For an impact driver, choose an impact-rated bit with a 1/4-inch hex shank only if that matches the tool’s manual, then match the bit tip to the fastener and choose a length that gives you access without sacrificing control. For general-purpose or precision drilling, a standard drill is often the more versatile choice.
Check the tool and bit interface first
Impact drivers commonly use a hex collet rather than the conventional chuck found on many drills. Bosch says its impact drivers accept 1/4-inch hex-shank accessories, but that does not establish compatibility with every model. Check your tool’s manual for the required shank and holder before buying.

A regular drill’s chuck may accept a wider range of bit shanks, depending on the drill. Do not assume that a bit that fits one tool is appropriate for the other: confirm both physical fit and the accessory’s intended use.

Choose the tip style and size that fit the fastener head. Bosch’s impact-bit listings include Phillips, square, and Torx options; these are examples, not a universal size guide. A poorly matched tip can engage less securely. Check the fastener itself or its packaging rather than treating any one style or size as standard for every job.

Use impact-rated bits for impact-driver fastening
For fastening with an impact driver, look for an explicit “impact-rated” or “impact-ready” designation. Bosch describes a tapered torsion zone intended to absorb torque peaks, while DEWALT describes its FlexTorq zone as designed to absorb impact. These are manufacturers’ descriptions of design intent, not independent comparative test results or guarantees of bit life.
For example, DEWALT lists an Elite Series T15 bit product in a three-pack. The listing is a product example, not evidence that T15 fits every Torx fastener or that this bit outperforms alternatives: DEWALT Elite Series T15 bits.

Choose a length that suits access and control
Pick a bit long enough to reach the fastener, including where a recess or obstruction limits access. A longer bit can improve reach, but the important practical requirement is to keep the tip properly engaged with the fastener. Bosch lists impact bits in multiple lengths; compare the available options against the job rather than choosing by length alone: Bosch Driven Power Bits.

Compare set contents, not just piece count
Before buying a set, check its tip styles and sizes against the fasteners you actually use. A larger piece count is not automatically more useful if the assortment omits the bits your work requires. Bosch’s Impact Tough Sets listings provide examples that include Phillips, square, and Torx insert or power bits; one configuration also includes a magnetic nutsetter. - Marking: Is the bit explicitly impact-rated or impact-ready for impact-driver fastening?
- Shank and holder: Does the shank fit the tool specified in its manual?
- Tip: Does its style and size match the fastener head?
- Length: Does it reach the fastener while allowing proper engagement?
- Assortment: Does the set contain the types and sizes you will use?
Decide whether the job calls for a drill or an impact driver
Bosch states that “Impact drivers are primarily designed for fastening rather than drilling.” A standard drill may be more versatile for general-purpose or precision drilling. Some impact drivers can drill with suitable hex-shank bits or a chuck adapter, but compatibility and speed vary by model. DEWALT likewise describes using impact-ready bits or a chuck adapter and cautions that an impact driver may run faster than a drill, depending on the model.
Do not treat an impact driver as a direct substitute for every drilling operation. Check the tool manual and confirm that the particular bit and setup are intended for the operation. Fit and use the bit according to the manual
Bosch’s GDR/GDS/GDX18V-1860C operating and safety instructions say to insert the bit shank well within the chuck. The manual also warns that a rotating driver tool can slide off a fastener depending on the bit or socket being used.
