How to Choose the Right Raspberry Pi Model for Your Project and Budget

Choose the board class first: Pi computers run Linux, Pico is for microcontroller projects, and Compute Modules suit custom embedded designs. Then compare performance, ports and the full build cost.

Start by choosing the right kind of board: use a Raspberry Pi computer if your project needs Linux, a Raspberry Pi Pico if it needs firmware and direct hardware control, and a Compute Module if you are building an embedded product around a custom carrier board. For Linux projects, Pi 5 favors performance and newer I/O; Pi 4 can be a better-value fit when its capabilities are sufficient; Zero 2 W is for compact, lower-power builds with modest needs.

Choose a board class before a model

“Raspberry Pi” covers different kinds of hardware, not just faster and slower versions of one computer. Make the first choice based on what the project must run.

Board class Choose it when Important distinction
Raspberry Pi computers, including Pi 5, Pi 4 and Zero 2 W You need Linux, conventional applications, or a small general-purpose computer. Models differ in performance, connectors, size and power needs. Raspberry Pi computer documentation
Raspberry Pi Pico family You need a microcontroller to run a program and control hardware. Pico does not run Linux or boot from removable storage; it is not a low-cost substitute for a Linux computer. Pico documentation
Compute Module You are designing an embedded product with a custom carrier or baseboard. The module is a minimal embedded format and needs a carrier board; it is not a ready-to-use desktop-style board. Compute Module documentation

For Linux, compare Pi 5, Pi 4 and Zero 2 W

These are not interchangeable on every project. Compare the workload, memory, connections and physical constraints together rather than treating a higher specification as automatic value.

Model What the official specifications show Good fit when Watch for
Raspberry Pi 5 2.4GHz quad-core 64-bit Arm Cortex-A76; LPDDR4X-4267 options from 1GB to 16GB; two USB 3 and two USB 2 ports; Gigabit Ethernet; dual-band Wi-Fi; Bluetooth 5; dual 4Kp60 HDMI output; PCIe 2.0 x1 (adapter or HAT required); standard 40-pin header. Official Pi 5 specifications Your software or peripherals benefit from more performance, newer I/O or PCIe expansion. Official guidance recommends 5V/5A. With a 5V/3A supply, USB peripheral current is limited to 600mA. Active cooling helps it perform best under load. Confirm the selected RAM tier, power and cooling in the full build.
Raspberry Pi 4 Model B 1.8GHz quad-core Cortex-A72; official page lists 1GB, 2GB, 3GB, 4GB and 8GB RAM variants depending on model or revision; two USB 3 and two USB 2 ports; Gigabit Ethernet; Wi-Fi 5; Bluetooth 5; dual micro-HDMI; standard 40-pin header. Minimum power supply: USB-C, 5V/3A. Official Pi 4 specifications Its compute and connections meet the requirements and the complete build costs less than an adequate Pi 5 build. Check the exact memory revision and required connectors. A suitable board price alone does not establish the cost advantage.
Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W A compact Linux computer in the Zero family. Raspberry Pi documentation gives a typical bare-board active draw of 350mA; the figure is not a whole-system power budget. Uses mini-HDMI and micro-USB connectors. Zero documentation Small size and lower power matter more than plentiful ports or performance headroom. Fewer ports and less headroom may constrain peripherals or require adapters. Include those, cables and power in the build comparison.

Pi 4 versus Pi 5 is the main choice when a project needs a conventional Raspberry Pi Linux computer. Prefer Pi 5 when its additional performance or PCIe and other newer I/O address a real requirement. Consider Pi 4 when its compute and ports are enough and the whole build is cheaper. Choose Zero 2 W when the project genuinely fits its compact, low-power design. These recommendations follow the published features, not comparative hands-on benchmarks.

Choose a Pico variant for firmware and hardware control

Pico boards run a program stored in on-board memory and expose microcontroller features such as GPIO, PWM and programmable I/O. The original Pico uses RP2040 with 264KB SRAM and 2MB flash; Pico 2 is a newer generation using RP2350 with 520KB RAM and 4MB flash. Wireless variants add connectivity: Pico W and WH provide 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.2, as do the corresponding Pico 2 W wireless options listed in the official materials. The Pico 2 catalog starting price was $5 when accessed on 2026-10-04; that is a catalog board price, not a full project cost. Official Pico specifications Pico 2 product page

For a Pico project, match the revision and header configuration to the job: 26 multifunction GPIO and three ADC inputs are among the listed features, while header variants affect whether soldering is needed. If the program requires Linux applications, a desktop environment or a conventional server stack, choose a Raspberry Pi computer instead.

  • Software and memory: Identify whether the workload needs Linux, then choose a RAM tier appropriate to its applications. Compare actual model variants rather than assuming every board in a family has the same memory.
  • USB and network: Count devices and check whether USB 3 or wired Gigabit Ethernet is required. Pi 4 and Pi 5 each list two USB 3 and two USB 2 ports and Gigabit Ethernet.
  • Display and camera: Pi 4 and Pi 5 use dual micro-HDMI display connectors; Zero uses mini-HDMI. Pi 5 camera/display connectors are 22-pin, so verify cable compatibility with the exact board and peripheral. Raspberry Pi display documentation
  • GPIO and add-ons: Pi 4 and Pi 5 have a standard 40-pin header. Check the exact board, HAT or sensor compatibility rather than inferring it from the Raspberry Pi name.
  • Storage and expansion: Linux setup needs boot media. Pi 5 offers PCIe 2.0 x1, but an adapter or HAT is required; do not assume an SSD connects directly to the board.
  • Space, power and cooling: Compare board dimensions and connector clearance with the enclosure. Account for supply capacity, attached USB devices and cooling under the expected workload.

Budget for the working build, not just the board

A Linux board needs an operating-system image on boot media. Raspberry Pi setup guidance recommends at least an 8GB card for Raspberry Pi OS Lite. Include a correctly rated supply, storage, enclosure and any cooling, display cable, adapters, HATs or sensors required by the project. The right total varies with what the build already has and what it must connect. Raspberry Pi getting-started guidance

A practical selection process

  1. Decide whether the project needs Linux. If it needs a general-purpose operating system, compare Pi 5, Pi 4 and Zero 2 W. If it runs firmware and controls hardware, compare Pico variants. For a custom embedded product requiring a module and carrier, consider a Compute Module.
  2. List non-negotiable requirements. Record software and memory needs, USB speed and count, Ethernet, display or camera connection, GPIO/HAT compatibility, wireless, storage or PCIe expansion, physical size and power constraints.
  3. Choose sufficient performance, not the highest specification by default. Favor Pi 5 when its performance or newer I/O is needed; consider Pi 4 if it meets the requirements and reduces the complete build cost; use Zero 2 W only if its port and headroom limits suit the project.
  4. Price every necessary part. Add power, boot storage, case and cooling, cables, adapters and project-specific add-ons to the board price. Check current regional pricing, especially for the 2GB Pi 4 and Pi 5 after the October 2026 update.
  5. Verify the exact revision and connector before ordering. Confirm memory, header configuration and cable fit against the board and attached hardware; display connector size differs between Zero and Pi 4/5.
