line: “managed” can mean automatic core updates while leaving plugins, PHP upgrades, malware cleanup, and restores to the customer.
When cloud or VPS is the next step
Cloud hosting suits a site whose resource needs change sharply or whose owner wants a documented scaling path. VPS hosting suits a workload that benefits from dedicated allocations, custom software, or stronger isolation. Choose a managed VPS if you cannot patch, secure, monitor, and recover a server yourself; choose self-managed only when those responsibilities are part of your normal operations.
When specialized infrastructure is justified
Consider a specialized or enterprise arrangement for sustained concurrent traffic, a large WooCommerce catalog, complex reporting databases, multiple client sites, strict recovery objectives, or contractual support requirements. At this level, evaluate architecture and escalation commitments rather than comparing consumer plan names.

4. Compare resource behavior, not marketing labels
PHP workers and concurrent requests
PHP workers determine how many dynamic requests can execute at once. Too few workers create queues during checkout, login, publishing, or traffic spikes even when the server has unused storage. Ask for the worker allowance, whether it can be increased, and which response you receive when all workers are busy.
Memory and database headroom
Memory is consumed by WordPress, plugins, object caches, database processes, and operating-system services. A database-heavy site should prioritize predictable memory and fast database performance over an oversized media quota. Ask whether database resources are shared, capped, or burstable and whether slow-query diagnosis is available.

CPU allocation and throttling
Find out whether CPU is shared, guaranteed, or burstable, how usage is measured, and what thresholds trigger throttling. Request the provider’s procedure for identifying a misbehaving plugin or cron task before it affects every site in the account.
Elasticity and scaling mechanics
“Scalable” can mean several different things. Determine whether resources increase automatically, whether usage is metered by the hour or month, or whether an employee must move you to a larger plan. Confirm the maximum size, expected propagation time, and whether scaling causes a restart or migration.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Data-center location, caching, and CDN
Choose a data-center region close to most readers when latency matters, then ask how origin location interacts with the provider’s caching layer and CDN. Verify whether full-page caching works with logged-in areas, carts, and personalized content. A CDN can reduce latency for static files but does not replace adequate PHP and database capacity at the origin.
5. Calculate the full contract cost
Write down the first-term total and the renewal total separately. Introductory pricing often applies only to a particular billing term, while renewal pricing, add-ons, taxes, and overage charges determine what you will pay later.
- Introductory price and the term required to receive it
- Renewal price and the date or event that changes the rate
- Number of included sites, domains, mailboxes, and staging environments
- Storage, bandwidth, CPU, memory, PHP-worker, database, and file-count limits
- Visit or resource allowances and the consequence of exceeding them
- Backup frequency, retention, storage location, and restore fees
- CDN, caching, malware protection, staging, and migration charges
- Support hours, channels, response targets, and escalation rules
- Cancellation, refund, account-closure, and data-export terms
For a fair comparison, calculate the first billing term plus every mandatory add-on, then repeat the calculation at renewal. A cheaper plan can become more expensive if it includes fewer sites, shorter backup retention, paid migrations, or a lower resource ceiling that forces an early upgrade.
6. Make backups and security acceptance criteria
Backups you can actually restore
Ask whether backups are automatic, stored off-site, retained for a defined period, and available for one-click restoration. Clarify whether a backup contains both files and databases, whether staging and mail are included, and whether you can download an independent copy. Request a test restore or document the exact steps before trusting the service with a production store.

