Measure the distance from your usual eye position to the spot where the screen will sit, then use that distance to shortlist TV sizes—not to dictate a single “correct” answer. For a 4K OLED, sitting relatively close can still deliver a clear image; comfort, immersion, seating, physical fit and budget decide which size works best.
How do you find the right TV size?
- Measure your viewing distance. Measure from your eyes in your normal seat to the planned screen plane, in inches or metres. If people regularly watch from different seats, measure the closest and farthest positions too.
- Use a sizing guide as a starting point. The formulas below use different assumptions, so treat them as reference points rather than precise, interchangeable standards.
- Shortlist nearby screen diagonals. Compare the sizes available around your result, including the next size up and down. For reference, Samsung Canada lists recommended 4K viewing distances of 1.4 m for 55 inches, 1.7 m for 65 inches, 1.9 m for 75 inches, 2.0 m for 77 inches and 2.1 m for 83 inches. - Check the actual TV’s dimensions and installation. Confirm screen width and height, stand footprint, wall or console width and clearance. Diagonal size alone does not tell you whether a particular model will fit.
- Choose between the finalists by comfort and use. Consider how much of your view the screen fills, whether subtitles and fast action are comfortable to follow, how it looks from other seats, and whether the larger size is worth the extra cost.
Which viewing-distance formula should you use?
TV makers publish different rules of thumb, not one universal sizing standard. Each can help you create a shortlist, but the result depends on what the formula measures and how immersive a view you prefer.

LG’s 40-degree viewing-angle guideline
LG USA suggests dividing viewing distance in inches by 1.2 to estimate a diagonal screen size for a 40-degree viewing angle. For example, at 96 inches away, the calculation gives 80 inches. Treat that as a starting reference—not a required minimum or a promise that every viewer will prefer that size. LG’s TV size guide
Sony’s 4K minimum-distance reference
Sony USA says the recommended distance for watching a 4K TV is 1.5 times the screen’s vertical height. Sony describes its distance figures as minimum references and advises adjusting for preference and room layout. This method is based on screen height, unlike LG’s diagonal-size calculation. Samsung’s 4K size-and-distance examples
Samsung Canada provides size-specific recommended 4K viewing distances, including 1.7 m for a 65-inch TV and 2.0 m for a 77-inch TV. The guide also explains that higher resolution can let you sit closer or choose a larger screen at the same distance. Sony’s height-to-distance rule of thumb
Sony Electronics gives a broader guideline: TV height should be about two-thirds of the distance between the screen and viewing position. It also recommends considering the content you expect to watch. This is another way to think about scale, not a universal formula that overrides comfort or room fit. Does 4K change how close you can sit?
It can. Samsung says higher resolution lets viewers sit closer or choose a larger screen at the same distance, while Sony’s 4K guidance uses a minimum distance based on screen height. That makes a compact room less likely to force you into a small screen simply because of image clarity. These guides do not establish one distance that will feel comfortable for everyone: your preference and the room’s seating arrangement still matter.

Check the exact model’s dimensions before buying. Samsung Canada’s table lists a 65-inch TV at 1,440 × 831 mm and a 77-inch TV at 1,720 × 990 mm; those figures are examples from its guide, not dimensions for every OLED. Case design and stand geometry vary, so verify the manufacturer’s specifications for your chosen set.

- Measure the usable width and height of the wall or furniture, including any space needed around the TV.
- Check the stand’s footprint and the console’s usable surface, not just its overall width.
- Consider whether viewers at the sides of the room will have a comfortable view.
- For multiple regular seats, make sure the closest viewer is comfortable with the screen’s scale and the farthest viewer can still enjoy it.
Samsung’s guidance also emphasizes room layout and use alongside distance. A room’s label—such as “small living room” or “bedroom”—is less useful than the actual viewing positions, installation space and habits. Samsung Canada’s size guide

A larger screen can make films, sports and games feel more immersive. For casual viewing or a bedroom setup, a smaller screen may suit the space and viewing habits better. These are preference-led choices, not fixed room-size rules: Samsung and Sony both advise taking use or intended content into account. If two adjacent sizes both fit your distance and installation space, compare how filling each feels from your seat, whether the larger screen is comfortable for your usual content, and whether the difference in cost matters to you.
