In Valheim multiplayer, a portal is a paired fast-travel point: give two portals the same exact, case-sensitive tag and a player can walk through one to reach the other. A standard portal checks the traveler’s inventory before teleporting. One prohibited item is enough to stop the trip, and the portal transports only the player—not a cart, boat, or tamed animal.

That makes portals excellent for moving people, food, wood, trophies, and building supplies between a base and a remote outpost, but unsuitable for ordinary metal transport. Ore and ingots still need a physical route unless the world uses the Portal Items modifier or the group has access to the late-game Ashlands Portal Stone.

What a portal does in a multiplayer world
Portals do not create a shared public network automatically. Each connection is made by a tag. When exactly two portals have the same tag, those two structures form a link that any player in the world can use.
The teleport is personal. If you arrive at a mining camp through a portal, your cart remains at the base, your boat remains at its dock, and a tamed animal stays where it was. A portal therefore solves player travel and emergency return trips, but it does not replace hauling infrastructure.
Every player on the server follows the same portal rules established by the world’s settings. A player carrying a restricted item cannot bypass the restriction simply because another person built the portal or because the destination is in a different biome.
Building and linking two standard portals
Materials and unlock requirements
A standard Portal costs 10 Greydwarf Eyes, 20 Finewood, and 2 Surtling Cores. It is built at a Workbench. The recipe becomes available after you have obtained Finewood, a Greydwarf Eye, and a Surtling Core.

Construction and connection steps
- Gather the three recipe materials and unlock the portal recipe by obtaining at least one Finewood, one Greydwarf Eye, and one Surtling Core.
- Place the first Portal at the location where players will depart, such as a main base or a protected shoreline.
- Build a second Portal at the destination, such as a swamp edge, mountain approach, dungeon outpost, or Ashlands staging area. Each portal must be fully constructed at its own site.
- Interact with the first portal and enter a tag. Interact with the second and enter the identical tag, including capitalization, punctuation, and every character.
- Walk through either portal. With a matching pair and no blocked inventory item, the game sends the player to the other portal.
Tag rules that matter in a group
Tags are case-sensitive and can contain up to 10 characters. Base01 and base01 are different tags. A single typo, an extra space, or a different capital letter leaves the portals unlinked.

Do not treat one tag as a shared hub. When three or more portals use the same tag, the game pairs them into separate two-portal links rather than routing every portal to every other portal. The resulting pairing can be confusing when several people are building at once. Use a distinct tag for each route and keep a written or shared list of the names your group has assigned.
Choose short names that fit the 10-character limit and describe the destination. For example, home-swamp fits the limit; a team could use similarly short labels for a mountain mine, plains farm, or temporary exploration site. Rename an exploration portal deliberately when repurposing it, rather than leaving several unattended structures with the same tag.
Inventory restrictions on normal portals
A standard portal evaluates the entire inventory at the moment you try to pass through. If you carry even one blocked item, the attempt fails. The portal does not remove the offending item and teleport you with everything else; you must change what you are carrying before the trip can succeed.

Items documented as blocked
- Copper, iron, silver, and bronze, including their ores, scraps, or equivalent progression materials.
- Black metal and its associated ore or scrap.
- Flametal and Flametal Ore.
- Dragon Eggs.
- Hildir chests.
- Dvergr Extractors.
- Mechanical Springs.
- Charred Cogwheels.
- Other material entries designated as restricted by the game’s portal rules.
Because the check is all-or-nothing, put prohibited cargo in a chest, on a ship, in a cart, or at the outpost before attempting to teleport. Then make the player trip separately. Wood, food, trophies, Greydwarf Eyes, Surtling Cores, and portal-building materials can normally travel through standard portals, so a remote outpost can remain supplied even while its metal stock waits for a physical shipment.
A practical cooperative mining pattern
- Build and tag a portal at the mining or dungeon location.
- Use it to move players, replacement tools that are allowed, food, construction materials, and other non-restricted supplies.
- Deposit mined metal at the outpost instead of carrying it into the portal.
- Send the metal by ship, cart, or another physical route while the portal handles the crew’s return trips.
- Keep a second supply chest near each end so a returning player does not have to make an unnecessary surface journey for basic building materials.
This division of labor is especially useful in multiplayer: one player can organize the physical cargo run while others continue gathering or building through the linked portal.
Portal Stone: the late-game cargo exception
The Ashlands Portal Stone, also listed as Portal – Stone, is a late-game variant that permits blocked cargo, including ores and ingots. It is built at a Stonecutter and costs 10 Greydwarf Eyes, 30 Grausten, and 2 Molten Cores.

