A matte screen or an art-focused design can help, but neither alone guarantees that artwork will look convincing. Compare the exact model in the conditions where you plan to install it.
Can you use a regular TV to display art?
Yes. Any TV that can show your images can display digital art; a dedicated art mode is an optional convenience, not a requirement. Lifestyle TVs such as Samsung’s The Frame add an idle presentation intended to look more like wall art. Samsung describes The Frame as a TV with a matte display and a design intended to blend into a room: Samsung The Frame.

A regular TV may suit you better if you mainly want a screen for video and are comfortable selecting a still image or slideshow yourself. An art-focused model may be worth comparing if you care about a picture-like idle screen, artwork controls, or a design that feels less like a conventional television. Decide based on the specific functions and image quality of the model, not its category name.

Start with the room: light, reflections, and viewing position
Artwork is static, so reflections and changes in the room’s light remain visible instead of being masked by movement. Think about direct light from windows and lamps, diffuse glare, how bright the room is during the day, and where people will sit or stand. RTINGS explains that reflection handling depends on more than whether a screen is matte or glossy: RTINGS’ guide to glossy and matte TV screens.

- MAKES ART LOOK LIKE REAL ART WITH A PRINT-LIKE FINISH: See your favorite works like you're seeing them hanging in a gallery or museum. The virtually glare-free screen has subtle, matte texture, making art look like a real print.
- Direct reflections: A visible window or lamp reflected in the screen can compete with the image. Some glossy TVs handle direct reflections well, so gloss alone does not tell you how distracting they will be.
- Diffuse glare: Matte coatings scatter reflections, which can make them less mirror-like. That does not necessarily remove the glow across the screen; diffuse light can still reduce contrast.
- Ambient black-level rise: Room light can make blacks appear lighter and dark colors less distinct. Matte treatment does not prevent this effect.
- Bright-room color: Ambient light can wash out colors, including darker or saturated shades. A brighter panel may help the image remain visible, but brightness alone does not eliminate reflections or preserve color in every room.
- Viewing angle: If people will view the art from the side, check how the exact model looks off-axis as well as from directly in front.
When possible, assess a candidate screen under lighting similar to your own room, rather than relying only on showroom appearance or the finish listed in a specification.
Check color performance on the exact model
For digital art, look for independent measurements and reviews of color accuracy, saturation, and the handling of dark and highly saturated colors. Prefer evidence for the exact model year and, where available, screen size: TVs in the same product family can differ across generations, and one review cannot establish the performance of every art-oriented display.

Reviews of Samsung’s Frame illustrate why a product line should not be treated as a single picture-quality result. RTINGS found sub-par bright-room color saturation and a passable viewing angle on the reviewed 2024 Frame: RTINGS’ Samsung The Frame (2024) review. Its review of the 2026 Frame Pro reports excellent pre-calibration HDR accuracy along with some mapping errors, and notes the possibility of raised blacks in bright environments: RTINGS’ Samsung The Frame Pro review. These are findings for those specific reviewed generations and test methods, not guarantees about other sizes, models, or artwork.
Consumer-TV color measurements can help you compare displays, but they do not by themselves establish that a TV is suitable for professional color proofing. If matching a print or a color-managed production workflow is essential, do not assume that an art mode or a strong review makes the screen a reference display.

Decide whether a dedicated art mode is useful
An art mode can give a TV a picture-like idle presentation and controls separate from ordinary viewing settings. The features and behavior are model-specific, so confirm them for the exact television you are considering.
RTINGS’ guide to the 2021 Samsung Frame describes Art Mode controls for color and brightness, artwork collections and purchases, adding personal photos from a phone or USB drive, and sensor behavior that can turn the display off at night: RTINGS’ Samsung The Frame (2021) guide. Treat those details as historical information about the 2021 generation, not as a specification for current Frame models. The right setup depends on how the image looks in your room; there is no universally established brightness target for displaying art in the available sources.

There is no universally established screen-size formula for digital art. Consider the artwork’s intended scale, the distance and angle from which it will be viewed, available wall space, and whether the same screen will also serve as your everyday TV. Gaming specifications are secondary unless gaming is also a meaningful use.

| What to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Room and reflections | Will the screen face windows or lamps? How visible are direct reflections, diffuse glare, and lifted blacks in the room’s usual light? |
| Color | Are there independent results for the exact model and size? How does it handle dark tones and saturated colors? |
| Brightness | Does the image remain visible in the room when you expect to display art? Do not treat brightness as a substitute for reflection and color performance. |
| Art presentation | Does the model offer the idle display, independent controls, personal-image support, and sensor behavior you actually want? |
| Viewing and fit | Will the art be seen from the sides? Does the screen fit the wall and viewing distance, and is the mounting hardware compatible? |
| Other uses | Will the TV also meet your needs for regular video viewing, gaming, and smart-TV functions? |
Before wall-mounting, verify the selected TV’s mounting pattern, weight, and fit against the mount and installation location. Do not assume that a mount suitable for one TV will suit another.
Quick Recap
A practical selection process
- Map the display location. Note the main windows and lights, the room’s typical daytime brightness, likely viewing angles, and available wall space.
- Shortlist specific models. Include ordinary TVs as well as lifestyle models if their design or idle mode matters to you.
- Check model-specific evidence. Compare independent reflection, bright-room color, viewing-angle, and color-accuracy findings for the exact generation and size where possible.
- Verify art-mode details. Confirm that the desired controls, personal-image support, sensors, and services are available on that model in your region.
- Judge the whole setup. Consider how the screen will look with your room lighting, where viewers will sit, how you will mount it, and how often it will be used for video.
