How to Choose the Right iPhone Storage Capacity

Find the right iPhone storage capacity by weighing current use, offline content, photo growth, video recording, iCloud, and the price step for your model.

Choose iPhone storage by checking what your current phone actually holds, what you need available offline, how quickly your library is growing, and whether you record large video files. Your best fit depends on the specific iPhone model and local price difference between capacities—not a universal “right” number.

Start with the storage options for your exact iPhone

Capacity choices vary by iPhone model and can change over time. Before comparing tiers, check the configuration for the model and market you plan to buy in on Apple’s iPhone comparison page. Then compare the actual prices for those capacities where you live; the value of moving up depends on that price step and your needs.

Check how much space you use now

  1. On your current iPhone, open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
  2. Note the total space used and the largest categories. Apps, photos, videos, downloaded media, and other content all occupy local storage. Apple also displays recommendations for managing space on this screen.
  3. Separately check cloud use at Settings > [your name] > iCloud. Cloud storage and the iPhone’s built-in capacity are different limits.

Use current use as a baseline, not a forecast. Think about how long you expect to keep the phone and whether you are adding photos, videos, apps, or work files faster than before.

Account for what you keep offline

Films, music, maps, games, and work files downloaded for offline use take up room on the iPhone until you remove or manage them. If you often travel without reliable internet or want large libraries available at all times, allow more local capacity for that content. If you are comfortable downloading items only when needed and removing them afterward, your offline needs may be smaller.

Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Understand what iCloud Photos can—and cannot—do

With iCloud Photos and Optimize Storage enabled, full-resolution photos and videos are stored in iCloud while space-saving copies can be kept on the iPhone. Apple describes this behavior in its iCloud Photos guidance. This can reduce local use, but it does not add built-in iPhone storage: the library uses both device and iCloud capacity, and fetching originals depends on network access.

Photos and videos are synced across devices. Deleting an item from one synced device also deletes it from the others, so iCloud Photos is not a separate archive for items you intend to remove from your phone.

Apple says new iCloud accounts include 5 GB of free storage. That allowance is separate from the iPhone capacity you buy, and your photo library may require more cloud space.

Give large video workflows their own allowance

If you rarely record video, ordinary clips need not drive your purchase by themselves. Frequent ProRes recording is different: Apple says ProRes files can be up to 30 times larger than HEVC files, and at least 10 percent of device storage must be free to record ProRes. Those requirements are in Apple’s ProRes recording guidance. Plan for substantial headroom rather than treating all video as equivalent.

When an external drive is relevant

Selected iPhone Pro models can record ProRes directly to external USB-C storage. Apple’s requirements include an exFAT-formatted drive, a USB 3 cable rated for at least 10 Gbit/s, and minimum write speeds of 220 MB/s for 4K60 or 440 MB/s for 4K120 recording. Confirm that the specific iPhone generation and recording mode support the workflow. An external drive can help with this specialist video use, but it is not a general substitute for adequate built-in capacity.

Make the capacity decision

  • Lean toward a lower tier if your current use is modest, you keep little offline, your library grows slowly, and you are comfortable managing downloads or using Optimize Storage with enough iCloud capacity.
  • Consider a middle tier if current use already takes a meaningful share of your phone, you expect steady growth, or you want more offline content without frequent cleanup.
  • Consider a higher tier if you keep extensive media or work files offline, expect years of continued growth, or record large amounts of high-quality video—especially ProRes.

These are usage profiles, not fixed capacity rules. Compare your used-space baseline and expected growth with the actual tiers and price increments for the model you are buying. If cloud dependence and network access are acceptable, optimization may ease local pressure; if offline access and large video files matter, more built-in room can be more useful.
