Choose trimmer line by your weed eater’s exact model manual: match both the specified diameter and line shape, then confirm whether the head accepts bulk line or a compatible prewound spool. There is no universal size for electric trimmers. For example, the Craftsman CMEST900 specifies 0.065-inch round line, while the DeWalt DCST922 specifies 0.080-inch spiral-shaped line with smooth round edges.
1. Find your trimmer’s exact model and its line specification
Look for the model number on the tool’s label, then check the corresponding owner’s manual. Model variants and regional versions can differ, so use the manual for your specific trimmer rather than relying on a general recommendation or the size that fits another machine.

Check for three things in the manual: the permitted line diameter, the permitted shape or cross-section, and whether the head uses bulk line or a specific spool. The manuals for these examples show why all three matter:

2. Match both diameter and line shape
Do not treat thicker line as an automatic upgrade. On the Craftsman CMEST900, the manufacturer says: “Do not use serrated or larger diameter line or line with a shape other than round, as they will affect the way the line feeds and overload the motor and cause overheating.” That warning is specific to this model, but it shows why the manual’s limits matter.
Line shapes are not interchangeable by default. A manual may allow round, twisted, or spiral-shaped line in specified combinations—or restrict the trimmer to one type. For instance, Ryobi’s P20023 manual says, “Use only 0.065 in. diameter round or twisted or 0.080 in. diameter twisted line.” DeWalt’s DCST922 manual specifies spiral-shaped line with smooth round edges. Use another shape only if your model’s manual permits it.

The available manuals specify compatible line; they do not establish that one shape cuts better than another across electric trimmers. Don’t choose a shape based on a general performance claim when the tool maker has given a specific requirement.

First identify what your trimmer head accepts. A head designed for bulk line needs line loaded according to its manual; a prewound spool must match the trimmer and head. Similar-looking spools are not proof of compatibility. Check the replacement part or spool information in the manual before buying.

The Craftsman CMEST900 manual describes both bulk line and prewound spools and recommends factory-wound spools for best results on that model. Other models may have different loading methods or approved replacement spools. Ryobi’s manuals, for example, describe spool options and loading instructions tied to particular models.
If you are shopping for bulk line, a search such as “0.065-inch round trimmer line” is relevant only if your own manual specifies that diameter and shape. The Craftsman CMEST900 is one example that does. Otherwise, search by your model number and the specified line or compatible spool.

4. Replace line safely and avoid overfilling
- Isolate power first. Unplug a corded trimmer or remove the battery pack, as directed by its manual. Craftsman begins its replacement procedure by telling users to disconnect the plug; DeWalt directs users to remove the battery before replacing line.
- Follow the model’s loading steps. Use the specified line and align it with the head’s guides, slots, or eyelets as described in the manual. Ryobi’s P20102 instructions, for example, describe aligning the line and spool slots with the eyelet.
- Do not overfill the spool. Load only the amount and winding arrangement the manual specifies; overfilling can interfere with feeding.
- Use only approved components. Keep the guard and spool in place and avoid wire, rope, or unapproved attachments. DeWalt cautions that another manufacturer’s line can reduce performance, damage the trimmer, or cause injury.
