How to Choose the Right Milwaukee M18 Tool for Your Project

Match a Milwaukee M18 tool to your project by starting with the operation, then comparing model-specific capability, battery trade-offs, handling, and kit contents.

Choose an M18 tool by the job it must do—not by the M18 label alone. Start with the operation (drilling, driving, cutting, grinding, or detail work), then check the exact model’s capability, how it will fit the work area, and which battery and kit contents suit your workload.

Start with the operation your project requires

Tool categories solve different problems. Milwaukee’s M18 six-tool combo kit lists a drill/driver, impact driver, circular saw, SAWZALL reciprocating saw, grinder, and multi-tool as separate tools. Pick the category that performs the operation you need; one tool should not be assumed to replace another.

  • Drill/driver: drilling holes and driving fasteners where a drill/driver is appropriate.
  • Impact driver: driving fasteners with a dedicated impact-driver tool.
  • Circular saw: making circular-saw cuts.
  • Reciprocating saw: making cuts suited to a reciprocating saw.
  • Grinder: grinding tasks.
  • Multi-tool: oscillating tasks.

The available manufacturer information does not provide a complete material-by-material selection chart. For an exact project, check the tool’s intended application and specifications rather than inferring suitability from the M18 platform name.

Compare the exact model, not the M18 family in general

Specifications vary by model. For example, Milwaukee lists its M18 Compact Brushless 1/2-inch Drill/Driver Kit (3601-21CT) at 550 in-lb of torque and 0–1,700 RPM. Those are listed specifications for this model, not a description of every M18 drill or tool.

#1 Best Overall
Milwaukee 2626-20 M18 18V Lithium Ion Cordless 18,000 OPM Orbiting Multi Tool with Woodcutting Blades and Sanding Pad with Sheets Included (Battery Not Included, Power Tool Only)
  • 12 SPEED SETTINGS: This fully adjustable tool will switch from 11,000 to a whopping 18,000 OPM for a variety of applications, from the delicate to the heavy duty
  • DURABILITY: The all-metal gear case will help this tool resist common impacts on the job, prolonging its longevity
  • HANDLING: A rubberized mold covering the handle allows you to keep a firm grip of this multi-tool, improving handling even in slippery conditions
  • LED LIGHTING: Illuminate your work subject with the help of the onboard LED panel, located at on the head of the tool so it works from any angle
  • REDLINK TECHNOLOGY: The M18 batteries that plug into this tool have technology that allows cross-communication between the two platforms. This means that when the batteries know when the tool is close to overheating, and they’ll ease the amount of power they give out. This, too, improves the longevity of the multi-tool

Use published specifications to compare tools that perform the same operation, then consider access and handling. Milwaukee describes the 3601-21CT as compact; a compact design may help in a tight work area, but whether it feels comfortable depends on the user and task.

Choose an M18 battery with the workload in mind

Milwaukee states that “All M18™ Batteries are compatible with M18™ tools & chargers.” Its battery guidance describes three M18 battery-size categories with different trade-offs:

Rank #2
Milwaukee 2719-20 M18 FUEL Hackzall (Bare Tool), Red, Black,
  • POWERSTATE Brushless Motor: Increased cutting speed and power throught the toughtest applications
  • REDLINK Plus Intelligence: The most advanced system of cordless power tool electronics; provides optimized performance and overload protection using total sysem communication between tool, battery and charger
  • REDLITHIUM battery technology: Superior pack construction, electronics and performance deliver more work per charge and more work over pack life than any battery on the market
  • 1-Handed design provides superior control and versatitily over standard reciprocating saws
  • 7/8 in. stroke length removes more material with each stroke resulting in the faster cuts
  • CP: the most compact and lightest option.
  • XC: a balance of size and weight, power, and runtime.
  • HD: the largest overall size, intended for high-power, longer-runtime use in long-duration, high-demand applications.

That guidance supports a trade-off, not a universal battery recommendation. A compact, lighter battery may be preferable for overhead work or tight spaces; a longer or more demanding task may make a larger battery more attractive. Consider the handling impact as well as the runtime you need.

M18 is a distinct battery platform. Milwaukee’s battery-selection article identifies M12, M18, and MX FUEL as separate systems and advises matching the battery label to the tool. Do not assume an M12 or MX FUEL battery fits an M18 tool.

Check what the kit includes before buying

A kit’s name does not tell you whether it duplicates equipment you already own. Compare its contents with your current tools, batteries, and charger.

Example Listed contents Useful consideration
M18 Compact Brushless 1/2-inch Drill/Driver Kit (3601-21CT) Drill, one M18 REDLITHIUM CP2.0 battery, M18/M12 multi-voltage charger, and contractor bag A drill/driver bundle with one compact CP battery; check whether that battery capacity and included charger suit your work and existing equipment.
M18 6-tool combo kit (2697-26) Drill/driver, impact driver, circular saw, SAWZALL reciprocating saw, grinder, multi-tool, batteries, charger, and bag A broad set for someone building out several tool categories; it may be more than needed for a single project or someone who already owns some of these tools.

Contents are those listed on Milwaukee’s product pages; confirm current model status and bundle contents before purchase. The available information does not establish whether either kit is the better value at current prices.

A practical selection checklist

  1. Name the operation. Decide whether the project calls for drilling, impact driving, circular or reciprocating cutting, grinding, or oscillating work.
  2. Confirm the material and application. Check the exact tool’s intended use; the information available here does not establish a complete material-by-material match.
  3. Compare model-specific capability. Use specifications published for the models you are considering, and do not transfer one model’s figures to the entire M18 line.
  4. Think about access and handling. Account for tight spaces, overhead work, and the weight of the tool-and-battery combination.
  5. Match battery size to the workload. Weigh CP compactness, XC balance, and HD capacity against the duration and demands of the task.
  6. Audit the bundle. Check whether the package includes the tool, battery, charger, and bag you need—and whether any of them duplicate what you already own.

What to verify before purchasing

Product pages and kit contents can change. Confirm the current product listing, specifications, included items, and availability with Milwaukee or an authorized seller before you buy. The information here does not establish current prices, hands-on performance, durability, or the best tool for a project whose precise material and requirements have not been specified.
