Start with the batteries you already own. If you have a compatible pack and charger from one of these brands, that platform may be the most practical choice—but confirm the exact battery family and trimmer model first. If you are buying into a new system, choose by yard workload, model features, kit contents, and local service access. No single brand is a proven winner for every yard: each sells multiple battery platforms and trimmer models, and the available specifications do not provide a fair, matched performance comparison.
This guide compares U.S. product information available in 2026. Product availability, prices, and warranty terms can differ by model and region.

Which battery weed eater is right for you?
For many buyers, the decision comes down to this sequence: battery compatibility first, workload second, and the exact trimmer and kit third. “Ryobi vs EGO vs Greenworks vs Stihl” is not a comparison of four equivalent tools. Each brand offers different models, battery families, and included equipment.
- Check your existing battery system. Confirm the precise platform and whether you need a bare tool or a kit with battery and charger.
- Match the trimmer to the work. Consider how much trimming you do, how dense the growth is, and whether you need edging or attachments.
- Compare the exact model and kit. Look at the cutting width, shaft and feed features, included battery capacity, charger, and price at the time you buy.
- Check warranty and service locally. Read the warranty for the exact model and region, and consider whether you can access authorized service.
How the four brands differ
| Brand | Battery systems and catalog examples | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| RYOBI | RYOBI’s U.S. catalog includes 18V ONE+ and 40V trimmers, with 40V standard, brushless, attachment-capable, tool-only, and kit options. See RYOBI’s trimmer and edger catalog. | Confirm whether the exact model is compatible with your existing pack, accepts the attachments you want, and includes a battery and charger if needed. |
| EGO | EGO’s U.S. POWER+ catalog lists 11 string trimmers, including 15- and 16-inch models, POWERLOAD and LINE IQ options, telescopic-shaft models, and combination kits. See EGO’s string-trimmer lineup. | Compare exact features and kit contents. Do not assume a catalog listing includes a battery and charger. |
| Greenworks | Greenworks presents 24V, 48V, and 60V lawn-and-garden systems. Its catalog describes 48V as two compatible 24V batteries working together; 60V is a separate system and its batteries are not compatible with 24V tools. A catalog example, the 24V ST3120, is a 12-inch brushless trimmer/edger with an auto-feed head. See Greenworks’ lawn-and-garden lineup. | Check which voltage system the tool uses and what comes in the package. Do not assume packs from different Greenworks voltage families interchange. |
| STIHL | STIHL USA describes the AS family for small tasks, AK for bigger jobs, and AP for demanding or professional use. See STIHL’s battery products. | Choose an exact trimmer and verify its compatible battery family; STIHL’s families are not one universal system. |
Choose by battery ownership and total cost
If you already own a compatible battery
Start with tools that use the exact battery family you have. That can avoid buying another pack and charger, but brand name alone is not enough to establish compatibility. RYOBI lists both 18V and 40V options, Greenworks separates its 60V and 24V systems, and STIHL describes multiple families. Verify the model’s compatibility and whether your existing battery is suitable for the job.

If you are starting from scratch
Compare complete kits rather than bare-tool prices. A kit may include a battery and charger; a tool-only listing generally requires you to provide compatible ones. Check the battery capacity included, because runtime claims apply to particular tool-and-battery combinations. If you expect to buy other yard tools later, consider which compatible products are actually available in your region.
Prices and offers change, so compare current listings for the exact tool, battery, and charger rather than relying on a brand-wide price impression.

Match the trimmer to your yard
For light, routine trimming
Look at the smaller or everyday-work options in the lineup and prioritize manageable handling, easy line feeding, and a battery system that fits the rest of your tools. Greenworks describes its 24V system as an everyday-work platform, and its ST3120 catalog entry combines trimming and edging with an auto-feed head. Those are model and platform descriptions, not proof that every Greenworks tool is best for a small yard.

Compare higher-tier tools and battery systems against the growth you actually need to cut. Greenworks offers a 60V trimmer, while STIHL positions its AP family for demanding or professional use. These descriptions help identify product tiers, but they do not establish which brand cuts faster or lasts longer in equivalent conditions.
Rank #3
- Long Runtime: Finish the job with up to 63 minutes* of runtime on this weed trimmer
- 52% more power** - Taking on trimming jobs with a powerful motor that slices through thick grass
- Large Trim Area: Tackle wide areas in a single pass with a 13 in. cutting swath
- Adjustable Height Weed Eater: Stay comfortable while working with an adjustable handle that can be customized to your preference
- Versatile Operation: Grass trimmer and edger using a single tool with Turn-To-Edge functionality
For edging or other attachments
Some models combine trimming and edging, while others are powerheads designed to accept attachments. RYOBI’s catalog includes attachment-capable models; Greenworks’ ST3120 is described as a trimmer/edger. Confirm the exact compatible attachments and whether they are included or sold separately. A feature on one model should not be assumed to apply across its brand’s lineup.
Runtime claims are not a cross-brand score
Greenworks says its particular 60V 16-inch brushless trimmer can run for up to 53 minutes on a 2.5Ah battery. That is the manufacturer’s claim for that product and battery combination, not an independent test or a universal result for Greenworks tools. Actual work time depends on the exact model, battery, vegetation, and use. The available product information does not provide matched runtime tests across all four brands, so “up to” figures from different listings should not be treated as a ranking.
Rank #4
- [Walkway Warrior Combo] - 40V trimmer + blaster system clears overgrown edges along driveways/walkways in half the time, boosting curb appeal instantly.
- [Defeat Thick Brush Invasion] - 12" commercial-grade trimmer (.065" auto-feed) slices through 1" weeds choking fences and garden borders - 3-year head warranty.

- [Universal 40V Power Hub] - 2.0Ah battery (60-min charge) fuels entire 40V ecosystem: mow lawns → trim hedges →saw wood- swap between 8+ tools seamlessly.

For your own yard, compare claims only when the trimmer, battery capacity, and test conditions are alike. If a listing does not make the conditions clear, use the number as a model-specific indication rather than a promise that one charge will cover a particular area.

- Cutting width: A wider path can cover more ground per pass, but compare it alongside the tool’s handling and your trimming conditions.
- Line-feed system: Greenworks lists an auto-feed head on the 24V ST3120. EGO offers POWERLOAD on selected models. Confirm the feature on the exact product listing.
- Line IQ: EGO lists LINE IQ models; check the individual model page for what the feature does and whether it fits your preferences.
- Shaft and balance: EGO’s lineup includes telescopic-shaft options. Try to assess comfort and balance if possible; the reviewed catalog information does not provide a matched set of tool weights.
- Attachments: Check the trimmer’s precise attachment compatibility, not just the brand or battery platform.
Do not infer comparable weight, cutting performance, noise, vibration, or durability from catalog categories. The available information does not establish a side-by-side test of equivalent models.

Warranty and service depend on the exact product and region
EGO’s U.S. FAQ states a five-year limited warranty for outdoor power equipment and a three-year limited warranty for POWER+ batteries and chargers purchased from authorized EGO retailers. Review the current terms and eligibility for the exact product and region at EGO’s FAQ. This policy should not be assumed to apply to other brands, other purchase channels, or products sold outside the United States. For RYOBI, Greenworks, and STIHL, check the current warranty page or model documentation for your market; equivalent terms are not established here.
Before buying, also consider where you can get authorized service and whether the seller is recognized under the manufacturer’s warranty terms. Those practical details can matter more than a small difference in listed features.
