Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Milwaukee sells three main battery systems, M12, M18 and MX FUEL, and a pack works only within its own system. Once the platform matches, you choose a pack type (CP, XC or HD) by weighing weight, size, power and runtime. This guide covers both steps and the charger and manual checks that go with them. It relies on Milwaukee’s own published guidance, so performance figures are the manufacturer’s claims and not independent tests.
Are all Milwaukee batteries interchangeable?
No. They are interchangeable within a platform, not across platforms. Mike Anderson, listed as the author of Milwaukee’s battery selection guide, puts it simply: “The easiest way to know which batteries work with your tool(s) is to make sure their labels match.” Milwaukee’s batteries and chargers FAQ says the same for the largest system: “All M18™ batteries are compatible with M18™ tools and chargers.” (Milwaukee guide, Milwaukee FAQ)

The platforms
| Platform | Voltage | Compatibility rule |
|---|---|---|
| M12 | 12 V | M12 packs, M12 tools, M12 chargers |
| M18 | 18 V | M18 packs, M18 tools, M18 chargers |
| MX FUEL | 72 V | MX FUEL packs, tools and chargers only |
Voltages are from Milwaukee’s 2024 selection guide. The same guide describes M4 and M28 as outliers. If you own an older or unusual tool, check its manual and exact model number before buying a pack. Milwaukee says its range covers more than 70 lithium-ion batteries and chargers for more than 500 cordless tools and equipment (2024 figure, which will change as the lineup does). (Milwaukee guide)

Pack type: CP, XC or HD
Within a platform, pack type sets the trade-off between handling and endurance. Milwaukee describes them this way:
#1 Best Overall
- REDLINK Intelligence: provides optimized performance and overload protection using total system communication between tool, battery and charger
- CP (compact): smaller and lighter. A good fit when portability and handling matter, such as overhead work or tight spaces.
- XC (extended capacity): a balance of size and weight, power and runtime.
- HD (high demand): larger, with high power and longer runtime for demanding work, at the cost of more size and weight.
Technology tier is a separate choice
REDLITHIUM, HIGH OUTPUT and FORGE are tiers. CP, XC and HD are types. Don’t read a tier name as a capacity or runtime rating. Milwaukee claims the following, and none of it is independent test data:
- M12 HIGH OUTPUT: 25% more power and 25% cooler than standard REDLITHIUM.
- M18 HIGH OUTPUT: 50% more power and 50% cooler than standard REDLITHIUM.
- FORGE: presented as Milwaukee’s most advanced tier.

Start with the battery that came with the tool
Milwaukee says the pack shipped with a tool is the one its engineers judged optimal for that tool and its typical uses. Treat it as a baseline. Go smaller if the tool feels heavy or tiring in your hand. Go larger if you run out of charge on your real jobs. (Milwaukee guide)

- Versatility: Powers more than 200+ Milwaukee M18 cordless power tools
A quick decision path
- Read the platform label (M12, M18 or MX FUEL) on every tool you own or plan to buy.
- If you own tools on several platforms, count how many sit on each. Packs and chargers don’t carry across, so each platform needs its own.
- Pick the pack type: CP for light handling, XC for general use, HD for heavy or long-running work.
- Decide whether a higher tier (HIGH OUTPUT or FORGE) is worth it for demanding tools, bearing in mind that the benefits are manufacturer claims.
- Confirm the exact pack against the tool’s manual if the tool is legacy, unusual or an M4/M28 model.
Chargers and charge times
Use Milwaukee chargers on the matching platform. Milwaukee’s M18 and MX FUEL guidance advises against third-party batteries and chargers. Read the tool and battery manuals for safety, storage and warranty details. (M18 FAQ, MX FUEL FAQ)

Charge time depends on the pack and charger pairing. Milwaukee’s current product FAQs (accessed 2026) list these times, tested at room temperature with its Super Chargers. Milwaukee says actual results may vary.
