The right precision bit is the one that matches the screw’s drive shape and fills its recess completely. Identify the profile first—such as Phillips, JIS, Torx, pentalobe, tri-point, slotted or hex—then select the size that seats fully without rocking. A near-match can slip, damage the fastener and make the repair harder, so stop and reassess whenever the bit does not fit cleanly.
Why bit choice matters in electronics repair
Small electronic devices use tiny screws with several different drive families. A phone, game controller, camera, laptop or appliance may contain more than one profile, and the screws can be recessed, shallow or difficult to see. The driver handle may feel secure in your hand while the tip is damaging the fastener, so a familiar-looking cross or star is not enough evidence that it is correct.

Using the correct bit protects both parts of the job. The bit transfers turning force into the recess instead of climbing out of it. That reduces slipping, preserves the screw head for reassembly and lowers the chance of scratching nearby plastic, glass or circuit boards. It also protects the bit: forcing an incorrect profile can round its edges or deform the tip.

Use this order: shape first, size second
1. Identify the drive family
Look down into the screw head rather than relying on its outline from the side. A Phillips recess has a cross shape. JIS also resembles a cross, but its geometry differs and the two are not automatically interchangeable. Torx has a six-point star, pentalobe has five rounded lobes, tri-point has three wings, slotted has one straight groove, and hex has six flat-sided internal surfaces. Other profiles, including tri-wing and Pozidriv, may also appear in electronics repair kits.
These profiles are distinct. A flathead bit may enter part of a cross recess, and a Phillips bit may appear to engage a JIS screw, but partial contact concentrates force on a few edges. That is exactly the situation that causes a slip or stripped head. Choose the matching family instead of adapting a “close enough” tip.
2. Select the size that fills the recess
Once the family is known, compare sizes within that family. The fit rule from iFixit is simple: “Choose the bit size that fills the screw head entirely.” The bit should reach the working surfaces at the bottom and sidewalls of the recess without visible gaps. It should not bottom out on a central feature, bind before entering fully or wobble when you hold the driver upright.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A bit that is too small contacts only the inner edges and can cam out under modest torque. One that is too large may enter only partway, damage the recess or fail to turn the screw at all. In both cases, more hand pressure makes the outcome worse; it does not correct a mismatch.
How to identify an unknown screw safely
- Consult the repair instructions. Check the device manufacturer’s service documentation or a reputable device-specific repair guide for the drive family and size. Record each screw type if the guide lists more than one.
- Clean and illuminate the head. Remove dust or adhesive that hides the recess. Use a bright, angled light and magnification when the screw is very small. Do not scrape aggressively against a nearby board or flex cable.
- Compare profiles, not just labels. A six-point star, five-lobed recess and three-wing recess require different bits even if their overall diameter looks similar. Treat Phillips and JIS as separate candidates, particularly at the small sizes where their differences are most consequential.
- Start with the likely size. Insert the bit straight down with no turning force. It should enter completely and sit squarely. If it stops high, rocks or leaves obvious empty space, remove it and try another size or profile.
- Perform a gentle seating test. With the bit fully inserted, apply light downward pressure and rotate only a few degrees. A correctly seated bit feels engaged rather than springy or slippery. Stop immediately if it climbs out.
- Mark the result. For a device with several screw groups, note the profile and size for each location. Keeping that record prevents mixing fasteners during reassembly.
Never identify a bit by forcing it until the screw turns. If the head has already begun to deform, continuing with the same candidate can remove the remaining edges that a correct bit would need.

