Google lists Android 17 or later as the phone requirement for its current cross-device services, but that version is a baseline—not confirmation that every feature is available on every Galaxy model. Google’s help pages do not provide a Samsung model-by-model rollout list.
Check the phone’s Android version and settings
- Find the Android version. Open the Samsung phone’s Settings and search for “Android version” or “Software information.” The phone needs Android 17 or later for the cross-device features covered by Google’s current requirements.
- Find cross-device services. In Settings, search for Cross-device services. Google documents the Android path as Google > All services > Cross-device services; Samsung’s menu labels can vary.
- Install available updates. Update the phone and Google Play apps, and install available Googlebook OS and Play Store app updates on the laptop.
Google describes Googlebook compatibility with Android phones running Android 17 or later, but Android version alone does not establish that a specific Galaxy model has access to each feature. Confirm by trying the feature after updating both devices. Google’s cross-device services requirements and its Googlebook product page provide the general baseline.

Meet the requirements on both devices
For cross-device services to connect, Google’s instructions call for the following on the phone and Googlebook:

- Sign in to the same Google Account.
- Turn on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
- Connect both devices to the same Wi-Fi network, or use a personal hotspot.
- Enable Use cross-device services on both devices.
- Use a network that supports multicast DNS. Public or corporate Wi-Fi may block it.
On the phone, enable the service you intend to use as well as cross-device services generally. The corresponding settings are not interchangeable:

Test the feature you want to use
- On the Googlebook, turn on Use cross-device services.
- On the Samsung phone, open Settings > Google > All services > Cross-device services, or search Settings for “Cross-device services.” Turn on the service and its feature-specific option.
- Open or continue the relevant task, file, or app on the phone, then check whether it appears or can be opened on the Googlebook. For hotspot sharing, enable Internet sharing and Instant hotspot on both devices and check the Googlebook’s internet connection options.
For example, a phone on Android 17 that can access files but cannot cast a particular app may meet the general baseline while the app itself is restricted or unsupported. File access and app casting have distinct compatibility limits, so test them separately rather than treating one successful feature as proof that all are available.
If the phone and Googlebook do not connect
- Turn cross-device services off on both devices, wait 10 seconds, and turn it back on.
- Restart one or both devices, check for software and app updates, then try again.
- Retry using a personal network or hotspot. A public or corporate network may block the multicast DNS support Google requires.
- Check that the desired feature’s own toggle is enabled on both devices, not just the general cross-device setting.
Samsung’s support page explains that Google apps may come preloaded on Galaxy phones and tablets or can be downloaded from Google Play if missing. That does not confirm cross-device compatibility for a particular Samsung model. Samsung’s Google apps guidance.

What Samsung model compatibility is confirmed?
Google’s public help material establishes Android 17 or later as the phone baseline for the cross-device functions described here, along with the account, connection, software, and setting requirements. It does not list Samsung models or state which Galaxy devices have completed a rollout. Ars Technica reported Samsung compatibility problems at Googlebook’s launch, but that launch-period report is not a current model-by-model support list. Treat the exact Samsung model and feature as unconfirmed until they work on your updated devices; do not infer universal compatibility from the Android version alone.
