A bulb’s wattage tells you how much power it uses; it does not tell you how bright it is. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) guide recommends comparing shape, brightness, and color when selecting a bulb.
1. Check the fixture’s base, shape, and space
Start at the socket and fixture, not with a wattage number. Match the bulb’s base and shape to what the fixture accepts, then check the bulb’s dimensions against the available space. Some LED lamps are wider near the base than incandescent bulbs, so a replacement that has the right socket may still be too large for a compact fixture. The Department of Energy’s 2022 Energy Saver guide and its FEMP bulb guidance both advise considering fit.

2. Choose brightness by lumens, not watts
Lumens measure the visible light a bulb emits; watts measure the electrical power it uses. To replace an incandescent bulb, use the old bulb’s brightness or the fixture’s lighting needs as your reference, then compare lumen ratings. DOE advises shoppers to compare lumens to get the desired level of brightness (Energy 101: Lumens).
For general-purpose A-type E26 LED replacements, DOE FEMP lists the following lumen outputs and wattage ranges. These ranges describe products in that category; they are not a guarantee for every bulb or a universal conversion between watts and lumens.

| Light output | FEMP-listed LED wattage range | Useful comparison |
|---|---|---|
| 450 lumens | 4.5–7 watts | Lower-output option |
| 800 lumens | 5.9–10.5 watts | DOE’s comparison for a 60-watt incandescent |
| 1,100 lumens | 9.5–14 watts | More light than the 800-lumen example |
| 1,600 lumens | 10.5–18 watts | Higher-output option |
The wattage ranges are from DOE FEMP’s purchasing table, accessed in 2026. The 800-lumen figure is a useful starting point when replacing a typical 60-watt incandescent, but the exact LED wattage depends on the bulb. Check the lumen rating rather than assuming that every bulb with a particular wattage gives the same output.
3. Pick the color appearance in Kelvin
Kelvin (K) describes correlated color temperature, or how warm or cool the light appears. It is not a measure of brightness. Lower values look warmer and more yellow; higher values look cooler and bluer. DOE FEMP’s typical examples are 2,700 K (warm), 3,000 K (soft or warm), 3,500 K (neutral), and 4,100 K (cool). These are descriptive examples, not rules for which color belongs in every room.

Embrace the future of lighting with bulbs that seamlessly adapt and excel in every application.
- 【Long Lifespan & Dedicated Service】Last up to 7 years with typical 3-hour daily use, significantly outlasting traditional bulbs.
For a familiar warm residential look, DOE cites about 2,700–3,000 K. If you are replacing a bulb in a room where the current light looks right, choosing a similar Kelvin rating can help keep the room’s color consistent. The examples and descriptions are in the DOE FEMP guidance.

4. Consider color rendering when it matters
Color rendering is separate from color temperature. The color rendering index (CRI) is a 0–100 measure of how a light source renders colors. If accurate-looking colors matter for the task or room, compare the CRI on the product information. DOE says the ENERGY STAR-qualified bulbs covered by its guidance require a CRI of at least 80; that threshold should not be taken to describe every LED bulb.

- LONG LASTING PERFORMANCE: These LED bulbs offer a 10,000 hour lifespan, providing lasting illumination for over 9 years (based on 3 hours of use each day), helping minimize replacements
- GREAT ATMOSPHERE: Enjoy daylight white light bulbs that create a bright, crisp atmosphere for any room
- STANDARD FIT: The E26 standard base provides compatibility with most fixtures, making it easy to install these LED bulbs in lamps and overhead lighting
5. Verify dimmer, sensor, and enclosed-fixture compatibility
“LED” alone does not establish that a bulb works with a particular control or fixture. Check the exact bulb’s package or technical specifications before buying:
- Dimmer: Confirm the bulb is labeled dimmable and is compatible with the dimmer system you have. Do not assume an LED will dim properly simply because the old incandescent bulb did.
- Enclosed fixture: Heat inside a fully enclosed fixture can affect some LED bulbs. DOE advises checking the packaging or technical specifications to verify that the bulb is suitable for enclosed-fixture use.
- Sensor: If the fixture uses a sensor, look for explicit product guidance on sensor compatibility rather than inferring it from the bulb type.
The DOE recommendations for these special cases appear in its FEMP guidance and 2022 Energy Saver guide.

6. Compare package details for the final choice
Once the bulb fits and meets your light and compatibility needs, use the package or specification sheet to compare candidates. DOE says the Lighting Facts label on medium screw-base bulbs includes brightness, estimated energy cost, life expectancy, light appearance, wattage, and mercury content. Treat life and energy-cost figures as product information for the specific bulb, not as a guarantee of how long it will last or what it will cost in your home.
