Choose a connection that both your audio source and powered speakers support, and make sure the input accepts the source’s signal type and level. Balanced XLR or 1/4-inch TRS is common for professional line-level equipment; unbalanced RCA or 3.5 mm is common for consumer line-level sources. Bluetooth, optical, USB audio and phono support vary by speaker model, so check the labels and manuals at both ends before connecting.
Start by matching the source output to the speaker input
Powered speakers contain amplification, but their inputs are not interchangeable. A speaker may accept a line-level signal, a microphone signal, or a digital format—or only some of these. Identify the source’s output and the speaker’s input, then confirm that they match in both connector and signal type.

A plug fitting into a socket does not prove that the connection is suitable. An adapter changes the connector shape; by itself, it does not convert a signal, make an unbalanced path balanced, or provide a missing preamp. Check both device manuals when the labels are unclear.
Compare the common connection options
| Connection | Typically used for | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| XLR | Balanced professional audio connections | Both devices must support compatible XLR connections and signal levels. |
| 1/4-inch TRS | Balanced professional audio connections | Confirm that the jack is a balanced audio input or output, not a different type of connection. |
| RCA | Unbalanced consumer line-level audio | Look for RCA line inputs on the speaker and a compatible output on the source. |
| 3.5 mm | Consumer audio sources such as some phones or computers | Confirm that the speaker has a compatible analog input and that the source provides an audio output. |
| Bluetooth | Wireless audio between compatible devices | Both source and speaker must support Bluetooth audio. |
| Optical or USB audio | Digital audio from supported sources | Check that the speaker accepts the source’s particular digital connection. A USB-shaped port alone does not establish USB audio support. |
| Phono | Turntables that require phono-level input handling | Determine whether a phono preamp is built into the turntable, the speaker, or another component in the signal chain. |
These are common uses, not universal rules for every product. For instance, product documentation for the JBL LSR2300 and PreSonus Eris E5 BT describes RCA inputs, while Yorkville’s EF10P documentation lists XLR and 1/4-inch TRS line-level main inputs. The equipment manuals determine what a particular port accepts.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose based on compatibility, not a blanket sound-quality ranking
The available product documentation establishes connection types and setup details, but it does not establish a universal sound-quality ranking for XLR, TRS, RCA, Bluetooth, optical, or USB. Choose the connection that your equipment supports and that suits the installation.
- Compatibility: Confirm that the source has an output the speaker accepts.
- Signal type and level: Check whether the source is mic-level, line-level, phono-level, or digital, and whether the speaker input accepts it.
- Balanced support: If both devices provide balanced XLR or TRS connections, use an appropriately wired cable. If either end is unbalanced, a plug adapter does not make the entire path balanced.
- Built-in conversion or preamp: Verify whether the speaker accepts the source’s digital format or includes a phono preamp. If not, a suitable external interface or preamp may be needed; confirm the required setup in the manuals.
- Convenience: Bluetooth can avoid a signal cable when both devices support it. A wired connection may suit a fixed installation or a source whose available output is wired.

Mixer or audio interface to a PA speaker or monitor
When both devices provide balanced XLR or TRS connections at compatible levels, use the matching balanced output and input. Yorkville lists XLR and 1/4-inch TRS line-level main inputs for the EF10P; PreSonus documents balanced TRS main outputs on the MicroStation BT for speakers or a power amp.

Consumer equipment with RCA output
If the source provides RCA line output and the speaker has RCA line inputs, connect them with a compatible RCA cable. The JBL LSR2300 and PreSonus Eris E5 BT documentation are examples of powered-speaker products with RCA inputs.

Look for an input the speaker and device share: a compatible analog connection, Bluetooth, or a supported digital audio input. Do not infer USB audio from the connector’s shape. PreSonus says the MicroStation BT’s USB-C connector is for power and does not appear as an audio device.

TV
Use an output format on the TV that matches an input on the speaker, then confirm the TV’s output settings and the speaker’s instructions. The Klipsch R-26PF is one model that advertises optical and analog inputs as well as Bluetooth; those features should not be assumed for other powered speakers.
Turntable
Check whether the turntable or speaker provides a phono preamp before connecting the turntable to a line input. A phono input or preamp is needed somewhere in the chain. The Klipsch R-26PF advertises an integrated phono preamp, but that is a model-specific feature.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Microphone
Use an input designed for a microphone or set a combo input to mic mode if the speaker manual directs you to do so. A microphone is not a line-level source. On the Rockville BPA10, the manual says its mic/line selector applies to the XLR and 1/4-inch inputs and warns not to use both ports at once; follow the instructions for the specific speaker you own.

Check the setup before buying a cable or adapter
- Read the labels at both ends. Identify the source output and speaker input, including any mic/line selector or digital-format label.
- Check both manuals. Confirm that the ports accept compatible signal types and levels; do not rely on connector shape alone.
- Select the matching cable. For example, a balanced 1/4-inch TRS audio cable is appropriate only when the source has a compatible balanced TRS output and the speaker has a compatible balanced TRS input.
- Set any input mode as directed. If the speaker has a mic/line switch, use the setting specified for the connected source. Observe any port-use restrictions in that model’s manual.
- Use conversion or preamp equipment only when needed. If the source and speaker do not share a supported connection or signal type, verify the required interface, converter, or phono preamp before connecting them.
