For 4K TVs, Sony’s reference minimum viewing distance is 1.5 times the screen’s vertical height. It is a pixel-visibility reference, not a universal ideal: comfort, room layout, content and personal preference matter too.
Measure the viewing distance from your seat
Use the distance from your eyes in your normal viewing position to the plane of the screen—not the room’s full depth. The location of the sofa or chair, the TV’s position and how far you sit back determine the distance that matters.

- Sit where you expect to watch most often.
- Measure from your eye position to the screen location. If the TV is not installed, measure to the intended screen plane.
- Use that measurement to compare screen sizes, and check that the TV’s actual dimensions will fit its intended location.
How far should you sit from your TV?
Distance guidance depends on what question the rule is answering. Sony’s support guidance gives minimum reference distances by resolution; its TV-selection guide offers a broader size-to-distance rule. They are framed differently, so do not treat them as interchangeable guarantees of the best seat or screen size.

Use Sony’s 4K reference correctly
Sony Support states: “The recommended distance for watching a 4K TV is 1.5 times the TV’s vertical screen size.” The calculation uses the screen’s height, not its diagonal size. Sony describes the result as a minimum reference and says to adjust it to personal preference, the program and the viewing environment.

Resolution changes Sony’s minimum references: its guidance lists a shorter minimum for 4K than for HD or SD. That does not mean every viewer will prefer sitting close to the 4K minimum, or that resolution alone determines the right screen size.
What size TV should I get?
Once you know your normal viewing distance, choose how large you want the picture to feel from that seat. A larger screen at the same distance occupies more of your field of view and can feel more immersive; the right balance depends on your comfort and what you watch.

- Distance: Compare candidate sizes from your actual seat, not from a nominal room measurement.
- Resolution and detail: Use resolution-based distance guidance as a reference for resolving image detail, not as a mandatory seating position.
- Content and use: Consider whether the TV will mainly show movies, sports, games or everyday programs. Different viewing habits can change what feels comfortable.
- Room layout: Account for furniture, the screen location and the way the room is used.
- Personal comfort: If choosing between two sizes, consider whether the larger option feels comfortable during normal viewing.
No single screen size is right for every room, and the manufacturer rules above do not establish one universal field-of-view target for home viewing.

Screen size is commonly expressed as a diagonal measurement, but installation depends on the TV’s full physical dimensions and the available space. Confirm the specific TV’s dimensions and that the screen can be placed in the location you intend. The distance formulas do not determine whether a particular model or installation will fit.
