The best bulk ink for an Epson printer is the bottle family specified for that exact printer model—not whichever Epson bottle is cheapest or most widely available. First, identify the ink your printer requires
“Bulk ink” can mean different things. Epson EcoTank printers have refillable tanks and model-specific bottles. Epson cartridge printers use a different supply system, so an EcoTank bottle is not a substitute for a cartridge. Even among EcoTank models, bottle families differ: Epson 522 and Epson 502 are separate products, not alternate names for the same ink.

Epson lists the 522 EcoTank bottles as uniquely keyed EcoFit bottles and identifies compatible models that include the ET-2800 and ET-4800. Those examples do not make 522 a universal Epson ink: confirm your own model against Epson’s current compatibility information. Epson’s 502 bottles are another model-specific option and must not be treated as interchangeable with 522.

If you want the choice most directly supported by Epson’s model-specific documentation, buy the genuine bottle family listed for your printer. For a model confirmed to use 522, genuine Epson 522 EcoTank bottles are a defensible choice. Epson says it strongly recommends genuine ink to help ensure optimal print quality and performance. The recommendation is Epson’s; it is not proof that all third-party inks produce poor results.

How much can bulk ink save?
Epson advertises savings of up to 80 percent versus cartridges. Its footnote dates that comparison to July 2016 and says it used manufacturers’ online prices and yields, along with NPD information, for best-selling, similarly featured consumer inkjet printers priced at $499 or less. Epson also notes that actual savings vary with print tasks, volume, and use conditions. Treat the figure as a dated manufacturer comparison—not a current guarantee for your printer or a prediction of what you will save.
For a useful purchase comparison, calculate the cost of the correct bottle set relative to its stated yield, then consider how much and what you print. A household that prints occasionally may use ink differently from a high-volume user; a low bottle price alone does not establish better value if the bottle is incompatible or the yield does not suit your needs. What do Epson’s page-yield claims mean?
Epson describes bottle yields as “thousands of pages,” but that is not a fixed yield for every model or user. Epson says replacement-bottle yield methodology uses the ISO/IEC 24712 pattern and that actual yield can vary considerably. The product-page phrase should not be converted into an exact page count unless Epson provides a yield figure for your specific printer and bottle.
- Print content and settings affect how much ink a job uses.
- Temperature, humidity, printing frequency, and maintenance can also affect yield, according to Epson.
- Ink supplied for initial setup is used in part to charge the print head, so it should not be assumed to produce the same number of pages as a replacement bottle.
Where to buy, and what to verify before ordering
Epson’s manual says genuine ink and paper can be purchased from Epson or an authorized reseller. Before checkout, confirm the exact printer model and ink code on the product listing, especially when a retailer groups several bottle families together. Product availability and compatibility listings can change, so use Epson’s current model information rather than relying on a bottle’s brand name or a match to a different EcoTank printer.
