Set a budget, list your three most demanding tasks, and identify your non-negotiables for operating system, screen, battery, storage, and ports. Then compare configurations that meet those needs.
Start with your needs, not the spec sheet
There is no single best laptop for everyone. A student who carries a computer all day, a gamer who wants high frame rates, and an editor working with large video files face different trade-offs. ASUS recommends starting with daily needs rather than specification numbers, and RTINGS likewise puts budget and intended use at the beginning of its buying framework.

Before looking at models, write down:
- Your budget and the three most demanding tasks you expect to do.
- Required applications, games, school or work requirements, and peripherals.
- Your preferred operating system and any platform-specific workflow.
- How often you will travel with the laptop, and the screen size and weight you can live with.
- Your minimum battery needs, local storage needs, and must-have ports.
- Whether touch, pen input, gaming performance, or graphics for creative work matters.
Application compatibility comes first. Check the exact software and peripherals you depend on before comparing brands or benchmark scores. A machine that cannot run a required program is not a bargain, even if its specifications look strong.

Browsing, documents, video calls, and study
For everyday work, a mainstream processor and integrated graphics are often a sensible starting point. Microsoft’s Windows buying guide identifies Intel Core i5/i7 and Core Ultra 5/7, AMD Ryzen 5/7, and Qualcomm Snapdragon X families as mid-level options; chip names cover multiple generations, so compare the specific processor and laptop rather than relying on the family name. A current mainstream processor is also ASUS’s general recommendation for documents, browsing, streaming, calls, and study.

- AMD RADEON 610M GRAPHICS - Experience smooth entertainment; Built for streaming and multitasking, enjoy realistic visuals and efficient performance for work and play
- STORAGE AND MEMORY - 512 GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD offers fast speed and efficient storage; and 8 GB LPDDR5 RAM memory boosts performance with higher bandwidth
For a new Windows laptop, 16 GB of RAM is a useful general target: RTINGS recommended at least that much for most Windows buyers in its 2025 guide. Microsoft lists 8–16 GB for light workloads, and 8 GB may still suit genuinely light use or some Chromebook configurations, particularly if the budget is tight and the memory cannot be upgraded. For cloud-oriented use, Microsoft’s guide lists 128–256 GB of storage as an option.
Creative work, engineering, coding, and data tasks
Start with the named applications and their published requirements. Photo or video editing may call for around 16 GB of RAM, while local media files can make SSD capacity more important than it is for cloud-first office work. Microsoft’s guide gives 256 GB to 1 TB or more as a broad storage range for creative use and notes that some programs require a discrete GPU. Engineering applications, code compilation, and data analysis can also benefit from a higher-performance processor; demanding video editing, 3D rendering, and animation are cases where dedicated graphics may be appropriate.
For creative work, do not judge the display by resolution alone. Check color accuracy, brightness, panel type, reflections, and the application’s requirements. Choose capacity and graphics around the files and software you actually use rather than assuming every creator needs the same configuration.

Decide which games you play, at what resolution, and what frame rate you want before choosing a graphics chip. Those priorities determine how much GPU performance, cooling, display refresh rate, and storage you need. Microsoft’s broad gaming ranges are 16–64 GB of RAM and 512 GB–2 TB or more of storage, alongside higher-end processor classes; these are vendor guide ranges, not minimum requirements for every game.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
A faster-refresh display can make motion look smoother, but also compare response time and variable refresh rate. A gaming laptop can be heavier and louder than a general-use model, and its battery behavior under demanding play may not suit travel. Weigh those costs against the performance you need.
How much RAM and storage should a laptop have?
Choose RAM for the applications you run at once, and storage for the programs and files you keep locally. The figures below are broad ranges from Microsoft’s Windows buying guide, not universal minimums; actual application requirements and upgrade options matter.
| Use | RAM guidance | Storage guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Light, everyday tasks | 8–16 GB in Microsoft’s guide; RTINGS’ 2025 recommendation is at least 16 GB for most Windows laptops. Less may be reasonable for very light work or some Chromebook use. | 128–256 GB may suit cloud-oriented users, according to Microsoft. |
| Photo or video editing | Microsoft recommends closer to 16 GB. | 256 GB–1 TB or more, depending on local files, according to Microsoft. |
| Gaming | 16–64 GB in Microsoft’s broad guidance; requirements depend on the games and other workloads. | 512 GB–2 TB or more for a game library, according to Microsoft. |
Find out whether RAM and the SSD can be upgraded before buying. If memory is soldered or storage is difficult to replace, choose enough capacity for the laptop’s expected life. For a Windows machine you want to keep for several years, 16 GB is a practical baseline; choose more when your programs, multitasking, or games justify it.
Should you buy a Windows laptop, MacBook, or Chromebook?
Pick the platform that supports your required software, workflow, and accessories. Windows and macOS are full desktop operating systems with broad application ecosystems. ChromeOS centers on browser-based work and Android apps, so it can suit people whose needs fit those options. RTINGS cautions that specialized software and legacy drivers may not be supported on ChromeOS, and that substantial processing needs can make it a poor fit. Check each essential app and peripheral directly rather than treating these broad platform differences as a compatibility guarantee.

