MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is a four-character tag-team fighter, but you do not control all four teammates from the opening bell. A match starts with your first two selected characters available; a qualifying stage break or wall splat, or losing a round, brings the other two into the match. You can call teammates for assists and, in the July 2026 Open Beta controls documented by PlayStation, switch to a called teammate during a brief on-screen prompt.
Why you start with only two characters
Your team has four characters, but the match makes them available in stages. The official MARVEL Tōkon support FAQ says only the first two selected characters are available at the start. The remaining two are assembled after a qualifying stage break or wall splat, or after you lose a round. That means your full lineup becomes part of the match as it unfolds, rather than being ready for immediate use.

A stage break is not triggered by just any hit. The FAQ lists possible causes including certain attacks or throws, select Skill attacks, and a successful light-route Link Attack near the edge of the screen. A break can lead to a stage transition or wall splat and assemble the rest of your team. Losing a round is another way to bring them in.

Call the teammate you want
In the beta guide, X calls an Assemble Assist. The direction you hold with the call selects the teammate: neutral or right calls teammate two, down calls teammate three, and left calls teammate four. The called character performs an assist attack. The direction therefore matters: it lets you choose which available teammate to call rather than cycling through them.
Switch after the assist
After an assist, the game briefly displays a “Switch?” prompt. Press L2 while the prompt is visible to switch control to that character. You can learn to call assists first, then add the assist-to-switch sequence once you are comfortable tracking the prompt and your opponent.

Teammate calls can also defend
The same Open Beta guide describes two defensive uses of teammates. Assemble Counter uses Square + X while you are not guarding; it can counter an attack during the backstep. Crossover uses Square + X while you are guarding to call a teammate to interrupt the opponent’s attack. These actions give teammate calls a defensive role as well as an offensive one.
How to choose a four-character team
The official PlayStation game page encourages experimenting with character combinations to find combos, synergies, and strategies. It describes distinct abilities and playstyles, but the official materials do not establish a universally best lineup, quantified synergy bonuses, or fixed jobs such as “anchor.” Treat team-building as experimentation, not a prescribed formula.

- Start with a favorite: focus on one character whose moves and playstyle you enjoy.
- Try the assist options: see which teammates’ calls complement the way you approach a fight.
- Expand as you learn: experiment with the rest of the team as you become more familiar with the match flow.
This is a practical learning path, not an official ranking method. Kazuto Sekine, Game Director and Lead Battle Designer at Arc System Works, said players “only need to master one character in order to play the game,” rather than learning multiple characters before they can get started. That makes it reasonable to begin with your main character and learn the broader team system gradually.
Why the same assist call may act differently
In a PlayStation Blog developer interview, Sekine described Assemble assists as context-sensitive: depending on the situation and what is happening in the match, the assist may perform a different action suited to that moment. This explains why an assist call should not be assumed to produce one identical action in every circumstance. The interview does not provide a complete trigger list, so it does not support predicting a specific action for every match state.

Do you need a special controller?
No special controller is established as a requirement for using assists. PlayStation’s official FAQ says PS5 players can use a compatible arcade stick or leverless controller and customize button inputs. It does not establish a gameplay advantage for those peripherals over a standard controller.
