How to Choose the Right Lubricant for a 3D Printer’s Motion System

The right 3D-printer lubricant depends on the exact model and motion component. Check the manufacturer’s instructions before servicing rods, rails or lead screws.

Choose lubricant by identifying the printer model and the exact motion component—not by picking a general-purpose grease. Smooth rods, linear rails and Z-axis lead screws can have different instructions, even on printers from the same manufacturer. Check your model’s maintenance guide for the lubricant, application point, amount and service interval before applying anything.

Identify the component before choosing lubricant

First determine whether the part is a smooth rod with a linear bearing, a recirculating linear rail, or a threaded lead screw. They are not interchangeable lubrication points. The manufacturer warns that different components can require different lubrication types and that the wrong type can cause damage (Prusa troubleshooting guidance).

Use the maintenance instructions for your exact printer model and component. The examples below show why a lubricant recommended for one model or part should not be treated as a universal choice.

Component and model Manufacturer guidance Scope
Smooth rods and bearings, CORE One/+ and CORE One L Clean the rods and apply a small amount of Prusa Lubricant. For the named models and axes in their guides. CORE One/+ guide; CORE One L guide.
Smooth rods, MINI/MINI+ After approximately 200 print hours, clean the rods and apply a suitable Super Lube. If movement remains rough, the guide says bearings may be removed and greased internally. This advice is for the MINI/MINI+ smooth rods, not its rails or lead screw. MINI/MINI+ guide.
Linear rails, CORE One/+ and CORE One L Use the dedicated linear-rail lubrication set. The CORE One/+ guide recommends service every 3–6 months and says not to use Prusa Lubricant or products outside that set on its rails. The set specifies Microlube GL 261. Model-specific; follow the guide for the printer. CORE One/+ guide; CORE One L guide.
XL linear rails and Z-axis lead screws Use the dedicated rail lubrication set on the rails. The XL guide says to lubricate Z-axis lead screws with Prusa Lubricant after approximately 500 print hours. Its rail set specifies Microlube GL 261. These are XL-specific instructions; other models have different lead-screw guidance. XL guide.
Z-axis lead screws and trapezoidal nuts, MINI/MINI+, MK3.5/S and i3 The cited guides say not to lubricate these parts. Do not substitute advice for another model. MINI/MINI+ guide; MK3.5/S guide; i3 maintenance guide.

How to select and apply the lubricant

  1. Find the model-specific maintenance page. Match the printer model and, where relevant, the axis or component. Do not generalize from another printer, even if it is also a Prusa.
  2. Confirm the lubrication point. Distinguish smooth rods, linear rails and threaded lead screws. A rail may require a dedicated set while a nearby smooth rod uses another lubricant—or no lubricant may be specified for a lead screw.
  3. Use only the named product or approved option. For example, the MINI/MINI+ guide names suitable Super Lube for its smooth rods, while CORE One/+ rails require their dedicated set. Do not assume a general-purpose grease is compatible.
  4. Clean and apply exactly as directed. Follow the guide’s application location and amount. Prusa’s maintenance guide cautions, “Don’t apply too much of the paste, it will have the opposite effect.” (Prusa printer maintenance guide.) Excess paste can collect dust.
  5. Follow the model’s service interval. The cited instructions include approximately 200 print hours for MINI/MINI+ smooth-rod maintenance, every 3–6 months for certain CORE One/+ linear rails, and approximately 500 print hours for XL Z-axis lead screws. These intervals apply only to the named models and components.

What not to assume

  • Do not lubricate every rod, rail, belt, pulley or lead screw just because it is part of the motion system.
  • Do not use the lubricant for smooth rods on a linear rail unless the exact printer guide permits it. CORE One/+ rail guidance explicitly excludes Prusa Lubricant and products outside its dedicated rail set.
  • Do not apply oil or grease to a lead screw based on advice for another printer. The XL guide calls for lead-screw lubrication; MINI/MINI+, MK3.5/S and i3 instructions say not to lubricate their Z-axis threaded lead screws or trapezoidal nuts.
  • Do not treat a lubricant’s general-purpose or high-viscosity label as proof of suitability. MK3.5/S and i3 guidance lists options including Super Lube 210XX, GLEIT-µ HF 400 and Mogul LV 2-EP in its maintenance context and advises against very high viscosity; check the exact guide for the part being serviced.

If movement still feels rough

Do not respond by adding more lubricant or switching products without checking the manual. The MINI/MINI+ guide offers one model-specific next step: if smooth-rod movement remains rough after lubrication, its bearings may be removed and greased internally. For other printers, use the troubleshooting and maintenance steps for that model rather than transferring this procedure.
