Choose a star icon only after deciding what it means in the interface: decoration, a read-only rating, a rating the user can set, or an action such as saving a favorite. The shape may look identical in each case, but its accessible name, interaction, and state must tell people what it does.
Start with the star’s job
Do not treat every star as a rating. A star beside a heading may be purely decorative; a row of stars may report an existing score; a selectable row may collect a score; and a single star inside a button may mark an item as a favorite. Decide which one applies before choosing a visual treatment.

- Decoration: adds visual emphasis but communicates no information beyond nearby text.
- Read-only rating: reports a value that the user cannot change here.
- Interactive rating: lets the user choose a value.
- Action: performs an operation such as adding an item to favorites; it is not a rating merely because it uses a star.
W3C guidance explains accessible implementation, not a universally best silhouette, fill, color, animation, or brand style. Treat those visual choices as design decisions and evaluate them with the intended audience.

Decorative star
If the star adds no information beyond a sufficient text label, keep the artwork from being announced redundantly. For an SVG, the W3C Design System shows decorative markup with aria-hidden="true" and focusable="false". See W3C Design System: SVG icons.

Star as a favorite or other action
If a star is the only content in a button or link, give the control an accessible text name that describes its action; the icon shape alone is not a reliable label. Make the action and its state understandable in the surrounding interface as well. The W3C Design System describes accessible text labels for icon-only controls in its SVG icon guidance.
If the icon itself conveys information rather than merely decorating a labeled control, provide an accessible name or text alternative for that information. Avoid giving both the graphic and its control redundant announcements when a single clear control name will do.

Read-only rating
Make the value available as text, rather than requiring someone to count the icons. W3C’s ARIA10 technique illustrates a rating graphic with the text alternative “4 of 5.” The same principle applies to other values: expose the score in a concise text alternative, for example through a nearby text label or an appropriate accessible name. See W3C ARIA10.
Interactive rating
Give the choices a group label and each choice an accessible name that states its value. W3C’s custom-controls tutorial demonstrates radio inputs for ratings from zero through five, with text labels such as “1 Star” and “2 Stars.” The WAI-ARIA APG rating example also uses radio-group semantics and accessible names for the star counts. See W3C Custom Controls and the APG Rating Radio Group Example.

- 6 Sparkling Colors. Green, Blue, Silver, Gold, Purple, Red.
- Perfect for Teachers and Parents.
- Diameter: 0.6" (15 mm)
- Permanent Adhesive. Sticks well on paper, boards, cards and almost any flat surface.
- Pack of 1620 stickers. 270 stickers of each color.
Use keyboard behavior consistent with the chosen radio-group implementation. The APG pattern describes Tab and Shift+Tab for entering and leaving a radio group; check the pattern and rating example for details rather than assuming that a custom row of clickable icons will behave like native inputs. See the APG Radio Group Pattern.
Make focus and selection perceivable
Keyboard users need a visible focus indicator, and users must be able to distinguish the selected rating from unselected choices. Do not communicate focus or selection only through a color change. The APG rating example discusses visible focus and hover feedback, and describes adapting star borders and focus-ring colors with text in high-contrast settings, including use of currentColor and SVG forced-color handling. These are implementation examples, not a substitute for checking the finished interface.

The APG notes that its rating implementation is illustrative and may have browser or assistive-technology support gaps. Test a custom control with the browsers, assistive technologies, keyboard interactions, and contrast settings that matter for your product before using it in production. A custom ARIA example should not be assumed to be production-ready simply because it appears in a standards resource.

- Name the purpose: record whether each star is decoration, a displayed score, an input, or an action.
- Set the accessible information: hide redundant decorative SVGs; give icon-only controls an action name; provide text for displayed ratings; and label rating groups and their choices.
- Check operation: verify keyboard entry and exit, visible focus, and a perceivable selected state for interactive ratings.
- Check rendering: test the artwork and focus treatment with user contrast settings, including high-contrast or forced-color modes where relevant.
- Test the finished component: confirm that names, values, states, and keyboard behavior work in the target browser and assistive-technology combinations.
What visual guidance can—and cannot—settle
Once meaning and accessibility are clear, choose a silhouette and styling that fit the product and remain distinguishable at the sizes where the icon appears. The cited W3C materials do not compare outline and filled stars, animation, brand styles, or conversion outcomes. Those questions require design judgment and testing with the intended audience; do not treat an aesthetic preference as an accessibility rule.
