Samsung update support depends on the Galaxy model. Samsung promises the Galaxy S24 series seven generations of Android OS upgrades and seven years of security updates, with the seven-year clock starting at global launch—not when you buy the phone. Other Galaxy families have different, often shorter terms, so there is no single support period for every Samsung phone.
How long is Samsung’s update support?
Samsung’s current general policy says Galaxy mobile devices can receive security-update support for up to seven years. “Up to” matters: it does not guarantee seven years of support for every Galaxy model. Samsung’s 2022 announcement, for example, set a shorter commitment for a named group of devices.

Android OS upgrades and security updates are separate measures. OS upgrades count major Android generations; security support describes how long Samsung provides security updates. A phone may therefore have one stated OS-upgrade count and a different security-support period.
What Samsung has promised for specific Galaxy models
| Galaxy models | Android OS upgrades | Security updates | Basis of the term |
|---|---|---|---|
| Galaxy S24 series | Seven generations | Seven years | From global launch, according to Samsung’s 2024 announcement. |
| Galaxy S24, S24+, S24 Ultra, Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 | Seven generations | Seven years | Named as examples in Samsung’s 2024 Sustainability Report; availability and timing may vary by product and market. |
| Galaxy S22 series, S21 family including S21 FE, Z Fold3, Z Flip3 and Tab S8 family | Up to four generations | Five years | Eligible device families named in Samsung’s 2022 policy announcement. This is a commitment for the listed cohort, not a rule for every older Galaxy. |
Samsung’s 2025 Sustainability Report describes security-update support for Galaxy mobile devices as available for up to seven years. That broad policy statement does not replace the model-specific terms above or establish a seven-year commitment for every handset.

Why your phone may get an update at a different time
A promised support window is not a promise that every device receives each update on the same day. Samsung says availability and timing can vary by product and market; its product-specific information also identifies the device model and network provider as relevant. A regional support page gives examples of security updates arriving monthly, quarterly or twice yearly depending on device and region, but that page is not a complete global schedule. See Samsung’s update guidance.
How to check whether your Galaxy is still supported
- Identify the full model and region. Use the model name and variant, not just a broad family label such as “Galaxy S.” The carrier or network-provider version can matter.
- Check Samsung’s local software-update guidance. Use the Samsung support site for your country and look for the device’s software-update information.
- Check the official security-update scope. Compare your exact model with Samsung’s published device list or model-specific support information. Update frequency can differ by device and region.
- Keep the support clock in mind. Where Samsung specifies a start date such as the S24 series’ global launch, the period is counted from that date, not from your purchase.
The cited Samsung pages do not provide one date-stamped worldwide end-of-support table covering every phone and carrier variant. Without the precise model and market, it is not possible to establish an exact final security-patch date reliably.