Precision bit families you may encounter
The following families are established examples in electronics repair guidance and micro-bit assortments. Their presence in a kit does not mean every device uses them, and the names do not replace a fit check.
| Drive family | Recess characteristic | Selection caution |
|---|---|---|
| Phillips | Four-armed cross | Choose the size that fills the cross completely; a too-small tip slips easily. |
| JIS | Cross-shaped profile with different geometry from Phillips | Do not assume a Phillips bit is interchangeable. The distinction is especially notable at size 0 and below. |
| Torx | Six-point star | Use a Torx bit that seats on all points rather than a different star-like profile. |
| Pentalobe | Five rounded lobes | Match the pentalobe size; a Torx or other multi-point bit is not a substitute. |
| Tri-point | Three-lobed or three-wing recess | Use the corresponding tri-point bit and keep it aligned because the contact area is limited. |
| Tri-wing | Three-wing drive family listed in electronics repair references | Confirm the exact profile before applying torque; “three-wing” descriptions can be confused with other three-lobed designs. |
| Slotted (flathead) | Single straight slot | The blade must fit the slot width and depth. Do not use it as a substitute for a cross or star drive. |
| Hex | Six flat-sided internal socket | Use the matching hex size so the flats, not just the corners, carry the load. |
| Pozidriv | Cross-family profile identified separately from Phillips | Use a Pozidriv bit when specified; a visually similar Phillips tip can damage the recess. |
Phillips versus JIS: the cross-head trap
Phillips and JIS are the most common source of false confidence because both look like a simple cross at a glance. Their geometry and intended engagement differ. iFixit’s reference specifically cautions that the bits are not always interchangeable and highlights the difference at size 0 and below, where tiny dimensional changes matter more.

If the guide does not identify the standard, examine how the candidate seats before turning it. A bit that fits the outline but leaves play, rides high or slips with light pressure is not a safe match. Do not “solve” uncertainty by pressing harder; switch to the other cross-head family or verify the specification.
Choosing a precision bit kit
A kit is an assortment, not a compatibility guarantee. A 64-bit assortment described by iFixit EDU includes Phillips, Torx, flathead and additional types. Wiha’s micro-bit catalogs list combinations that can include Phillips, Torx, pentalobe, slotted, hex and other profiles. Those examples show why a kit should be judged by its actual contents rather than its bit count.
Check the drive coverage
List the profiles you expect to encounter and compare them with the kit’s contents. If your work includes JIS, tri-point or pentalobe screws, confirm that those names appear explicitly; do not assume they are hidden under a generic “precision” label.

Check the small sizes
Within a family, the smallest sizes are often the deciding factor. Read the manufacturer’s size list and compare it with the service guide or the screws you can inspect. A kit with many larger bits may still be unsuitable if it lacks the required micro sizes.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Check the handle interface and replacements
Interchangeable systems commonly use a defined bit interface. Before buying replacements, verify both the drive size and the interface accepted by your handle. iFixit identifies replacement precision 4 mm bits for named compatible toolkits; that compatibility is specific to the listed system, not a universal promise for every precision handle.
Check the handle and case for your work
A comfortable, controlled handle helps you keep the bit aligned, especially on recessed screws. A case that identifies profiles and sizes reduces the chance of losing a tiny bit or returning it to the wrong slot. These are workflow considerations, not evidence that one assortment is inherently more durable than another: the cited guidance and catalogs do not provide independent durability rankings.
- Confirm every drive family you actually need.
- Confirm the exact small sizes, not just the number of pieces.
- Confirm replacement availability for your handle interface.
- Choose storage that keeps sizes legible and bits organized.
- Ignore a high piece count if it does not cover the fasteners in your devices.
A controlled technique for removing and reinstalling tiny screws
Before turning
- Disconnect power and remove the battery when the device instructions require it.
- Place the device on a stable, non-slip surface with room for sorted screws.
- Seat the bit vertically. Keep your wrist and the driver axis in line with the screw.
- Use a handle that lets you apply modest, controlled pressure rather than squeezing a bare shaft.
While loosening
- Press the bit into the recess with enough force to maintain full contact, not enough to flex the device shell.
- Turn slowly and smoothly. If the bit slips, stop and inspect the head for damage.
- If the screw is tight, verify the profile and size again before increasing force. A correct fit should not require the bit to rock or scrape.
- Keep removed screws grouped by location. Different lengths or heads may look similar but belong in different holes.
While tightening
Start the screw by hand with the bit aligned and turn only until it is seated. Avoid excessive torque on plastic posts or small threaded inserts. If the screw does not start smoothly, back it out and check for cross-threading or the wrong fastener rather than forcing it.
Do not misuse the driver
iFixit’s screwdriver best-practice guidance warns against prying or chiseling with a screwdriver. Those actions can bend, break or deform the tip, after which it may slip in the screw. Use a purpose-made opening tool for clips, adhesive or prying, and reserve the precision driver for turning fasteners.

