Choose boat fenders by starting with your boat’s length, then matching their size, shape and placement to the hull and berth. A protected slip, exposed mooring, piling, raft-up or tidal dock can call for different protection; manufacturer size charts are starting points, not guarantees.
What size boat fenders do you need?
Use the boat-length range in the selected manufacturer’s chart to identify candidate fenders, then check the fender’s dimensions and intended application against the boat’s freeboard, likely contact points and docking conditions. Taylor Made describes its Hull-Gard chart as a minimum recommendation and advises checking with the marina and neighboring boaters about local conditions. Polyform’s chart distinguishes applications such as protected and unprotected moorings, pilings, rafting, and locks or concrete.

#1 Best Overall
- NO MORE HANGING BUMPERS EVERY TIME YOU DOCK: Unlike boat fenders you must toss over and retrieve on every arrival, these mount permanently to your dock edge. A continuous barrier protects your hull and dock in any tide or current, ready before you are

- PRE-INFLATED & ADJUSTABLE FIRMNESS: Arrives pre-inflated and ready to install out of the box. Prefer a firmer bumper? Top up air in seconds through the standard needle valve with any ball pump (pump not included). Do not over-inflate
- UNIVERSAL FIT & SIZING GUIDE: Measuring exactly 15.4 inches x 6.5 inches x 5.3 inches inflated, these marine bumpers fit on most normal docks. We recommend 2 pieces for docks line under 10 feet, 3-4 pieces for 10-30 feet, 5-6 pieces for 30-50 feet, and 6+ pieces for over 50 feet. Requires a flush dock side - see fit notes below
Match fender shape to the berth
A fender must protect the part of the hull that can actually contact the dock or another boat. Consider the hull’s freeboard and shape, where it will rub or press, how much stand-off is needed, and whether contact is likely to be vertical or horizontal.
- Rafting: Polyform lists buoy-shaped A or LD series as options for rafting.
- Pilings: Polyform lists F and HTM options for piling applications. Taylor Made’s Big B has a center rope tube running end to end, allowing horizontal hanging around pilings and in areas affected by tidal change.
- Locks, concrete and tidal areas: Polyform describes its NF as an extra-tough recreational option for higher-stress use in locks and tidal areas.
These are manufacturer application suggestions, not independent comparative test results. Check that the chosen model’s dimensions and mounting orientation suit your hull and berth. A buoy-shaped fender may provide greater stand-off in some situations, according to Polyform.

How many fenders should you hang, and where?
Polyform advises: “Use at least three fenders when docking.” Its suggested baseline positions are aft, at maximum beam, and forward. Hang them between the hull and dock where contact is likely. Add or reposition fenders if the hull shape or berth leaves other areas exposed; three is a starting arrangement, not a guarantee for every boat or condition.

How to attach fenders and choose line
- Pick a secure attachment point. Polyform recommends a cleat secured to the hull or deck, or the base of a rail stanchion. Do not treat an upper rail as a secure attachment.
- Match the line to the ropehold. Polyform recommends no less than 3/8-inch line for smaller fenders, increasing diameter with fender and ropehold size up to about 1 inch depending on the product. Its separate line guide says to use the largest diameter that fits. Check the specific model’s guidance.
- Choose a suitable line material. Polyform recommends nylon for its stretch and softer contact. It warns that line that is too small can concentrate wear against the ropehold, and its line guide says undersized line voids its warranty.
- Set a useful hanging length. Polyform’s line guide gives approximate lengths of 8, 9, 11 and 13 ft. These are guide values, not a universal fit; choose a length that puts the fender at the boat’s contact height.
Inflation and care for inflatable fenders
For its own products, Polyform specifies an inflation pressure of 2.1 lb/0.15 bar. Do not apply that figure to another maker’s fender; follow the instructions for the model in hand. Polyform warns that overinflation can reduce performance, cause premature failure and void its warranty.
If using Polyform’s no-gauge method, its instructions say to fill until the walls are fully expanded while retaining about 1/4 inch of depressibility under light hand pressure; the guide also gives circumference checks. Follow the product’s valve instructions: Polyform says its inflatable products can be deflated, with stated small-series exceptions. Polyform recommends storing fenders out of direct sunlight.
