Choose filament by matching the part’s job and environment to the printer’s capabilities. PLA is a practical starting point for easy, low-stress prints; PETG suits many everyday functional parts; ASA is a common outdoor choice; TPU is for flexible parts; and nylon is useful for wear-oriented mechanical parts when kept dry. No material is best for every use, and the exact formulation, print settings, part geometry and layer orientation all affect the result.
Start with the part, not the material name
Before choosing a spool, define what the part must do and what it will face. A decorative model has different requirements from a bracket that carries a load or a cover left outdoors. Consider sunlight, moisture, heat, impact, abrasion and repeated movement. Also consider what happens if the part fails: a generic filament guide is not enough to validate a safety-critical component.

- Appearance or low-stress prototypes: prioritize reliable printing and finish.
- Everyday functional parts: consider toughness and the likely load, along with ease of printing.
- Outdoor exposure: account for UV and weather, as well as printing stability.
- Flex or repeated movement: look at flexible grades or wear-oriented materials as appropriate.
- Heat or chemicals: verify the exact material grade and printer requirements; a family name alone does not establish suitability.
FDM parts are built in layers, so their behavior is directional. A suitable polymer can still fail if the part’s shape, orientation or interlayer bonding is wrong. Design and orient the print around its expected load.
Compare common FDM filament choices
| Material | Good starting use | Tradeoffs and checks |
|---|---|---|
| PLA | Beginner prints, models, decorations, toys, educational objects and low-stress prototypes | Generally easy to print and relatively low-warping. It is not the default choice for hot environments, outdoor exposure or loaded parts. |
| PETG | Brackets, mounts, organizers, covers and other everyday functional prints | Often offers a practical balance of toughness and printability. Watch for stringing and strong adhesion to some smooth build surfaces; follow the build-plate maker’s guidance. |
| ASA | Outdoor brackets, covers and parts exposed to sun or weather | Commonly chosen for UV and weather resistance. It prints similarly to ABS and can warp if cooling is unstable; check enclosure and ventilation recommendations. |
| ABS | Functional parts when its properties and post-processing options suit the job | Needs more controlled printing conditions. A retailer guide warns of unpleasant fumes; follow the filament maker’s ventilation and equipment instructions. |
| TPU | Grips, seals, gaskets, vibration dampers, protective feet, straps and flexible covers | Flexible, rubber-like material. Softer grades can be difficult to feed, particularly through long filament paths, and often call for slower printing. |
| Nylon / PA | Gears, hinges, bushings, clips and parts subject to wear or repeated movement | Common grades are tough and abrasion-resistant, but moisture-sensitive. Dry and store the spool as the maker directs. |
| PC | Higher-temperature functional or engineering parts, where the machine supports the particular grade | May require higher nozzle and bed temperatures and stable printing conditions. Printer and blend capabilities vary. |
| Carbon-fiber-filled blends | Applications where the specific composite’s stiffness or dimensional stability is appropriate | These are polymer composites, not metal; properties depend on the base resin and formulation. Abrasive fill often requires a compatible hardened nozzle. |
| PVA/BVOH or HIPS | Soluble or removable supports in compatible multi-material workflows | Specialized support materials, not general-purpose part filaments. Confirm compatibility with the printer and workflow. |
These are starting points, not rankings. The available guidance does not provide controlled, cross-brand test data for a universal numerical strength or heat-resistance comparison. Compare named grades using comparable test conditions and the requirement that matters for your part.

- 【Fits Most FDM Printers】 Designed for most 1.75mm FDM printers with external, top-mounted, or open spool holders. Each spool measures 140mm in diameter and 36mm in width, with a 53mm center hole. For Bambu Lab AMS or AMS lite, search MakerWorld for a compatible 250g spool adapter before use
Check whether your printer can handle the spool
Material choice is only useful if the printer can meet the exact product’s requirements. Check the machine’s nozzle and bed temperature limits, enclosure and temperature stability, build surface, extruder and filament path, nozzle material, and accepted filament diameter. Then check the spool maker’s recommended settings, drying and storage instructions, surface compatibility and nozzle requirements.
Prusa Research’s material guide gives the following example settings; they are not universal constants or a substitute for the exact filament maker’s instructions. The page was accessed in 2026 and does not state a publication year.

- ③【PLA Filament 1.75 mm】SUNLU 3D printer filament dimensional Accuracy +/- 0.02mm. SUNLU filament has wide compatibility due to the small diameter error, making it suitable for almost all 1.75mm FDM 3D printers.
- ④【Filament Spool Diameter】Spool Diameter: 8.00", Spool Width: 2.50", Spool Hub Hole Diameter: 2.20". The size of the SUNLU filament spool is suitable for hanging on a lot of FDM 3D printers.
- ⑤【PLA Recommend Settings】To achieve the best printing results with SUNLU PLA filament, we recommend printing at a nozzle temperature of 200-230°C, a bed temperature of 50-65°C, and a printing speed of 50-100mm/s.
| Material | Prusa example nozzle temperature | Prusa example bed temperature |
|---|---|---|
| PLA | 185–235 °C | 50–60 °C |
| PETG | 215–270 °C | 70–90 °C |
| ASA | 220–275 °C | 90–110 °C |
| ABS | 230–255 °C | 95–110 °C |
| PC | 270–275 °C | 100–115 °C |
| PA / Nylon | 240–285 °C | 70–115 °C |
Use the Prusa filament material guide for its examples, then follow the instructions for your specific spool. A printer’s nominal temperature capability alone does not guarantee that it can print a demanding material reliably.
Make the final choice with a short checklist
- Describe the job: model, prototype, household part, outdoor component, flexible item, wear part or heat-exposed part.
- Identify the environment and failure cost: note UV, moisture, temperature, impact, abrasion and repeated loads. Seek application-specific validation where failure could harm people or property.
- Choose a plausible material family: use the comparison above as a starting point, not as a guarantee of performance.
- Check the printer and spool together: verify temperature limits, enclosure, build surface, feed path, diameter, drying and nozzle requirements against the exact product’s documentation.
- Account for part design: orient layers and geometry for the load, and do not assume a material label compensates for weak interlayer bonding or unsuitable design.
Handle moisture, ventilation and food-contact claims carefully
Nylon is especially moisture-sensitive among the materials discussed here, so follow the manufacturer’s drying and storage directions. Other materials and workflows may also have specific handling or ventilation requirements; use the exact maker’s safety instructions rather than assuming a material is suitable for every home or printer.

Do not treat a “food-safe” filament label as proof that an FDM-printed object is food-safe. FilamentsCA’s guide cautions that gaps in FDM prints can be difficult to clean properly. That is a retailer guide’s caution, not a complete regulatory assessment, so determine requirements for the exact use and jurisdiction rather than relying on the label alone.
