Choose a spot that clearly covers the doorway, path, driveway, or yard activity you care about, while giving the camera a strong connection and—if it is a solar model—direct sunlight. For many Arlo wire-free outdoor cameras, Arlo recommends mounting at least 7 feet (2 meters) high and aiming slightly downward. Frame the expected movement in the lower two-thirds of the image, then test the view and motion detection before treating the installation as finished.
Start with the activity you need to see
Pick the area that matters most: a front door, gate, path, parking space, or section of yard. A camera that covers the main approach is generally more useful than one aimed at incidental scenery. Decide where a person or vehicle is likely to enter and move through the scene, then compare candidate mounting points against that route.

Motion geometry matters. Arlo says its cameras detect movement more readily when a subject moves side to side across the view than when it travels directly toward or away from the camera. Aim to capture a useful crossing path where possible, rather than pointing straight down the approach.
Choose the height, angle, and distance for your model
Height and downward angle
Arlo’s general outdoor and Essential Solar guidance recommends mounting at least 7 feet (2 meters) high and aiming slightly downward. The Pro 5S manual instead describes an Arlo Outdoor Mount at 6.5 feet (2 meters) or higher for nearby motion. These are model-specific manufacturer recommendations, not guarantees that every scene will detect equally well. Check the instructions for your exact camera if they differ.

Keep the important movement in the detection area
Arlo identifies the lower two-thirds of the image as the motion-sensitive area in its Essential Solar guidance and Pro 5S manual. Aim so the doorway, path, or other activity you want detected stays in that part of the frame, rather than near the top edge.
Use model-specific range guidance
For the Pro 5S, Arlo describes 5 to 20 feet (1.5 to 6 meters) as the best motion-detection area, with detection possible up to 25 feet (7.6 meters). Those figures apply to the Pro 5S guidance; they should not be treated as a range specification for every Arlo camera or every environment. For other models, consult that camera’s manual and validate the actual scene.

Check the view, connection, and nearby surfaces before drilling
Test the proposed position outside before making holes. Arlo’s Essential Solar mounting instructions say to ensure the camera has a strong Wi-Fi signal at the intended location. Check the live view in the Arlo Secure App, and move the proposed position if the picture omits the important area or the connection is weak.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Clear view: Avoid aiming through glass, which can interfere with the image and motion detection, and avoid mirrors or other reflective surfaces.
- Nearby walls and eaves: Arlo warns that a wall, light, or eave within 2.5 inches (6.4 centimeters) of the camera’s sides or front can cause glare or hazy video. Keep that clearance where possible.
- Field of view: Arlo’s reference groups diagonal fields of view as 180° for Ultra and certain doorbell models; 160° for Pro 3–6 and certain floodlights; 130° for several Essential, Go 2, Pro 2, and Q families; and 110° for some older models. Check the exact camera specification: not every model has an adjustable field of view.
- Installation surface: Choose a mounting point that can securely support the compatible mount and that remains reachable for cleaning or adjustment. Use hardware appropriate to the wall material.
For a solar camera, prioritize sunlight at the camera position
Essential Solar guidance from Arlo recommends direct sunlight and avoiding persistent shade, including deep shade beneath eaves, overhangs, covered patios, or trees. Arlo estimates that the documented camera may need approximately two hours of sunlight per day, depending on its settings, use, activity, and environment. Charging also depends on weather, debris, and panel tilt, so the estimate is not a guarantee of a particular charge level.

If using an Arlo Solar Panel, Arlo says it should be within 4.5 feet (1.3 meters) of the camera, receive direct sunlight, and be compatible with the camera model. Arlo describes the panel as maintaining battery charge, not refilling a low battery from empty. Verify compatibility before selecting a location or accessory.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Install and validate the position
- Map the route: Identify the specific doorway, path, driveway, or yard area to monitor and the direction people or vehicles will travel.
- Try the position: Before drilling, check the live camera view and signal in the Arlo Secure App. Inspect for glass, reflective surfaces, close walls or eaves, and—on a solar camera—shade across the day.
- Follow the exact model’s instructions: Confirm the recommended height, mount, field-of-view options, and compatibility of any solar accessory in that camera’s manual.
- Mount and aim: Use the appropriate hardware for the surface. Aim slightly downward as the model guidance directs, and keep the target movement in the lower two-thirds when that guidance applies.
- Walk the detection area: Move through the route you expect people to take and check whether the app reports motion. Adjust the camera’s aim and motion sensitivity as needed.
- Check after dark: Review the image at night if nearby lights, reflective surfaces, or close eaves might create glare or haze.
For the documented Essential Solar mount, Arlo specifies a 1/16-inch (1.5-millimeter) drill bit for screw holes and a 15/64-inch (6-millimeter) masonry bit for anchor holes. Those sizes apply to that mounting guidance; confirm the instructions and fasteners for your camera and surface before drilling.
