Gemini for Home is designed to listen in standby for its activation phrase, not to send everything you say to Google. Google says standby audio is not sent, though sounds that resemble “Hey Google” can trigger an accidental activation. Once activated, your request is sent to Google’s servers. What happens next depends on separate controls for Home History, optional recording use, and conversation features that keep the microphone active for follow-ups.
Does Gemini for Home listen to conversations?
Yes, in the limited sense that a compatible device monitors for its activation phrase while in standby. Google says: “When in standby mode, your Gemini for Home voice assistant won’t send what you are saying to Google or anyone else.” That is Google’s description of intended behavior, not an independent test of every device or interaction. A sound that resembles the activation phrase can cause an accidental activation; after activation, the request is sent to Google servers. Google Home & Nest Privacy Hub

It helps to separate three different events: the device detecting a wake phrase, Google processing a request after activation, and activity or recordings being saved or used later. They are governed by different settings.
What happens to voice activity after activation?
Home History controls whether activity such as voice-assistant queries is saved to the household member’s account in My Activity. When Home History is on, Google says this activity is used to develop and improve services, including generative AI models. Google’s documentation says activity may still be saved for up to 24 hours when Home History is off, for service provision, safety and security, and feedback processing. Turning history off therefore limits saved account activity; it does not mean no short-lived processing or retention at all. Manage & delete your Gemini for Home activity

Saved activity is not automatically the same as a stored audio recording. Google provides a separate setting, “Improve Google services with your voice, audio, and Gemini Live recordings,” for optional use of recordings to improve services. Google says this setting is off by default and can only be enabled when Home History is on. Google’s activity controls
Which privacy setting should you change?
| Control | What it affects | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Home History on or off | Whether voice-assistant activity is saved in My Activity and used for service development and improvement. With it on, Google’s default auto-delete period is 18 months; the available choices include 3 or 36 months, or no auto-delete. You can also review and delete activity. | Turning it off does not eliminate the up-to-24-hour retention Google describes for service, safety/security, and feedback processing. |
| “Improve Google services with your voice, audio, and Gemini Live recordings” | Optional use of voice, audio, and Gemini Live recordings for service improvement; Google says it is off by default. | It is not the same as Home History. Google says Home History must be on before this option can be enabled. |
| Continued Conversation or Gemini Live | Whether the device listens for follow-up speech after an answer or during an active Live session. | These features do not control saved account history or optional recording use. |
| Guest Mode | While it is on, recordings and voice-assistant activity are automatically deleted from the device owner’s account. | Interactions with other Google services and third-party apps or actions may still save related activity. |
These controls apply to Gemini for Home. Gemini Apps privacy settings in the Gemini mobile app are separate and do not control the Home assistant’s voice/audio recording-use setting. Gemini Apps Privacy Hub

Continued Conversation
When enabled, Continued Conversation listens for a few more seconds after the assistant answers so you can ask a follow-up without repeating the wake phrase. Review it in the Google Home app under Profile or Initial → Home settings → Gemini for Home voice assistant, and disable it if you do not want that follow-up window. Using a shared Google Home device
Guest Mode is intended for visitors who use a shared device. Google says recordings and voice-assistant activity are automatically deleted from the device owner’s account while Guest Mode is on. Related activity can still be saved when a guest uses other Google services or third-party apps and actions, so Guest Mode is not a blanket block on every service’s records.
