Keep it out of cabinets and away from large obstructions and likely sources of interference, then check the connection in the places you actually use it. A better position can help coverage, but no location guarantees a particular speed or signal strength.
Where should you place your Wi-Fi router?
Start with a practical location that is as central as your home’s layout and broadband wiring allow. Wi-Fi travels outward from the router, so placing it at one edge can leave distant rooms with a weaker connection. The UK communications regulator Ofcom recommends a central, raised position to help distribute coverage and reduce signal lost outside the home or into the ground: Ofcom’s guidance on improving your Wi-Fi experience.

The geometric center is not always the best usable spot. Give priority to the rooms where people work, stream, or make calls, and choose an open location closer to those areas when possible. Broadband entry points and wiring may limit where the router can go.

How to choose and test a location
- Pick a more central, practical spot. If the router is currently at an edge of the home, look for an open location nearer the middle and the rooms that need reliable service.
- Raise it off the floor. A shelf or table can provide an elevated position. Keep the router visible and in open air rather than behind furniture or inside a closed cabinet. TP-Link also recommends avoiding corners and enclosed locations in its router placement guidance; these are vendor recommendations, not a guarantee of a measurable improvement in every home.
- Look for obstacles and interference nearby. Avoid placing the router close to large metal objects or electrical equipment that may interfere with Wi-Fi. Ofcom specifically names microwave ovens, baby monitors, fairy lights, and cordless phones as examples to keep in mind.
- Account for walls and floors. Consider what lies between the router and the rooms you care about. Ofcom notes that “Wifi signals weaken as they pass through objects and some materials block the signal more than others.” It names water, metal, and glass among materials that can affect a signal, with radiators and fish tanks as examples. Dense or structural walls can also make it harder to reach rooms on another side of a wall or on a different floor.
- Check the connection where it is used. After moving the router, try it in the rooms where people work, stream, or make calls. If the home has more than one floor, check each floor; a position that serves one level well may not serve another equally.
There is no universal placement distance, speed increase, or pass/fail signal threshold that applies to every home. Building materials, layout, nearby networks, router design, and the devices connecting to it all affect the result.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
What to do if moving the router does not fix weak coverage
First decide whether the problem is confined to one area or affects several rooms or floors. A coverage add-on may help, but its result depends on the existing signal and where the extra equipment is placed. Ofcom discusses mesh networks as a way to add nodes around a home, and NETGEAR lists extenders and mesh among possible responses to range problems: Ofcom’s Wi-Fi guidance and NETGEAR’s wireless-range troubleshooting advice.
| Option | When it may fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Move the existing router | It is at an edge, on the floor, enclosed, or close to an obstruction. | Often costs nothing, but wiring and the broadband entry point can restrict placement. |
| Wi-Fi range extender | One limited area has weak coverage. | Adds another device; performance depends on the signal it receives and the home layout. |
| Mesh Wi-Fi system | Weak coverage spans multiple rooms or floors. | Adds nodes and cost, and those nodes also need suitable positions. |
Neither an extender nor mesh is guaranteed to outperform the other in a particular home. If the router cannot be moved, a wired access point or a professional installation may be worth considering where the layout and cabling permit.

Router placement mistakes to avoid
- Hiding the router inside a closed cabinet or behind furniture.
- Leaving it on the floor when an open shelf or table is available.
- Putting it in a corner or at the far edge of the home without checking coverage in priority rooms.
- Placing it close to large metal objects, a microwave, or other likely interference sources.
- Assuming one successful test near the router means coverage is good throughout the home.
