Choose a pressure washer for the surfaces you need to clean, not the highest PSI on the box. For light, recurring household jobs, a corded electric model is a practical starting point; larger areas and tougher buildup may justify a gas model if you are willing to handle its extra noise, weight and engine maintenance. Then check flow, nozzle options, reach, storage and upkeep—and make sure the machine and technique suit each surface.
Start with the jobs and surfaces
List the surfaces you expect to clean and roughly how much area each covers: patio furniture, a small patio, a deck, siding or a driveway, for example. Those jobs do not call for the same pressure or technique. A washer that can clean concrete may be too aggressive for wood, siding or a vehicle.

Consumer Reports’ surface-by-surface guide advises using low pressure and a broad spray on aluminum siding, which can dent, and lower pressure on soft wood. It also cautions that pressure-washing a car can do more harm than good. Check guidance for your specific material before settling on a machine or technique.
Choose a power source that fits the workload
| Type | Better fit | Trade-offs to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Corded electric | Light household cleaning and recurring jobs near a suitable power outlet. | The cord limits where you can work; there is no gas engine to maintain. |
| Gas | Larger areas or tougher buildup where faster cleaning may matter. | More noise and weight, plus fuel, starting, engine upkeep and storage to manage. |
| Battery-powered | A category worth comparing when cordless operation matters. | The available guidance does not establish a universally best battery option over corded electric. |
These are category-level trade-offs, not a recommendation of a specific current model. Consumer Reports covers electric, gas and battery-powered washers in its buying guide.

Compare pressure and water flow for the task
PSI describes water pressure; GPM describes water flow. Consider both alongside the spray pattern and the surface you plan to clean. A high maximum PSI alone does not tell you whether a washer is a good match for a household job.
As concrete-specific guidance—not a universal setting—Consumer Reports says a machine capable of at least 1,500 PSI can clean concrete, while around 2,500–3,000 PSI can make the work go faster. Do not carry those figures over to a deck, siding, vehicle or other material; use the material-specific guidance and the washer manual instead.

Check the nozzles and safety features
Nozzle choice changes how concentrated the spray is. Wider patterns distribute force over a broader area; a pinpoint stream concentrates it. Consumer Reports advises removing a supplied zero-degree nozzle or avoiding the equivalent pinpoint setting on an adjustable nozzle. Prefer useful wider-angle options, start with the lowest suitable setting and follow surface-specific instructions.

Check reach, handling and storage
A washer that cannot comfortably reach the work may be frustrating to use. Before buying, check:
- Pressure-hose length and, on a corded electric model, power-cord length. Consumer Reports says longer hoses and cords improve mobility and ideally should each be at least 30 feet; this is a buying-guide recommendation, not a requirement for every property.
- Wheels, weight and how easily you can move the unit across your work area.
- Where the washer, hose, cord and accessories will be stored.
- Whether you need a detergent system, and whether the included nozzles give you appropriate spray options.
Verify the exact model’s working specifications, included accessories, warranty and manual. Do not rely only on a maximum advertised PSI or a combined “cleaning units” figure.

Decide whether to buy or rent
Buying avoids arranging a rental each time, but it brings storage and maintenance responsibilities. Consumer Reports’ buying guide says its experts consider ownership a money saver for people who use a washer three or more times per year, provided they maintain it. Treat that as a rule of thumb, not a guaranteed break-even point: purchase and rental costs vary.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor an infrequent job, renting may be a better fit, especially if you do not want to store or maintain a machine. Renting can also be worth considering if you need a hot-water unit intended for professional use.

Plan for water supply, detergent and maintenance
Follow the operating and maintenance manual for the exact washer. Depending on the model, upkeep may include checking screens, changing oil or spark plugs on applicable gas models, flushing detergent residue, clearing nozzle blockages and draining water before storage in freezing conditions. Pump-saver treatment may be optional; check the manual rather than assuming every procedure applies.
Simpson Cleaning says to use detergents that their chemical manufacturer identifies as designed and safe for pressure washers. Its FAQ also specifies a minimum cold-water supply of 5 GPM and 20 PSI for Simpson equipment. Those are Simpson’s stated requirements, not general specifications for all pressure washers; check your own machine’s manual and supply requirements.
Quick Recap
A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Have you matched the washer to the actual surfaces and area you intend to clean?
- Does the power source suit your workload, access to power, noise tolerance and maintenance preferences?
- Have you considered both pressure and flow rather than choosing by maximum PSI alone?
- Does the nozzle setup offer suitable wider patterns without relying on a pinpoint stream?
- Are the hose and cord long enough for your layout, and can you move and store the unit?
- Are you prepared to follow the model-specific water, detergent and maintenance requirements?
- Will you use the washer often enough to justify ownership over renting?
