How to Check Whether Your PC Runs Linux or a Unix-Like OS

Run uname -s for a system name, check /etc/os-release for a Linux distribution, or use About This Mac for macOS. These checks do not establish UNIX certification.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On a Linux or Unix-like system, open a terminal and run uname -s. It prints the system name, but it may not identify a Linux distribution. On Linux, check /etc/os-release for the distribution name and version. On a Mac, choose Apple menu > About This Mac to see the macOS name and version.

These checks identify an operating system or system family; they do not, by themselves, prove formal UNIX certification. “PC” often means a Windows computer, but Linux machines and Macs can also be personal computers.

Check a Linux or Unix-like system from the terminal

Print the system name

  1. Open a terminal on the system you want to identify.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. Run uname -s.

  3. Read the result as the system name reported by that implementation. Linux commonly reports Linux; macOS reports Darwin. Other Unix-like systems may report different names, so there is no single output that covers them all.

The POSIX uname utility writes the operating-system name by default. Running uname -a requests additional system characteristics, but the available options and details can vary between implementations.

Find the Linux distribution and version

A result of Linux identifies the kernel/system name, not necessarily the distribution installed on the computer. On Linux, inspect /etc/os-release for distribution information. In that file, PRETTY_NAME is intended as a display name; ID and VERSION_ID are machine-readable identifiers when present.

For example, a reader can display the file in a terminal with cat /etc/os-release. The format permits some fields to be absent, and vendors may add others, so do not assume every system supplies every field.

Unix-like, Linux-based, and UNIX-certified are different claims

  • Linux-based means the operating system uses the Linux kernel. To find the distribution and version, prefer /etc/os-release over guessing from the kernel name.

  • Unix-like describes systems with Unix-style behavior or interfaces; it is broader than Linux. A familiar shell, terminal, or command does not alone prove the computer runs Linux.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • UNIX certified is a formal status attached to specific products and versions in The Open Group register. Do not infer certification from a command result or Unix-like behavior. The register has listed macOS 15.0 Sequoia for both Apple silicon and Intel-based Mac computers; certification listings can change, so consult the current register for current status.

If the computer is running Windows

A Windows computer does not become Linux-based merely because a terminal or shell offers Unix-style commands. First identify the operating system Windows itself reports; if you are using a Linux environment inside Windows, distinguish that environment from the host operating system. This article’s supplied verified checks do not establish a current Windows Settings navigation path, so use current Microsoft Support instructions for the exact Windows UI labels rather than relying on an assumed path.
