The 2024 iPad mini with A17 Pro—often called the iPad mini 7—comes in 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB configurations. Choose based on what you keep on the iPad itself: apps and games, downloaded media, photos, and project files. For a useful starting point, check storage use on your current device, then allow room for the files and downloads you expect to add.
What storage options does the iPad mini 7 have?
Apple lists the iPad mini (A17 Pro) in 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB configurations. When Apple announced the A17 Pro model in October 2024, it made 128GB the starting capacity—double the previous generation’s base storage, according to Apple’s announcement.

Those figures describe the listed device capacities, not the exact amount available for your files. Apple says formatted capacity is lower and varies with software, settings, and iPad model. The usable amount on a particular device can therefore differ.

Which capacity fits your use?
Think about the files you want available locally, including when you are offline. The suggestions below are workload-based guidance, not guaranteed limits or Apple recommendations.

There is no established typical storage requirement for iPad mini buyers, so broad claims about what a “typical” person needs are not a reliable substitute for your own usage. The right tier depends on your habits and the local price difference between configurations.
How to estimate the storage you will need
- Check current use. On your existing iPad or iPhone, open Settings > General > iPad Storage or Settings > General > iPhone Storage, as applicable. Look at which apps and categories take up space. This provides a more useful starting point than guessing from a generic average.
- Identify what must be available offline. Consider what you download for travel, school, work, drawing, or gaming, and whether you need those items when connectivity is unreliable.
- Account for files you create and keep. Photos, videos, and creative project files can add to local use. If drawing is part of your plans, Apple lists Apple Pencil Pro as compatible; the Pencil itself does not increase storage.
- Leave comfortable headroom. Do not choose solely by matching today’s usage. Allow for apps, downloads, and projects you expect to add during the time you use the iPad.
- Compare the actual local prices. Check the cost of each capacity in your country and at the time you buy. Upgrade costs vary by region and date, so a larger tier is worthwhile only if its extra capacity is useful to you.
Can iCloud or a USB-C drive replace more built-in storage?
No: cloud storage and external drives are separate ways to manage files, not changes to the iPad’s internal capacity. Apple lists iCloud as a service and lists the iPad’s capacities as device configurations. Whether a particular file or app can be used from cloud or external storage depends on the app and workflow, so do not assume every item can stay off-device.

The iPad mini’s USB-C port supports USB 3 transfer speeds up to 10Gb/s according to Apple’s specifications. A compatible external drive can be useful for transferring or keeping some files outside the iPad, but it remains a separate workflow and does not expand the internal storage tier. Apple’s specifications do not establish compatibility or behavior for every drive and app.