The Portal Stone is a fixed-site solution, not a reason to ignore normal portal planning. A group still needs to decide where the stone structure belongs, who can reach it, and which routes should remain available through ordinary portals. Until the stone is available, metal logistics remain physical unless the world modifier changes the rule.
World modifiers can change the answer
Before troubleshooting a portal trip, check the world’s modifier configuration. Two multiplayer worlds can produce different results from the same inventory because their portal policies differ.
| World setting | Portal behavior |
|---|---|
Normal |
Retains the standard restrictions on blocked items. |
Portal Items |
Allows anything through a portal. |
No boss portals |
Limits portal use during boss conditions. |
No portals |
Disables portals. |
Record the setting when explaining a server’s rules to new players. “Can I teleport this ore?” has no single answer across all worlds: under Normal, restricted cargo fails; under Portal Items, it is allowed; under No portals, there is no portal trip to attempt.

Designing a reliable multiplayer portal network
Use one route per tag
Assign a unique, short tag to every permanent connection. A simple convention can encode the destination and purpose, such as a home-to-swamp route, a mountain resource route, and a plains farming route, provided each label stays within 10 characters. Keep capitalization consistent across the group.

Temporary exploration portals are useful, but a renamed portal changes which destination its tag identifies. Before changing a tag, tell everyone online and update the group’s route list. If a player steps through while a temporary link is being reorganized, they may arrive at a different destination than expected.
Place outposts for the people, not the cargo
A remote portal should be close enough to the activity it serves that players do not spend the saved travel time walking from the arrival point. Add storage and building materials at the outpost, but plan a separate route for prohibited metals. Since carts, boats, and animals do not teleport, leave those tools at the site where they will actually be used.
Plan for failure recovery
Keep the destination’s tag written on a sign or in the team’s shared notes. If a portal is damaged, renamed, or replaced, the surviving partner’s exact tag is the quickest way to restore the connection. A small reserve of portal materials at the main base also lets the group rebuild a lost endpoint without first making a long expedition for supplies.
Troubleshooting a portal that will not connect
- Check the tag character by character. Confirm spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and spaces on both portals. Verify that the tag does not exceed 10 characters.
- Look for a third portal using the same tag. Three or more matching tags are paired into separate links, so rename the temporary or unwanted portal and retest the intended pair.
- Inspect every inventory slot. Search for copper, iron, silver, bronze, black metal, Flametal, Dragon Eggs, Hildir chests, Dvergr Extractors, Mechanical Springs, Charred Cogwheels, ores, scraps, and other restricted material entries. Move the item to storage and try again.
- Confirm the world modifier. A
No portalsworld disables the system, whileNo boss portalscan limit use during boss conditions. A world set toPortal Itemsfollows different cargo rules fromNormal. - Verify that both endpoints still exist. A missing, replaced, or renamed portal breaks the expected route until a matching partner is rebuilt or retagged.
- Consider a version-related multiplayer issue. If players also see terrain seams, reverted terrain modifications, or unusual performance around portals, record the world state and check the latest official patch notes before rebuilding the network repeatedly.
Version notes for current multiplayer worlds
Iron Gate’s September 17, 2026 Patch 1.0.14 notes reported a fix for a multiplayer bug in which terrain modifications by players or monsters could lead to performance and portal issues, including terrain seams and terrain changes becoming undone. That fix matters when a portal problem appears alongside world-terrain symptoms rather than an incorrect tag or inventory.

The October 15, 2026 Patch 1.0.20 notes reviewed for current portal-rule context discuss trophy drops, exploit fixes, save behavior, and platform issues but do not announce a change to the standard portal restrictions. Portal behavior can still change in a later update, so check new official notes after patches—particularly if a previously reliable route starts behaving differently.
Quick Recap
Quick reference for a server crew
- Build standard portals with 10 Greydwarf Eyes, 20 Finewood, and 2 Surtling Cores at a Workbench.
- Use two portals and exactly matching, case-sensitive tags of no more than 10 characters.
- Do not use one tag as a hub; three or more matching portals form separate pairs.
- Normal portals move players only and reject a trip when any blocked item is carried.
- Ship, cart, or otherwise physically move restricted metals and other blocked cargo.
- Use the Ashlands Portal Stone, crafted at a Stonecutter from 10 Greydwarf Eyes, 30 Grausten, and 2 Molten Cores, when late-game blocked-cargo transport is required.
- State the world modifier whenever giving multiplayer portal advice.
