One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor many home repairs, a 3/8-inch-drive ratchet set is a practical starting point—but the right set depends on the fasteners you need to turn. Drive size determines which ratchet and sockets fit together; metric or SAE socket size identifies the fastener head. Check your hardware, then choose the drive, measurement system, socket depth and point style to match.
Understand drive size versus socket size
The ratchet’s drive is the square connection that fits into the socket. Common hand-tool drives are 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 inch. The socket’s size is a separate measurement of the fastener head: it may be marked in millimeters or fractional inches. Ratchet, socket and extension must use compatible drives. NAPA’s socket-set guide describes 3/8-inch drive as a useful single-drive choice for many commonly used sockets.

| Drive | When it may fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 1/4 inch | Smaller fasteners or tight access | Less suited to larger fasteners and higher torque |
| 3/8 inch | A versatile starting point for many common sockets | Check that its socket range covers your actual fasteners |
| 1/2 inch | Larger fasteners and greater torque | Bulkier than a smaller-drive setup |
These are selection guidelines, not a guarantee that a given drive or ratchet is suitable for every fastener. Match the tool to the repair and use appropriate force.
Choose metric, SAE or both
Metric sockets are marked in millimeters; SAE sockets are marked in fractional inches. The hardware you encounter is the deciding factor. NAPA notes that modern vehicles commonly use metric fasteners and older domestic vehicles often use SAE, and advises considering both systems when work spans them. For home repairs, inspect the relevant fasteners instead of assuming one system covers everything.

Before buying, check the set’s actual size list and look for skipped sizes. A set described as metric and SAE does not necessarily include every size in either system.
Pick socket features for the job
Six-point or twelve-point
A six-point socket contacts all six sides of a hex fastener. NAPA recommends six-point sockets for larger hardware or jobs involving serious torque. Twelve-point sockets can be easier to position when access or alignment is awkward. For demanding fasteners, six-point is a sensible default.

Shallow or deep
A shallow socket may bottom out against a long stud before it seats on the nut. A deep-well socket gives the stud or bolt room to extend inside the socket. Choose deep sockets in the matching drive when the fastener’s shape or position requires that clearance.

Hand-use or impact-rated
If you use a pneumatic or electric impact wrench, choose sockets specifically designed for impact tools. Ordinary chrome sockets intended for hand ratchets are not the right substitute for impact-rated sockets. A hand-ratchet set and an impact-socket set serve different uses.

- PRECISION PERFORMANCE - Help prevent rounding of fasteners with sockets featuring DirectTorque Technology.
- MAXIMIZE COMFORT - Work comfortably on long days with a durable anti-slip vinyl grip bit driver.
- STRONG GRIP - Get a grip with a knurled ring that offers control in tough applications.
- WORK IN TIGHT SPACES 72-tooth count rachets provide a 5 degree arc swing for optimal control.

Extensions add reach
An extension connects between a ratchet and socket to reach a recessed fastener; it does not change socket size. Match the extension’s drive to the ratchet and socket. For example, Milwaukee lists a 3-inch extension in its 3/8-inch set below.
Compare the set’s coverage, not just its piece count
Use this checklist to assess a set against the repairs you expect to do:

Quick Recap
Make the choice by matching tools to your repairs
- Identify the fasteners you expect to work on and note whether their sizes are metric, SAE or mixed.
- Choose a compatible drive: consider 3/8 inch as a versatile starting point, 1/4 inch for smaller fasteners or tight access, and 1/2 inch for larger fasteners or greater torque.
- Check the set’s size list for the fasteners you identified, rather than relying on its piece count or label.
- Add the socket style your work needs: six-point for a demanding fastener, deep-well where a stud prevents a shallow socket from seating, or impact-rated sockets if you use an impact wrench.
- Confirm that any extensions and sockets match your ratchet’s drive and that the case keeps the included sizes identifiable.
