A PDF can contain raster images, so its extension alone does not guarantee sharp scaling. If the printer requires a bitmap, use a PNG exported at the final printed size and its requested resolution. In every case, preserve the QR code’s four-module quiet zone and test a physical proof.
Choose a format that fits the print handoff
The best format depends on what the printer accepts and whether the QR code must resize. SVG is usually the simplest choice for a standalone code: it represents the artwork as shapes rather than a fixed grid of pixels, so it can render at the output device’s resolution. EPS is another vector format, but use it only when the print provider specifically requests it and confirms its current software supports it.

PDF is a document container, not a guarantee about the contents. It can preserve vector QR artwork, but it can also contain a raster image. If a printer requests PDF, place the code in the page layout and verify that the QR artwork remains vector before sending it.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

|---|---|---|
| SVG | Scalable standalone QR artwork | Confirm the printer or design workflow accepts SVG. |
| Page-ready delivery when requested by the printer | Check that the QR artwork inside is vector; PDF can also contain raster content. | |
| EPS | Vendor-specific or legacy vector workflows | Ask whether the printer’s current software accepts it. |
| PNG | Fixed-size bitmap workflows and broad compatibility | Export at the final printed size and the printer’s requested resolution; do not enlarge it afterward. |
| JPEG | Generally avoid for QR module artwork | Lossy compression can soften or add artifacts around sharp module edges. This is a production caution, not a claim based on a controlled JPEG-versus-PNG benchmark. |
Use PNG only when the bitmap is large enough
A PNG has a fixed pixel grid. Export it to match the intended physical dimensions rather than exporting small and enlarging it in a layout. Use the resolution specified by the print provider. UseQR recommends 300 DPI at final size in its guide, last reviewed 2026-08-21; treat that as practical production guidance, not a universal QR standard threshold or a guarantee that a print will scan.

If the provider has no resolution specification, ask before finalizing the file. Resolution by itself cannot account for the code’s density, print process, material, contrast, scan distance, lighting or phone camera.
Keep the quiet zone clear
The quiet zone is the blank margin around the QR symbol that helps scanners distinguish it from nearby content. DENSO WAVE’s official technical guidance specifies a clear margin four modules wide on every side. A module is one of the small square units that form the code, so the margin is measured relative to the symbol—not as a fixed number of millimetres.

Keep text, borders, logos, bleed and trim away from that margin. DENSO WAVE illustrates the geometry with a Version 3 symbol: 29 modules at 0.254 mm per module make a 7.366 mm symbol; adding four modules of margin on each side brings the total width to 9.398 mm. That is an example using a particular module size, not a universal minimum print size.
Size the code for its real use
There is no single physical size that guarantees every QR code will scan. Denser codes, the distance from which someone scans, the print process, stock or surface, contrast, lighting and the device all affect results. Use any sizing guidance as a starting point, then test the actual printed piece at its intended distance.

Maintain clear dark-on-light contrast and keep the square modules undistorted. Do not rely on a larger code to compensate for a missing quiet zone or poor print quality. Error correction is a separate design trade-off: DENSO WAVE says that increasing correction improves recovery capability but also increases the amount of data and code size. Its guidance identifies Level M (15%) as the most frequently selected level; that is DENSO WAVE’s published guidance, not a market-use survey.
Proof the file before approving a print run
- Ask the print provider which formats and PDF specifications it accepts. Send SVG for a standalone vector code if accepted; use PDF for a page-ready submission when requested, and verify the QR artwork inside it is vector.
- If raster is mandatory, export a PNG at the final physical dimensions and the printer’s requested resolution. Do not scale it up after export.
- Check the layout at actual size: the four-module blank margin must remain intact, the modules should remain square, and nearby text or artwork should not crowd the code.
- Print a proof at 100% on the intended material. Scan it from the real intended distance, in plausible lighting, with more than one phone.
- Confirm that the decoded destination is correct before approving the full run.
What the QR standard does—and does not—settle
ISO/IEC 18004:2024, Edition 4, published in August 2024, specifies the QR Code symbology and covers symbol characteristics, encoding methods, dimensional characteristics, error-correction rules, a reference decoding algorithm, production quality requirements and selectable application parameters. The public ISO catalog described the edition as published and in stage 90.92 (“to be revised”) in its 2026-02-25 review entry. This scope does not establish that every printer accepts a particular file format or that any one physical size will work for every job.
