Choose the bundle only if you want the game and its current price compares favorably with buying the console and game separately. The console is usable as shipped: it includes Joy-Con 2 controllers, a dock, cables, an AC adapter, and basic controller accessories. Add-ons are for specific needs such as more game storage, travel protection, or another controller.
Standard system or Mario Kart World bundle?
Nintendo lists a standard Switch 2 system and a Switch 2 + Mario Kart World bundle in its U.S. store. The bundle includes the console and a full download of the game. Prices, stock, and savings can change, and the U.S. launch MSRPs—$449.99 for the system and $499.99 for the bundle—are historical figures from April 18, 2025, not current price quotes. Compare the live prices in your region before deciding.

The standard package includes the console, Joy-Con 2 controllers, Joy-Con 2 grip and straps, dock, AC adapter, USB-C charging cable, and Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable. You do not need to buy a dock, basic controller, or power adapter just to start playing.
What the Switch 2 offers
Switch 2 supports handheld, tabletop, and TV play. Its built-in 7.9-inch LCD has 1920 × 1080 resolution, HDR support, variable refresh rate (VRR) up to 120 Hz, and a maximum of 120 fps in supported games. In TV mode, the dock supports up to 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps; supported games and displays can also use 1080p or 1440p output at up to 120 fps. These are capability limits, not guarantees for every game or screen: resolution, HDR, VRR, and frame rate depend on the software and compatible display. The system has 256 GB of internal storage, some of which is reserved for system use. Compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games can work on Switch 2, but Nintendo cautions that some titles may not be supported or fully compatible. If a particular older game is essential to your decision, check Nintendo’s transfer guide and compatibility guidance for that title before buying. Switch 2 also has its own software and features, so the upgrade decision depends partly on whether its newer library and controls appeal to you.
Which accessories are worth adding?
Start with the need, not the accessory list. The included equipment covers ordinary play; buy extras only when they solve a real storage, travel, multiplayer, charging, or setup problem.

More storage: microSD Express only
For Switch 2 game storage, use a microSD Express card. An ordinary microSD card from an original Switch cannot save or load digital games or save data on Switch 2. Nintendo says Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards up to 2 TB, and an internet system update is required the first time a card is used. An older card may still let you access Switch screenshots and videos, but not serve as Switch 2 game storage. Check Nintendo’s microSD and microSD Express compatibility information before purchasing. If the internal space is enough for your library, there is no need to buy a card immediately.

Travel protection: case and screen protector
If you carry the console, a case and screen protector can help protect it in transit. Nintendo sells Switch 2-specific options; third-party products should explicitly state that they fit Switch 2. Do not assume a case made for the original Switch will fit.

Another controller or easier charging
The included Joy-Con 2 pair is enough for many buyers. Consider a Switch 2 Pro Controller if you prefer a traditional controller, or a Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip if you want a controller-shaped grip that charges the Joy-Con pair over USB-C. Whether another controller is useful for multiplayer depends on the games and number of players; check each game’s controller and player requirements rather than assuming one extra controller is always needed. Nintendo’s accessory catalog lists the official options.
Camera, extra dock, or replacement adapter
These are situational purchases, not standard upgrades. A Switch 2 camera is for features that use a camera; a separate dock can serve a second TV location; and a replacement AC adapter is for a lost, damaged, or additional power supply. The console package already includes a dock and adapter.

Can you reuse original Switch games, controllers, and accessories?
Reuse is item-specific. Compatible physical and digital Switch games can carry over, but not every game is fully compatible. Original Joy-Con controllers can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but cannot attach to the console or charge from it; you need separate compatible charging equipment if you plan to use them. The original Switch Pro Controller can pair wirelessly and charge through the Switch 2 dock by USB. Some older accessories, straps, grips, and card types do not work with Joy-Con 2 or Switch 2. Check Nintendo’s transfer guide and compatibility list for the exact item or game before counting on it.

A simple buying checklist
- Choose the system: Compare the current local price of the console and game separately with the bundle price; choose the bundle if you want Mario Kart World and the savings make sense.
- Check your games: Look up compatibility for any original Switch title you rely on, especially before treating Switch 2 as a replacement for your old system.
- Assess storage: Start with the 256 GB internal storage. If it will not fit your library, choose a microSD Express card—not a conventional microSD card.
- Add only needed extras: Choose a fitted case for travel, a Pro Controller for your preferred play style, or other accessories only for a specific use.
