Start with how you will use the tablet
Write down your main uses before comparing models. Reading and browsing may favor a lighter, more portable tablet; video, drawing or work can benefit from more display space. If you plan to keep large games, films or creative projects on the device, storage matters more than it does for someone who mostly streams.

Also list the apps and services you rely on. A tablet’s operating system determines which app store and compatible apps are available, so confirm that your essential apps work on the models you are considering. Platform, intended use, processor, memory and accessories are all useful comparison points, not just screen size and storage. Best Buy Canada’s 2023 buying handout identifies these as factors to consider.
What tablet size should you choose?
Screen size is measured diagonally. A larger display gives you more room for video, drawing or working with content, but can be less convenient to hold and carry. A compact tablet is easier to take along, though its smaller viewing area may feel limiting for tasks that benefit from more space.

Samsung UK’s tablet guide describes compact tablets as usually 5–8 inches and medium tablets as 8–11 inches. Those are broad categories, not a rule about what will fit you: handle the shortlisted models if possible, and consider their weight and overall dimensions as well as the diagonal measurement.
For streaming, gaming or drawing, Samsung recommends a resolution of at least 1920 × 1200. Treat that as the manufacturer’s guidance, not a universal minimum; compare the actual resolution and display of each candidate, and decide whether the extra detail is worthwhile for your viewing distance and tasks. The guide illustrates the range with 11-inch Galaxy Tab S11 and 14.6-inch Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra examples. Those examples do not establish a best size, and configurations can vary by model and market.

How much storage do you need?
Think about what will live on the tablet, not only what you will open on it. Streaming video and using a few lightweight apps can require less internal space than keeping films, music, photos, large games or creative files downloaded. Leave room for apps and files you may add later.

Samsung UK notes that some mobile games and creative apps can each exceed 1GB, and recommends that avid gamers consider at least 256GB or expandable storage. This is a vendor recommendation rather than a requirement for every gamer; check your current usage and the sizes of the apps and downloads you expect to keep. Age UK’s device guide also advises allowing more space if you store many films or music files locally.

Expandable storage can help only if the exact tablet has a card slot and supports the card capacity you intend to use. Samsung’s UK guide lists microSD support for the specific Galaxy models it covers and says the card is sold separately. Do not assume another model—or another brand—has a slot. Compare the internal storage and expansion support for the exact configuration, and check which types of files or apps can be stored on a card.
How should you compare battery life?
Battery capacity, shown in mAh, is not the same as hours of use. Capacity alone cannot tell you how long two different tablets will last: display settings, network use and workload affect runtime. Prefer independent tests that compare shortlisted tablets under matching conditions, or compare manufacturers’ runtime claims only when their test conditions are clear and similar.

Samsung’s UK guide says the average battery life of most tablets is around 3 to 10 hours, but it does not provide a controlled cross-brand test method for that estimate. Use it as Samsung’s broad guidance, not a dependable prediction for a particular device. Its examples list typical battery capacities of 8,400mAh for the Galaxy Tab S11 and 11,600mAh for the S11 Ultra; these figures do not guarantee a corresponding number of hours. Samsung explains that typical capacity is an estimated average and that rated minimum capacity is lower. The same guide says a 45W charger for supported fast charging is sold separately.
Should you get Wi-Fi or cellular?
A Wi-Fi-only tablet connects to the internet where a wireless network is available. If you occasionally need access elsewhere, you may be able to use your phone’s hotspot, as Samsung’s UK guide notes. A cellular model can connect to a mobile provider’s data service away from Wi-Fi, but the data plan is separate; Age UK’s guide likewise explains that cellular data is paid for separately.

Choose cellular if you regularly need a connection while travelling or away from reliable Wi-Fi and the extra plan cost makes sense. Before paying more for it, check local coverage, the available plan and whether the specific model supports the network configuration you need. A 5G label alone does not promise a particular speed: real performance depends on location, network, plan and conditions.
Check the exact model and configuration
Product families often include different storage, connectivity and accessory options. Before buying, verify the listing or manufacturer specifications for the precise model and market rather than relying on a family name or a review of a different variant.
- Operating system and apps: Confirm that your required apps and services are available and compatible.
- Display: Compare diagonal size, resolution and display type with your tasks and portability needs.
- Storage: Check internal capacity, whether a microSD slot is present, and the supported card capacity.
- Battery and charging: Read the stated runtime conditions, confirm charger support and check whether a suitable charger is included.
- Connectivity: Confirm whether the configuration is Wi-Fi-only or cellular, and check local network compatibility and plan costs.
- Accessories: Check whether a stylus or other needed accessory is included with that exact SKU; inclusion can differ by model and region.
For example, Samsung’s UK guide lists an S Pen with the cited S11 series, but that is not a reason to assume every tablet—or every regional configuration—includes a stylus. Verify what is in the box before comparing prices.

- Decide on mobile data. Weigh your need for internet away from Wi-Fi against coverage and the separate data-plan cost.
- Confirm the exact configuration. Check operating system, storage, connectivity, supported charging and included accessories for the SKU sold in your market.
