Then confirm that the oil also meets the required performance category and any manufacturer-specific approval. There is no single viscosity grade that suits every engine.
What the viscosity grade on an oil label means
SAE viscosity grades classify engine oils by rheological properties; they are not a universal ranking of which oil is best. The American Petroleum Institute (API) says the grades are intended to help engine manufacturers determine which viscosities to recommend for their engines, and oil marketers formulate and label products to those classifications. See API 1509, Appendix F, “SAE Viscosity Criteria”.

In a multigrade label such as 5W-30, the W grade and the grade after the hyphen reflect different test criteria. API describes W grades using low-temperature cranking and pumping limits, as well as a kinematic-viscosity requirement at 100°C. A multigrade must also meet criteria for its non-W grade at 100°C and a minimum high-temperature/high-shear viscosity measured at 150°C. These classifications explain what the label represents; they do not replace the vehicle maker’s recommendation.
How to find the right grade for your vehicle
- Identify the exact vehicle and engine. Recommendations can vary by engine and market, so use the information for your particular vehicle rather than a general chart.
- Open the owner’s manual or manufacturer service documentation. Look for the engine-oil or maintenance section. API likewise advises vehicle owners to consult the manual before using its oil-category guidance: API oil categories and classifications.
- Record every requirement. Note the specified SAE viscosity grade, the required API or ILSAC performance category, and any manufacturer-specific approval or specification.
- Check the oil’s label and product details. Match the grade and every stated performance or approval requirement. An oil that has the right viscosity grade is not automatically suitable if it does not meet the other required specifications.
- Use alternatives only when the manufacturer lists them. If the manual permits more than one grade, follow its stated conditions for choosing among them. Do not assume an alternative is allowed because of climate, engine age, or personal preference.
How to compare oils when the manual permits options
Compare only oils that meet the choices and conditions listed for your engine. Check each candidate against these requirements:
#1 Best Overall
- Formulated for engines with 75,000 miles or more, Valvoline MaxLife High Mileage synthetic blend is formulated with seal conditioners to help prevent oil leaks and reduce oil consumption
- Delivers 20% better wear protection and 15% better sludge defense than industry standards to help prevent engine breakdown
- Extra detergents safeguard against friction, corrosion and deposits to keep high-mileage engines clean
- Advanced friction-fighting additives help maximize performance and improve fuel efficiency
- Provides performance benefits for high mileage, new and re-built engines alike
- Allowed viscosity: Is the grade explicitly listed or permitted for that engine and operating condition?
- Performance category: Does the oil meet the required API or ILSAC category?
- Manufacturer approval: Does the product state any required manufacturer-specific approval?
API categories and compatibility are not interchangeable across all engine types. For example, API says backward compatibility for diesel categories “usually – but not always” applies; consult the manual and the applicable category guidance rather than inferring compatibility from a label alone. API’s licensing marks identify oils that meet program requirements, but a mark does not substitute for checking the grade and vehicle-specific specifications. See API EOLCS publications and API Engine Oil Licensing and Certification System.
Why a general viscosity chart is not enough
A general chart cannot establish which grade is approved for a particular engine. The API’s viscosity classification describes oil properties; the vehicle manufacturer’s documentation determines which grade or permitted alternatives apply to that engine. The available API guidance does not establish a universal rule for changing viscosity based on climate, age, fuel economy, or wear. Use an alternative only when the manufacturer’s documentation permits it.
Rank #2
- High Mileage for engines 75,000+ miles
- Helps extend engine life of higher mileage vehicles
- Protects for 15,000 miles – guaranteed*
- Contains additives to help fight sludge
- Keeps your engine running like new
Check that the specification is current
API’s document index lists API 1509, Engine Oil Licensing and Certification System, as the 24th edition, dated July 2026 and amended September 23, 2026: API EOLCS publications. API’s category guidance covers current and previous API and ILSAC categories and recommends checking the owner’s manual. Because category status can change, confirm that the oil meets the category required by your vehicle and consult the latest applicable manufacturer documentation.