Troubleshooting a bit that will not work
The bit will not enter fully
Check for debris, thread-locking material or a screw head that is already damaged. If the recess is clean, try the next size within the same family, then reconsider whether the profile is actually Phillips, JIS, Torx, pentalobe, tri-point, slotted or hex. Do not push until the bit bottoms out by force.
The bit enters but rocks
Rocking means the contact surfaces are not supporting the bit evenly. The size may be too small, or the family may be wrong. Remove it, compare another candidate and repeat the gentle seating test. Continuing to turn a rocking bit is a common way to round a tiny recess.
The screw head is beginning to strip
Stop as soon as the bit slips. Inspect the recess under magnification and choose the exact matching profile and size. Keep the driver straight, clean the recess and use controlled downward pressure. If the head is already severely damaged, ordinary bit selection may no longer be enough; follow a device-specific stripped-screw procedure rather than improvising with a larger or unrelated bit.
The correct profile is not in your kit
Do not substitute a flathead, a different cross standard or a similar multi-point bit merely because it is available. Obtain the missing profile or a compatible replacement bit. The time saved by forcing an incorrect tool is usually lost if the screw must later be extracted.
The bit itself is damaged
Look for a rounded tip, bent blade, chipped point or visible deformation. Retire a damaged bit from precision work; its altered geometry can slip even when the nominal size is correct. Replace it with a bit that matches the handle interface and the required drive size.

When replacing individual bits makes sense
Replacing one worn bit can be more practical than discarding an entire handle system, provided the replacement is made for that system. Confirm the 4 mm or other stated bit interface, the drive family and the size before ordering. A replacement catalog entry establishes compatibility only for the named toolkit or handle family; it does not make every precision bit interchangeable.
Keep spare bits organized by family and size. Mixing similar-looking Phillips and JIS tips, or placing two adjacent Torx sizes in the same compartment, defeats the purpose of a carefully selected kit. Labeling the storage slots is useful when several people share the tools.
A quick decision framework
Use this sequence whenever you face an unfamiliar small-electronics screw:
- Documentation: Does the device guide name the profile and size? Use that specification.
- Shape: Which recess is visible—cross, JIS-style cross, six-point star, five lobes, three lobes, one slot, six-sided socket or another profile?
- Size: Which candidate fills the recess entirely without rocking?
- Seat: Does the bit enter fully and remain stable under light hand pressure?
- Technique: Can you keep the driver aligned while turning slowly, without using it as a pry tool?
- Stop condition: If any answer is uncertain, do not apply more force. Recheck the profile, consult the device-specific guide or obtain the missing bit.
What a good purchase decision looks like
For occasional repairs, prioritize the profiles and sizes required by the devices you actually service. A smaller assortment with the correct bits is more useful than a large assortment that omits the critical family. For varied electronics work, a broader kit can reduce interruptions, but judge it by its printed contents, size range, handle interface and storage rather than by bit count alone.
There is no evidence here that one brand, kit or bit coating is universally best, and the available catalogs do not provide independent comparative durability tests. The reliable standard is functional: the bit must match the drive, fill the recess, remain aligned and be replaceable when worn. That standard prevents the most expensive mistake in precision work—turning a simple screw removal into a damaged fastener and a more complex repair.
