Choose winter hiking boots for the trail and weather you expect—not by a single insulation rating. Match support and stiffness to terrain, waterproofing and gaiters to wet snow, warmth to your cold tolerance and activity, and traction to the surface. Then try boots on with the socks you plan to wear and check that they hold your heel without squeezing your toes.
Start with the hike, not the boot label
Consider the route’s terrain, length and the weight you will carry. Maintained trails and short day hikes may call for less structure than rugged, steep terrain or a longer trek with a heavier pack. As the demands increase, support and protection become more important. Mountaineering boots are designed for snowy peaks and rugged terrain, but that does not mean every winter hike requires them. REI’s hiking-footwear guide explains how terrain, duration and load affect footwear choice.

Choose warmth for your conditions and your body
There is no universal insulation weight or temperature rating established by the guidance cited here. Your needs depend on expected weather, how cold your feet tend to get, how active you will be and how long you will be outside. A thicker sock may add warmth, but only if the boot still fits securely and comfortably; do not use a boot’s insulation label as a substitute for trying it on with your intended socks.
Balance waterproofing with breathability
Waterproof boots can help keep feet dry in wet snow, slush and mud. The National Park Service includes waterproof boots and gaiters among its winter hiking essentials. Gaiters cover the gap above the boot to help keep snow and mud from entering around the top.
#1 Best Overall
- Waterproof material: Men's snow boots feature waterproof construction and windproof synthetic toe caps for anti-collision.
- 200g high-quality insulation materiel: Keeps your feet warm and dry even when the temperature is -25F.
- Removable Insole: The insole can be removed and washed to keep your feet warm, dry and comfortable. The fluffy and comfortable pile fabric quickly absorbs sweat and moisture. Its soft cushions are used to soften the impact of walking and reduce fatigue.
- Isulated: An insulated warm comfy lining provides better protection in bad weather. Perfect for daily life in the winter and outdoor sports like skiing, mountaineering, cycling, etc.
- Durable & Slip Resistant: The rubber outsole is stable, slip & abrasion resistant, and flexible to various outdoor terrain.
Waterproofing has a trade-off: REI notes that hiking boots can be hotter and less breathable than footwear designed to dry quickly. For wet conditions, keeping water out may matter most; in conditions where breathability and drying time are more important, consider that trade-off rather than assuming waterproof construction is always the best choice.
Get the fit right before you commit
Try boots on late in the day, when feet may be larger, and wear the socks you expect to hike in. REI recommends measuring foot length, width and arch length, then checking how the boot feels throughout the foot—not just whether your toes have room while standing on level ground.

- Heel: Check that it stays in place when you walk rather than lifting excessively.
- Forefoot and toes: Look for pinching, and make sure your toes do not hit the end of the boot when you test it on an incline.
- Laces and tongue: Notice pressure points or discomfort as you tighten the boot.
- Hotspots: Pay attention to rubbing that could become painful over a long hike.
More substantial hiking, backpacking and mountaineering boots should be broken in before a backcountry trip. A comfortable try-on is a useful first check, not a reason to skip that preparation. As REI department manager and long-distance trail runner Carlos Rodriguez puts it, “The mark of a good shoe … is that I’m not thinking about it when I’m outside.”

Match traction to the surface
Boot tread alone may not be enough on packed snow or ice. The NPS recommends carrying over-the-shoe traction devices because an icy stretch can appear even on a short hike. Rocky Mountain National Park says these devices help prevent slips and falls on snow and ice, particularly hard-packed snow. In soft, deep snow, snowshoes are the better choice; they help you travel over the surface rather than relying on small traction elements to grip it. Trail conditions can vary with elevation and direct sunlight. See the park’s guidance on hiking with traction devices.

Check boot compatibility before choosing crampons
Technical crampons are not interchangeable with ordinary over-the-shoe traction devices. Compatibility depends on the boot’s stiffness, binding design and intended activity. REI’s crampon guide distinguishes two common binding approaches:
- Strap-on bindings: These can fit a broad range of footwear, but the center bar must flex appropriately with the boot.
- Step-in bindings: These require a rigid sole and toe and heel welts or grooves for the bindings to attach securely.
A crampon on a flexible-soled boot is less secure than one fitted to a rigid-soled boot. For technical mountaineering or ice climbing, do not assume ordinary hiking boots or lightweight traction devices are adequate; choose equipment for the activity and confirm that the boot and binding are compatible.

Use this checklist to compare boots
- Trail and trip: Is the route maintained or rugged? How long is the hike, and how much weight will you carry?
- Snow and moisture: Should you prioritize waterproofing for wet snow and slush, or consider breathability and drying for your conditions?
- Warmth and fit: Does the boot feel warm enough for your expected conditions while fitting comfortably with your hiking socks?
- Surface traction: Will you encounter hard-packed snow or ice, soft deep snow, or terrain that calls for technical crampons?
- Equipment match: Will your traction device, snowshoe binding or crampon work with the boot’s stiffness and construction?
Boots are only one part of winter preparation
Waterproof footwear cannot make an unsafe route safe. Winter conditions can change quickly. Check local trail and weather information and avalanche forecasts where relevant, avoid unsafe ice and be willing to turn around. The NPS also advises bringing warm waterproof clothing and extra dry clothing as part of winter hiking preparation.
