Choose an ultra-short-throw (UST) projector by confirming that its model-specific placement chart fits your room, screen size and furniture—not by relying on the “UST” label alone. Measure the usable screen area and the distance from the projector’s lens to the screen, then compare candidates for lighting, picture features, gaming, audio and total setup cost.
Start with the room, not the projector
Before comparing models, record the dimensions that determine whether a projector can work in your space:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Usable screen or wall width, including any frame or border.
- Desired image diagonal and aspect ratio.
- Available distance from the projector lens to the screen.
- Console depth and the position of nearby furniture or speakers.
- Viewing distance from the screen to your usual seating.
A projector’s throw ratio is the lens-to-screen distance divided by the projected image width—not its diagonal. A lower ratio means the projector can create a given image width from a shorter distance. As a quick geometry check, multiply the throw ratio by the image width to estimate the required lens-to-screen distance. This calculation helps narrow options, but the manufacturer’s placement chart is the deciding reference for a specific model.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor scale, RTINGS gives an 87.2-inch width for a 100-inch, 16:9 image. That is the picture area, so allow additional room for screen borders, frame, nearby furniture and speakers. RTINGS also illustrates that at a fixed 0.25 throw ratio, a 100-inch image is about 1 ft 10 in from the lens to the screen, while a 120-inch image is about 2 ft 2 in away. These are examples, not placement promises for every UST projector; actual optics and zoom vary. See RTINGS’ throw-distance guide.

Check the exact placement chart
Once you have a target image size, look up the placement drawing or calculator for each candidate. Confirm the lens-to-screen distance at that size, along with the model’s supported image-size range. Measure from the lens—not the back of the projector—and account for the chassis depth when deciding where the unit and console can sit.
This step matters because “ultra-short throw” is a broad category rather than a guarantee of identical placement. RTINGS groups ratios below 0.4 as UST, while Christie describes UST as 0.25–0.5:1. The definitions differ, so compare the exact throw ratio and drawing for the model you are considering rather than using the category name as a measurement. See RTINGS and Christie’s explanation of short- and ultra-short-throw projectors.

Choose an image size that suits the wall and seating
Pick a size that fits the usable screen area and feels comfortable from your actual seats. Epson’s general guide relates screen size to room type and seating: it suggests about 50–100 inches for a small living room, 100–150 inches for a medium home theater and 150–300 inches for a large theater. These are manufacturer starting ranges, not a prescription for every room. Wall width, aspect ratio, viewing preference and each projector’s minimum and maximum image sizes still apply. Consult Epson’s projector buying guide alongside the model’s own size specifications.

Match brightness and screen to the room’s lighting
More projector brightness can be useful in a brighter room, but the amount you need depends on the environment; there is no universal lumen threshold established here. Compare brightness figures using their measurement standards, and consider how much light you can control during viewing.

A UST-compatible ambient-light-rejecting (ALR) screen may help when the room has meaningful ambient light. Compatibility, screen size and alignment matter, so check that the screen is designed for UST projection and fits the projector’s image. In a light-controlled room, a standard matte-white screen may be adequate. Christie discusses environment-dependent brightness, while ProjectorScreen.com’s UST buying guide and AudioVideoNation’s guide, updated July 10, 2026 cover screen considerations.

A practical room-fit decision
- Measure: note the usable screen width, target diagonal and aspect ratio, lens-to-screen space, console depth and seating distance.
- Shortlist by placement: use each model’s chart to verify your target size and lens position. Remove any model that cannot fit the image or projector in the available space.
- Plan the screen and lighting: decide how much ambient light will remain during viewing, then compare a suitable UST ALR screen with a matte-white option for a controlled room.
- Compare the remaining systems: check picture, gaming, connections, audio, smart features, ownership terms and the cost of the complete installation.
- Verify before purchase: confirm current manufacturer specifications, placement guidance, warranty and availability for the exact model and region.