Who updates each layer
Assign responsibility for WordPress core, plugins, themes, PHP, the operating system, and server software. Automatic core updates do not necessarily cover third-party plugins or PHP. Establish whether updates are tested on staging, how failed updates are rolled back, and who responds when an extension becomes incompatible with a new PHP release.
Malware and account security
Determine what malware monitoring includes, whether cleanup is included or billed separately, and how quickly the provider isolates an infected site. Confirm HTTPS renewal, account-level multi-factor authentication, least-privilege access, secure SFTP or SSH options, firewall controls, and logging. Keep administrator credentials unique and remove access for former contractors.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Evaluate support and migration before you need them
WordPress documentation suggests that new users choose a provider with WordPress experience and notes that hosts may provide backups, updates, and developer tools. Use that as a starting point, then test the actual support boundary.
Recommended Free Tools
Pre-sales support test
- Send the host your PHP, database, traffic, plugin, and migration requirements.
- Ask which team handles server, WordPress, database, and security questions.
- Request written answers about limits, backup retention, restore timing, and PHP upgrades.
- Ask for an example of the escalation path when a site is slow or compromised.
- Save the answers so the sales promise can be compared with the contract and knowledge base.
Migration checklist
- Create a complete file and database backup and verify that it can be opened.
- Build the destination site with HTTPS, the target PHP version, and the required database engine.
- Copy files and import the database, then update the site URL only if the domain is changing.
- Use a temporary or staging address to test logins, forms, media, permalinks, cron jobs, email, payments, and caching.
- Lower DNS time-to-live in advance when you control DNS and plan a cutover.
- Freeze content briefly, take a final database backup, switch DNS, and monitor errors and transactions.
- Keep the old account available until the new site is stable and the final backup is stored separately.
Ask whether the provider performs these steps, whether migration downtime is expected, and whether the migration team will troubleshoot plugin or DNS issues. “Free migration” is meaningful only when its scope and limits are written down.
8. Practical choices by site type
New blog or brochure site
Begin with entry shared or managed hosting if traffic is modest, the plugin set is conventional, and you do not need custom server software. Favor clear backups, HTTPS, current PHP, and responsive WordPress support over a large unused storage quota.
Portfolio or small business site
A managed plan can be worthwhile when the site represents a business and downtime or an outdated plugin carries reputational cost. Confirm staging and restore procedures before making changes, especially if several people publish content.
Best Value
Online store or membership site
Prioritize PHP-worker capacity, memory, database performance, object caching, and reliable backups. Ask how carts, sessions, scheduled jobs, and payment callbacks interact with full-page caching. Move beyond entry shared hosting when concurrent checkouts or database writes routinely approach the account’s limits.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Growing publication
A publication with campaigns or unpredictable readership should compare managed, cloud, and VPS options. Verify how quickly resources can be added, whether scaling is automatic or metered, and how cache purges and deployment workflows work during a traffic surge.
Agency or multiple-site portfolio
Count every production, staging, and client site in the contract. Look for per-site isolation, role-based access, transferable ownership, bulk staging, and a migration process that does not require repeating manual work for each domain.
Technical owner with server skills
A self-managed VPS can provide control over versions, services, and deployment, but you become responsible for patching, monitoring, firewalls, backups, recovery, and incident response. Price the engineering time and a tested recovery plan, not just the virtual machine.
9. Red flags and recovery actions
| Red flag or symptom | Why it matters | Action before signing |
|---|---|---|
| Only an old PHP release is offered | You may be forced onto unsupported software before the contract ends | Request the PHP roadmap and choose a host with a supported upgrade path |
| “Unlimited” resources without measurable limits | Fair-use throttling can still interrupt busy sites | Ask for CPU, memory, workers, process, database, and file-count policies in writing |
| Backups described without retention or restore details | A backup that cannot be recovered is not a dependable recovery control | Confirm off-site storage, retention, included components, and test-restore steps |
| Managed service with vague responsibilities | You may assume the provider handles plugins, PHP, or malware when it does not | Assign every update and incident task explicitly |
| Scaling requires an unexplained manual move | A campaign can expose the site to delay or downtime | Document the trigger, lead time, price, and maximum available tier |
| Support cannot answer technical questions | Problems may be routed between teams during an outage | Test pre-sales support and obtain an escalation route |
| Migration offer excludes databases or DNS | The advertised “free” move may leave you with the hardest work | Get a written migration scope and downtime estimate |
10. Use a finalist worksheet
For every remaining plan, record the same evidence instead of relying on memory. Include the exact PHP and database versions; number of sites; storage and file limits; CPU, memory, workers, and database allowances; first-term and renewal totals; backup frequency, retention, and restore method; staging and migration tools; caching and CDN access; data-center region; support channels and hours; update and malware responsibilities; scaling mechanics; and cancellation terms.
Mark each item as a contractual guarantee, a documented limit, a support promise, or a marketing claim. Give priority to contractual limits and recovery capabilities. If two plans remain viable, choose the one whose operational responsibilities, upgrade path, and total cost are clearest.
Final decision
Choose entry shared or managed hosting for a modest site with conventional needs; move to managed, cloud, or VPS infrastructure as database demand, concurrency, growth, or isolation requirements increase. The deciding evidence is not a headline visit number. It is a compatible software stack, enough measured capacity, dependable backups, a clear security and update owner, practical migration help, and a renewal price you can sustain. Treat PHP lifecycle support—especially PHP 8.2’s 31 December 2026 end-of-life date—as part of the purchase decision, not a problem to solve after launch.
