What changes between iPad Pro M4 storage tiers?
Both the 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro M4 are offered with 256GB, 512GB, 1TB or 2TB of storage. The capacity also determines the configuration tier: 256GB and 512GB models have 8GB of RAM and a 9-core CPU, while 1TB and 2TB models have 16GB of RAM and a 10-core CPU. Apple lists nano-texture display glass only for the 1TB and 2TB configurations. These are specifications, not independent performance tests. 11-inch ProRes recording differs by capacity
Apple specifies ProRes recording at up to 1080p at 30 fps for the 256GB 11-inch model; its other 11-inch configurations list up to 4K at 30 fps. If ProRes recording is central to your decision, check the exact specification for the size you plan to buy: the cited capacity-specific comparison is for the 11-inch model, so do not assume its wording applies identically to the 13-inch version. Apple’s specifications are the reference for the listed limits.

These are workload-based recommendations, not tested storage thresholds. Apple does not prescribe a capacity for a particular kind of user. Before choosing, consider what you currently keep downloaded, how much video or creative material you retain on the iPad, whether the 16GB RAM/10-core CPU tier or nano-texture glass matters to you, and the actual price difference between configurations in your market.

How to make the choice from your own storage habits
- Check what occupies local storage. Look at the files, offline downloads and projects you actually keep on the iPad, rather than counting everything available in cloud services.
- Estimate what you will retain between sessions. If you routinely keep a larger media library or active project files on-device, 512GB provides more room than 256GB. If large creative assets are a regular part of your workflow, consider 1TB or 2TB.
- Decide whether the configuration features matter. The jump to 1TB also moves you to 16GB RAM and a 10-core CPU, and makes nano-texture glass available. Choose that tier for those features only if they are relevant to you, not because storage alone proves you need it.
- Compare local prices for the exact models. Price gaps vary by market and retailer. Compare the same screen size and connectivity configuration before deciding whether added capacity is worth the cost.
Can an external drive substitute for more built-in storage?
Not completely. Apple says Files and other supported apps can access files on connected USB storage and SD cards, which can help with transferring or working with compatible files. But the drive must be connected, and app compatibility and file format matter; it does not become built-in iPad capacity.
Apple’s iPad guidance lists APFS, encrypted APFS, Mac OS Extended (HFS+), exFAT, FAT32 and FAT as supported formats, and requires a single data partition. External hard drives may need their own power source; for an iPad with Thunderbolt/USB 4, Apple notes that a powered hub may help if the drive does not supply power. When 2TB makes sense
Choose 2TB when you can name the large local archive or recurring workload that needs that much internal space and you want it available without relying on a connected drive. It is not automatically a future-proof choice: the value depends on your files, workflow and the price premium over 1TB.
