Aspect ratio determines the shape; pixel dimensions determine how much image detail is available. Choose PNG, JPEG, or WebP based on transparency, compression, and the tools that need to open the file.
Start with the image’s destination
Before generating, identify the canvas or placement: a square post, widescreen video, vertical mobile layout, print, or another specific use. The closer the image’s shape is to the destination, the less likely you are to lose important content to cropping or leave unused space.

Common starting ratios include 1:1 for square placements, 16:9 for widescreen video or TVs, and 9:16 for vertical mobile content. These are examples, not universal platform specifications; check the requirements for the service or layout where the image will appear. Midjourney’s documentation explains that aspect ratio is distinct from image dimensions: Midjourney: Aspect Ratio.
Aspect ratio is shape; dimensions are pixel count
An aspect ratio describes the proportional relationship between width and height. A 1:1 image is square; a 16:9 image is wider than it is tall. Pixel dimensions, such as 1536 × 1024, give the actual width and height. Two images can share a ratio but have different pixel dimensions, and therefore different suitability for a large display or print.

What pixel dimensions should you choose?
Use dimensions that fit the delivery slot and the generator’s available options. For screen use, compare the image’s pixel dimensions with the size of the layout or display where it will be shown. Generating far beyond that need may add file size or processing time without improving the result for the intended use.
As current examples, OpenAI’s image-generation guide recommends 1024 × 1024 for square images, 1536 × 1024 for landscape, and 1024 × 1536 for portrait. These are recommendations for the documented GPT Image models, not universal settings for all generators. OpenAI also documents custom dimensions for those models subject to constraints: width and height must be multiples of 16, the aspect ratio must be between 1:3 and 3:1, each edge can be at most 3840 pixels, and total pixel count must be between 655,360 and 8,294,400. The guide describes resolutions above 2560 × 1440 as experimental. Check the current OpenAI image-generation guide for the model you intend to use.

Labels such as “1K” and “2K” do not guarantee the same dimensions across providers or models. For example, Google’s documented Gemini model table lists 1376 × 768 for 16:9 at 1K and 2752 × 1536 at 16:9 at 2K. Treat those as model-specific examples and check the current Gemini API image-generation documentation for the model and settings you are using.

Available ratios, size controls, and final output dimensions vary by generator, model, version, and upscaler. Midjourney, for example, notes that final dimensions depend on version and upscaler. Its documentation gives version 8.2 square-image examples of 2048 × 2048 for HD and 1024 × 1024 for SD; these figures are specific to that version and setting. See Midjourney: Image Size & Resolution. If an API distinguishes requested dimensions from the final output, use the final dimensions when planning delivery.

How much resolution do you need for print?
For print, work backward from the physical size and print density you need. A larger print requires more source pixels to retain detail at the same density. A practical calculation is:
Required pixels = print size in inches × target pixels per inch (PPI)

For example, a 10-inch-wide print intended for 300 PPI needs 3,000 pixels across (10 × 300). This is a planning calculation, not a guarantee of print quality: the image’s actual detail and the print service’s requirements also matter. Midjourney describes around 300 DPI as usually required for best-quality printing, but that is its general guidance, not a rule for every printer or print service. Check the intended provider’s specifications.

DPI metadata does not add pixels
Pixel dimensions describe the image data. DPI is commonly used to describe print density, while PPI expresses pixels per inch. Changing a resolution value in file metadata does not create additional image pixels. For a screen, the relevant question is whether the image has enough pixels for the display or layout—not whether a file is marked “300 DPI.” Midjourney’s explanation of screen and print resolution is available in its Image Size & Resolution guide.

Should you save an AI image as PNG, JPEG, or WebP?
Choose the format around transparency, file handling, and where the image will go next. The best choice depends on what the generator supports and what the next app, website, or service accepts.

These format details describe OpenAI’s current image-generation API documentation: PNG is the default, JPEG and WebP are alternatives, and JPEG and WebP have compression settings. Its documented models require PNG or WebP for transparent backgrounds. Other generators may offer different options, so confirm the supported formats in the relevant model documentation: OpenAI image-generation guide.
Balance quality against speed and cost
A larger image file or higher quality setting does not automatically make an image better for every use. OpenAI recommends comparing quality settings against detail, latency, and cost; it suggests low quality for quick drafts and notes that very high resolutions are experimental. A practical workflow is to generate a draft at a suitable size and quality, then compare higher settings only if the final use needs more detail or room for cropping. Avoid generating substantially above delivery requirements unless you have a specific editing, crop, or print need.