Also check your school or employer’s requirements, especially for managed devices, specialist applications, and support arrangements. Processor platform can affect accessory or software compatibility, so verify the exact setup.
Choose a size and form factor you will actually use
A traditional clamshell suits many people. A 2-in-1 or detachable is worth considering when touch or pen input is central to how you work. A larger display can provide more workspace; a smaller, lighter laptop is easier to carry frequently. RTINGS notes that many people find screens of 15 inches or smaller easy to carry, but screen size alone does not determine weight or whether a laptop fits comfortably in your bag. Chassis thickness and cooling design also matter.
Compare the actual model’s weight and thickness, not just its display diagonal. If possible, handle the laptop or check detailed reviews for keyboard comfort, trackpad behavior, hinge stability, and build quality.
Compare the display, battery, keyboard, and ports
Screen
Microsoft defines FHD as 1920 × 1080 pixels and 4K as 3840 × 2160 pixels. More pixels can make images sharper, but resolution is only one part of the display. Compare brightness, reflections, panel type, color accuracy, size, and refresh rate against your work. RTINGS says many productivity users can get by with 60 Hz, while gaming can benefit from a faster panel. A higher resolution may not be worth the price or power use on a small screen if you value affordability or battery life more.

Copilot+ PCs have a stated NPU threshold of 40+ trillion operations per second (TOPS) for Copilot+ PC experiences, according to Microsoft’s Windows buying guide. That platform threshold is not a general measure of laptop speed and should not replace checking whether the features or software you want actually use it.
Battery
RTINGS suggests aiming for around nine hours or more for a typical school or work day. Treat that as buying guidance, not a promise about any model: manufacturers and independent reviewers may measure battery life under different conditions. Editing video, running simulations, or gaming can drain a battery faster; screen brightness, resolution, and refresh rate also affect power use. Look for independent tests of the exact model under conditions similar to your workload.
Keyboard, camera, and connections
If you type for long sessions, try the keyboard and trackpad before buying when possible. Check webcam and microphone quality if you make frequent calls. List everything you need to connect: charger, external monitor, USB-A devices, storage, headphones, SD cards, or wired networking.
Recommended Free Tools
RTINGS suggests two USB ports as a reasonable minimum for many users, but the connector shape alone does not tell you what a USB-C port can do. Verify whether the exact laptop supports charging, video output, and the data speeds your devices need. A hub or dock can help with a documented port shortfall, but confirm compatibility before purchasing one.

How to compare specific laptop configurations
Product families often include configurations with different processors, graphics, memory, storage, screens, and operating systems. Compare the exact model number and configuration you would buy—not just the product-family name or a headline specification. Use the same priorities for each candidate:
- Total price in your region and the configuration included at that price.
- Compatibility with required software and peripherals.
- CPU and GPU performance for your actual tasks.
- RAM capacity and whether it is upgradeable.
- SSD capacity and upgrade options.
- Display brightness, resolution, panel, and refresh rate.
- Independent battery tests that resemble your use.
- Weight, thickness, keyboard, trackpad, and port types and capabilities.
- Warranty and service coverage, plus the retailer’s return terms.
Prices, configurations, and availability change by retailer, geography, and date. Check current configuration pages and independent reviews for the exact laptop before deciding. Avoid ranking unlike laptops by one benchmark or brand reputation alone.
