When you use a teleconverter, start by checking that your exact camera, lens and converter are compatible. Then choose a shutter speed for your subject, account for the converter’s light loss, and adjust ISO or shutter speed to expose the image. There is no single best setting: the right balance depends on subject motion, available light, stabilization and how reliably your combination focuses.
Check compatibility before mounting the converter
Teleconverters fit between a lens and camera to increase effective focal length. Compatibility is specific to the equipment: a lens that physically mounts is not necessarily approved for use. Check the converter maker’s compatibility chart and your camera and lens manuals for the exact combination, including autofocus and exposure limitations.

Nikon warns that unlisted NIKKOR lenses must not be attached to its converters because a lens’s rear element could contact and damage the converter. Use Nikon’s AF-S Teleconverter Compatibility chart for those combinations; do not infer compatibility from another lens in the same series. Other manufacturers have their own lists and tools, such as the one linked from Sony’s FE 2x Teleconverter SEL20TC page.

A converter can preserve a lens’s close-focusing distance and save you from carrying a longer lens, but it can also reduce sharpness and may introduce visible defects such as vignetting. Nikon describes light loss and a possible decrease in sharpness as teleconverter trade-offs in its Using Teleconverters guide.

Account for the effective aperture and light loss
A teleconverter magnifies the image and reduces the lens’s effective maximum aperture. Nikon gives these light-loss figures for its converter magnifications:
| Converter magnification | Light lost | Example of the exposure effect |
|---|---|---|
| 1.4x | 1 stop | A lens wide open at f/4 has an effective maximum aperture of about f/5.6. |
| 1.7x | 1.5 stops | The effective maximum aperture is about 1.5 stops smaller than the lens’s stated maximum. |
| 2x | 2 stops | A lens wide open at f/4 has an effective maximum aperture of about f/8. |
The stop-loss figures are Nikon’s guidance in its teleconverter guide; the f/4 examples illustrate the exposure calculation rather than a guarantee about a particular lens. In a Sony example, the company says its 2x FE converter changes f/2.8 to an effective f/5.6, and that higher ISO or a slower shutter may be needed to maintain exposure (Sony FE 2x Teleconverter SEL20TC).
Your camera may display the effective aperture when the body and converter communicate that information, but reporting can differ across systems and older combinations. Check the display on your own camera instead of assuming it will show the same value as another setup.

- With an upgraded USB firmware interface, it supports USB firmware upgrading, and through subsequent upgrades, the adapter can improve its function, and fix bugs.
Choose shutter speed for the subject first
Decide how much motion you can tolerate before balancing exposure. A perched bird, a moving bird and a field-sport athlete call for different shutter speeds; a shutter slow enough for a static subject may record a moving one as blur. A longer effective focal length can also make camera shake more visible.
- For moving subjects: prioritize a shutter speed that freezes the action. If the image is underexposed, raising ISO is usually preferable to slowing the shutter when motion blur would spoil the shot.
- For still subjects: a slower shutter may help preserve a lower ISO, particularly with stable support. Check the result at magnification, since stabilization does not freeze subject movement.
- For either: use a tripod, monopod or other support when it suits the situation, and take a test frame to check for shake and focus error.
There is no universal shutter-speed threshold: the necessary speed depends on subject movement, focal length, technique, stabilization and how much blur is acceptable.
Recover exposure without sacrificing the shot
Once the shutter speed suits the subject, use the camera meter and review the histogram or exposure warning to assess brightness. If the converter’s light loss leaves the image too dark, raise ISO or, if the subject allows it, slow the shutter. These are trade-offs: higher ISO can make noise more visible, while a slower shutter raises the risk of blur.

- Compatible with select Nikon NIKKOR Z long telephoto lenses.
- Increases the native reach of compatible lenses by 40%—without any loss of resolution and with outstanding image quality.
- Retains all AF functionality and speed, VR capabilities and minimum focusing distance, with only 1 stop of light loss.
- Can use every focus point of your Z series camera's sensor all the way down to f/11, unprecedented for teleconverters.
- Maintains the close focusing capability of NIKKOR Z lenses while enlarging the reproduction ratio by 1.4x. Durable and dust and drip resistant.
- Set the aperture: choose within the lens-and-converter combination’s supported range. Remember that the maximum available aperture is effectively smaller after adding the converter.
- Set shutter speed: make it fast enough for the subject’s movement and your ability to hold or support the camera steady.
- Adjust ISO: raise it as needed to reach a usable exposure without compromising the shutter speed the scene requires.
- Review and correct: inspect the histogram and image, then adjust exposure compensation or the relevant manual-exposure setting for the light and subject.
A correct meter reading does not guarantee a sharp photograph: exposure and focus are separate checks. If the subject is correctly exposed but blurred, determine whether the cause is subject motion, camera shake or missed focus before changing settings.

Because the effective maximum aperture is smaller, a converter can affect whether autofocus works and how quickly or accurately it locks. Limits vary by camera, lens and converter; do not apply one manufacturer’s aperture limit to another system. Consult the specific compatibility chart and try autofocus on the subject and in the lighting you expect to shoot.
Nikon’s F-mount chart lists autofocus limitations by equipment combination. For its Z-series bodies and supported Z teleconverters, Nikon says every AF point can be used down to f/11; that is a Nikon Z-system claim, not a general teleconverter rule. Nikon also notes that AF speed and accuracy on Z cameras can vary with the subject and shooting situation (compatibility chart; Z-series teleconverter guidance).

Even a compatible converter may not deliver the same sharpness as the lens alone or a dedicated longer lens. For an informative comparison, photograph the same subject with and without the converter at similar framing, using careful focus and stable support. Compare details at the intended aperture and viewing size; also check for vignetting or other visible defects.

Choose 1.4x or 2x based on the trade-off
A stronger converter gives more reach but also costs more light, and compatibility, autofocus and sharpness can differ by combination. Compare the options you are considering against your actual lens and shooting conditions:
| What to compare | 1.4x converter | 2x converter |
|---|---|---|
| Added reach | Less magnification than 2x | More magnification than 1.4x |
| Light loss in Nikon’s guidance | 1 stop | 2 stops |
| Autofocus | Check the exact camera-lens-converter combination | Check the exact camera-lens-converter combination |
| Sharpness | Test the actual combination at the aperture and distance you plan to use | Test the actual combination at the aperture and distance you plan to use |
These stop figures are from Nikon’s manufacturer guidance; the compatibility and image-quality checks are not interchangeable between systems. A crop or a longer lens may be a better fit if the converter’s light loss, focus behavior or image quality does not suit the shot.
